There are a lot of good sounding ones: Orbital ‎- "Wonky" / Tosca ‎- "Dehli9" / Four Tet ‎- "New Energy" / Photek ‎- "DJ-Kicks" / Sven Van Hees ‎- "Svensei" / Amon Tobin ‎- "Fear In A Handful Of Dust" / Bjørn Torske ‎- "Byen " / Phil France ‎- "Circle"

As much as I like Orbital, their releases since 2004’s blue album sound horrible to me. They’ve been using the same mastering engineer. I cannot listen to them without drastically bringing down the upper frequencies. I love the track “Stringy Acid” on Wonky but it hurts my ears.

Great stuff Michael and a rarely hit on topic. Some of these were new to me and I took some notes while watching it on repeat. Alva Noto is totally new to me as is Still und Dunkel. After seeing the Still und Dunkel cover again, I had to go off and sample that one. I like it! I am going to be picking that one up for sure. Trentemøller is one of my favorites and I have been following him since almost the start of his career. In the United States, this kind of music is really underground and much of it needs to be imported from Europe. I was lucky enough to get exposed to it living in Russia and then later in Muenchen. I miss that we don't have shops that cater to electronic music. In Muenchen, there were a couple of really good shops that I would frequent on the weekends.

I'm a little lagging behind with Jarre, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and Glitch Mob. Thank you for these recommendations, will seek them out! Electronica genre is way underappreciated by audiophiles: they can create so deep an atmosphere, that we can literally feel the air changing and reality shifting. (No worries, I only drink tea, but no other "substance" - it's the music playing the magic.) They present us truly transformative experiences. However, an excellent system is a must, most audiofile systems have too strong voicing for specific genres and labels to be able to play these wonderful music. Aloha from Hawaii!

What a great list there Mikael. Krüder/Dorfmeister DJ Kicks is a great collection of fine tuned electronic mixes and music. Tosco u just must have..!! Great that Trentemøller found he's way into your list. Trentemøller's albums sounds really really good on a good system, and he is all over the place, in terms of sounds and genres. Kasper Björk is also an artist to regionalize. But should i pick only one titel over them all, it must be Lulu Rouge/Bless U album, which also is a Danish collaboration. If u wanna know how deep your low ends are...then this album from Lulu Rouge or Kasper Björk is the one! Cheers from Denmark

I don’t know ANYONE else who’s ever even heard the UNI triptych, let alone treasured it as much as I do. I have VRS and EQAV on vinyl and they’re wonderful. Thanks for introducing me to XEROX and some of the others in this episode. One I would like to share with you is French artist AES DANA and his Ultimae label. Some of the smartest, most consistent glitch downtempo IDM I’ve ever heard. It was a friend at Ultimae who introduced me to Alva Noto. Try POLLEN or INKS. Cheers.

I'll definitely be picking up the Trentmoller one, and possibly the Autechre too, although I just bought their "5" album and I'm finding it a little impenetrable on first listen. I'm a relatively new convert to the clicky-clicky style, so I may try to find the Alva. Noto Uniqav album. Many thanks for introducing me to all this new electronic music. I have a great 3 Lp compilation set in my collection which i can greatly recommend if you want to get into electronic music. It is called Hungry 5 - the best of 5 years. It includes one lp each of worakls, n’to and joachim pastor and i think this is great for someone just getting into electronic music. Its also a bit more melodic than for instance some of the albums (that are of course also great albums!) that Michael mentioned in the video, which maybe makes for a kind of smoother way into this kind of music.

Until very recently I was restricting my new vinyl purchases to titles that were obviously analogue in origin (e.g. jazz, classical, etc.). All new electronic purchases were on CD. The logic was that it didn't make sense to spend the extra money on electronic vinyl when the music was obviously digital in origin. I'm beginning to rethink that since watching your video on the Kraftwerk albums. I was pleasantly surprise by the sound quality when I bought them. Now I'm buying more electronic music on vinyl. I'm still very selective as this stuff is expensive but I'm liking the rediscovery of titles I've had for years on CD.

