Narset is still an incredibly strong Commander. The primary reason she's losing popularity is because she's unfun to both play with and against, especially if built in an extra turns deck. Because of this, the community has essentially soft banned her in the more casual environment that Commander tries to shepherd.

I have a Narset deck, and while I do have a few extra turn spells in it, it's all the expensive ones like Nexus of Fate, Beacon of Tomorrows and Expropriate. It's mostly Planeswalkers. Just 20-ish Planeswalkers and proliferate effects. I'm glad to let people have their turns... I'm just gonna make sure my Planeswalkers get their abilities at instant speed first, and maybe make it so their abilities get multiplied....

fun fact: hexproof for a while was also given the name "troll shroud" during the time the keyword shroud (which made the thing untargetable by everyone) existed but not hexproof. The reason why it's called troll shroud is due to Troll Ascetic all the way back in classic mirroden. It was also given this name since historically in magic, most trolls had regenerate & were quite difficult to kill.

It should be mentioned that you can bypass Lotus Field's sacrifice requirement by countering it by playing a card like Strict Proctor.

with lotus field, its important to mention that its still very powerful in modern with decks running primeval titan and amulet of vigor

I've been using the Bogle as a Mutate target. Best 1 drop I could think of.

You can do things in reaction to Nine Lives gaining counters Like... Giving it to someone at instant speed with Zedruu "You attack me? Ok, first of I don't take damage, but I activate Zedruu's ability to give the Lives to you so *you* lose when it gets exiled" Another fun thing is giving it to someome and returning all non-land permanents to hand Guy who got it lose and you have a 2nd ammo for whoever piss you off around the table :)

A shout out to Troll Ascetic, Thrun's precursor.. It saw healthy standard play before Affinity and Skullclamp ruined everything.

Amazing!

Dungrove Elder is another very strong creature with hexproof that gets bigger the longer the game goes.

Thrun has been putting in work for years as my voltron commander.

Blue should have never received hexproof. It should have stayed green while blue was stuck with shroud.

The fact that hexproof isn't the best ability is more about how powerful some things are than hexproof being weak.

Targetting protection (or effect immunity) in YGO often includes both players, which may be an interesting design choice and add flavour to cards but is sometimes bothersome as you need to keep track of what you yourself can do with your own monster. Hexproofness is relievingly simple.

I think it would be interesting if they did more cards with shroud and less with hexproof. I think shroud is a more interesting ability in concept.

Unrelated, but It's funny to me that because Hexproof wasn't a keyword at the time of its printing, vines of vastwood has one of the more unique can't be targeted effects. Vines of vastwood makes it so that its target can't be targeted by your opponents instead of the opponents of the target's controller.

Paradise druid is pretty good too

No mention of Nine Lives donation? When it winds up having a worrying amount of counters, you use a card like Donate to give it to an opponent, hit them to add a few counters, and win. It's not the Strongest "Lose the game" donate combo, but it is an option.

I run Nine Lives in my Zedruu the Greathearted commander deck and it has led to great shenanigans with her repeatable donate ability. Donate it and play cyclonic rift and you instantly kill a player and get it back to play again (and give to someone else).

I don't think I would relegate Lotus Field to Rogue status after two players piloted it to Top 8 Pro Tour Phyrexia and is sitting at 6% of the total Pioneer on MTGTop8 and is still consider Tier-1 (ranking 6th) on mtgdeck.

I'd put it pretty easily at number 1, top 3 minimum. Unfortunately, it was never played in a ~2014-era modern deck, so the scriptwriter overlooked it.

When MTGA was first released, Carnage Tyrant was such a huge problem for my mill deck that I had to run nightveil predator just to ensure I didn't instantly lose. Ironically, since nightveil predator also has flying and hexproof, it itself turned out to be an instant win against other decks.

Uril, the mistwalker. One of the original big stompy voltron commanders. Heatproof. Gets +2/+2 for each aura attached to him.

Carnage Tyrant, the cooler Colossal Dreadmaw. Slippery Bogle was the first creature that shows just how fundamentally problematic hexproof can be. When you slap it one a VERY cheap creature, it becomes essentially untouchable. In fact, hexproof was so problematic, ward was made to balance it. And hexproof was made to replace shroud for being such a confusing mechanic. EDIT: Looking at the replies, I realize that shroud isn't clunky, just confusing and unintuitive.

Shroud was not clunky. Shroud was simple. Absolutely no one can target Shroud. Hexproof is the chunkier Shroud with an exception for yourself

Ward isn't balance for hexproof. Shroud is. Ward is completely useless.

Shroud is protection from targeting, Hexproof is protection from targeting from players other than you, and ward is protection unless the conditions to target is met. Hexproof and shroud make interaction harder and are as a result often on really bad cards or REALLY good cards. Ward is also just a way to trade resources for one another if you have to 2 for 1 yourself to kill my creature that might just straight up be better than Hexproof or shroud. Though with things like bone crusher giant I honestly just think WotC has no idea how it wants to handle this sort of mechanic. Though they’ve mostly made it clear shroud won’t come back often in its entirety.

@@NotSoSerious69420 I know shroud is older than hexproof. Hexproof was always riskier than shroud because shroud's only weakness was sacrifice. Hexproof is useful enough - except that there were far too many cards that took it away. Ward's 'conditions' are so easy to meet that the 'protection' is laughable. Magic simply just gave the game to red/black players who think they have the right to destroy everything played (they don't). Wizards cares only about red/black players, occasionally white if white is aggressive that year. Those who wish to protect their creatures and permanents are really not welcome anymore.

True Name dosen't have Hexproof. I still feel he should have been number 1 though.

I hated playing against Narset. This one guy built a control/extra turns Narset and it was the most annoying thing ever. What I hated was the fact he attacked only me 9 times in a row and didn't kill me while he countered literally everything I played because the other 2 players were just sitting there wasting oxygen. Nothing is more infuriating than not playing a game and not losing it quickly. Honestly when you stop playing Magic and it becomes Solitare you need to play a different game.

@@NotSoSerious69420 I did. The problem was I sat there for 40 minutes waiting hoping for another game because there was no other people playing and it was one of the few days I had off. That players win-con was to make the game unbearable and not actually win through any other means. I don't play in that store anymore.

Narset looks horrible

I love the videos, but I feel like the "mispronouncing MtG cards" gag is getting to be a bit much. I noticed like 3 in this video and, personally, it's more distracting than funny.

Narset is still a kill on sight commander. Or rather an edict or wipe on sight, lol. She's just so unfun to play with and against in the casual side and not such a great option in cEDH anymore so.... Also, it may not be the worst idea to read the scripts to someone who actually plays MTG before you record it.

Along with Boggle and Scout goes Silhana Ledgewalker, even though it is 2 mana, it has upside in the form of evasion. I used to play 1 copy in boggles deck.
