Maletti Group Attacks BRITISH RETREAT 220KM

"Graziani began the invasion of Egypt on 13 September, intending to squeeze the enemy between both offensives. His five divisions with 200 tanks stormed the border, taking Sollum, while the British Western Desert Force, consisting of the 7th Armoured and 4th Indian Division (and Free French Marines, Goums and Senussi rebels), fell back. Just two days later, the Italians had penetrated sixty miles, overrunning Sidi Barrani. After four days on the march, Graziani halted the 10th Army eighty miles west of the British defenses dug in at Mersa Matruh." (Mussolini's War, Frank Joseph, p. 62, Casemate Publishers, 2010)
"Deploying an armored screen to their front, the British withdrew to Mersa Matruh about 220 kilometers east of the Libyan border on the coastal road." (A Military History of Africa, Timothy J. Stapleton, p. 216, ABC-CLIO, 2013)
"The Treaty of 1936 made Egypt responsible for her own defence - in theory at any rate - although her army was to come under British command in case of war. At that time she had some 12,000 men under arms." (Lord Wavell, 1883-1941: A Military Biography, Robert John Collins, p. 197, Hodder & Stoughton, 1948)
"Italian dispatches said today Libyan soldiers performed the seemingly impossible feat of marching 60 miles in a desert sandstorm to surprise a British garrison at Sidi Barrani, Egypt, and capture that strongly defended second line of defence." The Italian high command declared that the resistance of the army massed from all parts of the British empire to defend the western desert had been "crushed everywhere" ... The British hardly expected human beings were capable of the endurance displayed by the LIbyan troops who seized Sidi Barrani ... and expected them to use the customary Arab practice of covering up during a sandstorm such as swept in from the Sahara Tuesday."(news.google.com/newspapers?ni... ITALIANS REPORT SUCCESS IN DESERT, Ludlington Daily News, 18 September 1940)
"In view of his shortage of motor-vehicles, Graziani was able to employ only five divisions and the motorized Maletti detachment, which, however, was also slimmed down. These forces formed the XXIII Army Corps under General Annibale Bergonzili, which comprised the homeland divisions Cirene, Marmarica, and 23 Marzo." (Germany and the Second World War, Volume III, Gerhard Schreiber, Bernd Stegemann, Detlef Vogel, p. 271, Clarendon Press, 1995)
"In taking Sidi Barrani, Graziani had covered 60 of the 315 miles between the Libyan frontier at Sollum and Alexandria." (Divide and Conquer, p. 98, Bookmart Limited, 2005)
"When General Graziani was moving towards Sidi Barrani, Free Frenchmen were among the units that stopped his further advance." (Bulletins from Britain, Issues 19-43, British Library of Information, 1941)

This is from the film, “Lion of the Desert”, about the uprising in Libya against the Italians in the late ‘20s or early ‘30s. It has nothing to do with the British or WWII.

But it is a pretty fair look at what the 10th Army had in '40. The planes and tanks are mostly wrong, but the infantry and artillery are pretty spot on. Maybe the infantry should have more helmets and less US weaponry (like the tripod mounted M1919s). The 10th Army was pretty solid for 1930, but it was hopelessly outdated by 1940.

Yes, but I've already explained that the uploaded clips are from the movie "Il Leone del Deserto". If you study the often reproduced WW2 pictures of the Egyptian invasion of Egypt, you'll quickly discover that Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi wanted those same scenes recreated in the movie he budgeted, showing modern Italian armour and weapons advancing almost in parade formation across the Libyan Desert to take on the Senussi.

Md Nealy the scenes are but in actual fact they where like this in real life, a lot of people say they are cowards but actually they were really brave, especially with them being able to do what they did with what they had, they were also the last ones out of the Russian front and because of that they had to be picked up in India to go home and I know this because my grandmothers uncles where there and one of the even went missing when he was coming home, and the only reason I can see for people calling the Italian soldiers cowards is because that was the only way to bring morale to their on way because what do you do to an enemy you fear, you make fun of them so that you don’t fear them

How impressive! Five (weak) Italian divisions (a big word to describe some ten regiments, with a major component of Lybian troops and black shirts militiamen) advancing by foot, while a total of one British regiment and two companies (British and French), plus some armoured backstopping (just in case) were falling back without mounting a serious fight. In a week, Italians performed a 120-130 km (definitively not 220 km) war trekking exercise, then run out of steam and stopped in order to bolster supply lines; they failed to accomplish this task in the next two months. During this period, some clumsy fortified positions were established, including that one of Group Maletti at Nibeiwa. Then, in the counterattack, 30,000 well equipped and well led British troops disintegrated the 150,000 strong Italian 10th Army. The Maletti Group did not survive to the first day of real combat, loosing 4,157 men and 47 tanks, against 56 (sic) British casualties. Italian tanks were destroyed while still warming the engines. Gen. Maletti just had the opportunity to leave his tent before being wounded and then killed. The movie has nothing to do with the 1940 campaign. It's a Lybian movie of disputable quality about Graziani's brutal repression of Senussi rebellion.

Yes, all your words are true, and the film is a Libyan production that talks about the period of Italy's occupation of Libya. I am from Libya and I know the details of the Libyan war of liberation against Italy and the details of the confrontations between Great Britain against Germany and Italy on the Egyptian and Libyan lands during the Second World War and how the Senussi allied with Britain for the freedom and independence of Libya. Thank you for stating the truth.

Leadership, yes, tech/weapons/equipment, yes, soldiers, no. When all your equipment is 10 years out of date and not enough of it, flesh can only do so much. Also, considering, again, technical disadvantages the navy did a pretty good job, got a lot of supplies through for the Germans despite being at a disadvantage. I have no doubt that IF the Italians had the same tech level and leadership as the germans in the numbers needed they probably would have kicked the british out of Africa and possibly the middle east. After all I think, at least at the beginning they outnumbered the british 3-1.They also would have slowed the allies down a lot more in 1942-43.

Not British troops but Senussi rebels. The WW2 Graziani Offensive's advance quickly became the Graziani retreat.

I noticed that right off, however, actually, he is making a small left hand turn. Left track is stopped for the tank to pivot left. The right track is still moving the tank forward in a left swing. Definitely looks weird though.
