Tool Trailer Custom Build Out Part 3

In this video I wrap up the main "build out" of the tool trailer. If you are curious about ways to customize your tool storage for better organization i hope this series helps you out. There is still much to customize and add-ons to install which may be a final video with full walk thru. If interested in the packout rack my buddy Andy made me please look him up on instagram. It's always awesome to help out a small business. IG: andyglassimpressions

It only has to work for you, Kyle. I'm left handed and I can see a few things I would change to suit, but not many and not much. A plumber's tools are a bit different, but using space wisely is the name of the game- you win! Kudos fro better carpentry then this plumber did too! I also cheated and used some big slide out drawers on the floor as bonus spaces. It made a big E350 van a little "crouchy" to get into and out of, but it gave me the space to keep the middle floor clear for materials, so I seldom needed a trailer. If I had to do it again, I might like your stand up and make it happen pattern better! The next time you insure the trailer make sure you list a value for the interior- I got hit in the rear and it trashed my floor drawers and because they weren't listed "options" I was unable to get full insurance value. 1/2” plywood for the lower section and 3/4” plywood for the upper section? Must have stops for every opening. While driving things move and get damaged. I am fussy so in mine I add a few more details and creature comforts. Need a clean area for making tea and coffee. Definitely storage for a change of clothes when it rains or you get dirty. Add a plastic bin for muddy boots. Add a couple folding stools for changing boots. Somewhere a wash up station to clean up a bit before driving home.

I think you will be surprised when you pull that trailer for a day or two. How do you keep the drawers from sliding out. I had a trailer with slanted shelves for Little Debbie and Sunbelt treats that took years to get dialed in to keep boxes on the shelves. Good luck, I hope it works. Maybe have Greg put you in the trailer and drive slow so you can see how much the trailer rocks and sways.

If you have trouble with stuff sliding out in transport might I suggest using “tarp ball bungees” - little bungee cord loops with hard plastic balls on the end. They can be used in a number of ways to secure stuff and since the are elastic they are easy to stretch out of the way, or the ball fitting into a slot or pocket of some kind makes them easy to pop out and get completely out of the way.

I bought all ridgid boxes when they first came out and the crates that lock on. And I used to keep all my caulk in one but hated when it wasn't full bc they would fall all over so I cut a piece of 3/4 ply to fit inside and then laid out hole's with just enough meat left so it was still durable and drilled out with a hole saw..went a little overboard but also hit them with a round over bit. Then put a couple raiser blocks under it so it sits like midway in tbe crate. I love it..I forget how many it holds but it's really more then I need to have on hand. But I never get in a pinch bc I don't have something and when I know it's dropping below freezing I just grab the crate and bring it inside.

Plus, when Kyle shows them off at 6:10, they just sit there (leveled), as opposed to rolling back in - which would actually be a nuisance really. I'm guessing there will be some kind of stopper pin of sorts...that's what I would install.

Why doesn't Milwaukee (or DeWalt, or others) just incorporate a design-feature in their storage to add slides? Why waste all the baltic birch for a cnc'd shelf that instead, have a clip or bump-out feature/hook that allows drop in to a slide, and use as drawer, and/or be removable? Plus, look at the weight gain in the trailer? Sorry... late night and thinking...