This is an inspired move, as indeed, most people are confused betwwen the concepts of electronic and digital. Electronic doesn't mean digital, but even when it does, it's more complicated than that, as the mixing and mastering in electronic music can be a big part of the artistic creation. An analogue tape pre-mix of a digital recording can be a well thought and informed creative choice.

extra comment for recommendations now.. - Apparat - Duplex (Shitkatapult 2003) ..sounds like autechre but way more accessible with its wonderful emotional melodies and here and there some vocals.. also would recommend the follow up albums. although he gets a bit more commercial with every album, "walls" and "the devils walk" are amazing too - Skee Mask - Compro (Ilian Tape 2018) ..if you like burial, please check this out! one of my all time favourites! - Global Communication - 76:14 (Dedicated 1994) ..a chillout CLASSIC masterpiece.. - Christian Löffler - Parallels (Deutsche Grammophon 2021).. electronic reworks of historical classical recordings.. but definitely more an electronic album than classical.. and its an amazing pressing.. double 45rpm! ..also check out his first two albums "A Forest" and "Mare" on his own label Ki records.. BEAUTIFUL emotional deep techno'ish music.. - Rauelsson - Mirall (Sonic Pieces 2018).. the predecessor "Vora" os more neo classical, where as this is way more electronic stuff.. and so on and so forth... lalala.. blahblahblah 🤪

Great video, with a tip or two, even for me as an electronica fan. I understand why such a list is finite and not everyone can make it on it, but would still like to know why the Berlin Moderat did not manage to be mentioned. Especially the completely analog recorded debut album is, in my opinion, at least top 10 in terms of sound. Thanks!

I feel that Xerox 3 is his best one, with Aleph. 4 has one outstanding track, worth the price of admission alone (even if my copy desn't sound good at all). I do find vol 1 and 2 a bit dull, though, lacking tension. Carsten Nicolai founded Noton, so in a way he co founded Raster-Noton ^^. I will soon do my Autechre video, even if it is difficult for me, as it is the one band I have everything on vinyl they ever did. Gabor Lazar, along with Rian Treanor, he is about the future of music, like Autechre was 20 years ago, the most relevant music around in 2021 if you like the idea that the future is a romantic Sci-Fi idea. Of course I highly object to Trentmoeller, Kruder and Burial LP, but hten again, you did ask, hahaha. Seriously, i find the Kruder seriously outdated and irrelevant. Trentmoeller, I just find it cheesy. Burial, some early EPs of his are nice, but this album sounds super cheap IMHO, even lazy in a way. I get what he's trying to do, but it feels like a blueprint, not something fully accomplished. I know I am in the minority there though, but the RnB vocals sampling ets a little tired, and's been done better elsewhere. Nicholas Jaar, I wish I liked him, but I find it lacking a je ne sais quoi as they say over the pond. I think it's just too nice, not powerfull or ambitious. It's too nice and predictable. Only opinions of course, and not the best way to discuss, but that could be a start. One fantastic sounding record that you might find interesting, highly underlooked nowadays, is Phoenecia's Brownout. But of course, there are hundreds others, and we could fill several volumes of heavy books ^^ Glad to see you speak about all that, though, really so.

@@Michael45RPM I have now listened to Unieqav, Burial and Forest Swords. Unieqav - I agree it is a great sounding audiophile, brilliantly produced production, you can tell Alva Noto comes from the fine arts rather than from a connection with underground electronica. I listened to disc 1 late at night with the volume [too] low but this needs a good volume to work at its best. Burial - great album, great sound, great production and you can definitely hear the link to to underground music scene and I preferred it to Unieqav. But Forest Swords - wow what a brilliant record. That record took me places Uniqav just isn't capable of doing. Unieqav felt like a walk around a contemporary art gallery ie you are sat thinking that's a nice sound etc but leaves you wondering sometimes. But Forest Swords was able to take me on a journey - just a shame the journey was disturbed when it was time to turn the record over. I'll be looking for his other work now. I also purchased Alva Moto with Ryuichi Sakamoto - Two Live in Sydney - but not listened to it yet. Thanks for the recommendations Michael - they are brilliant. Have you heard/listened to UNKLE?

So this being electronic music, would these sound cleaner as digital files? Do the inherent audio artifacts of vinyl, outside of the quality of the audio system being used, enhance or detract from this genre of music especially for more recent releases (post Kraftwerk)? Curious what others think? By the way, listening to Unieqav (on Tidal) for the first time and it is killer.

Digital and electronic are two completely separate realms : electronic music is analog, unless it is done with digital tools. The basis of electronic music is either an oscillator, or a magnetic tape. The misconception is unfortunately common. Now, if the music is produced digitally, it doesn’t mean the end result will be digital, since analog mixing and processing techniques are often used before the mastering stage, and creatively so.

@@StuntrockConfusion Thank you as I hadn't really thought of it this way.
