🎵 TOOL Parabola Reaction | Avatars, Hyperspace, and Burning Monks

Ойын-сауық

Thanks for checking out our TOOL reaction. Parabola is a song that really get you to thinking about what the human experience is all about. What are we doing here on this floating rock? Why are we in these body suits? Are we the body suit or are we just inhabiting it? This song will send you down the rabbit hole.

@@tristantknight I'm not sure if the correct word is "illusion." We are definitely perceiving our reality, such as it is. However, I believe that what we consider to be sacred and most important (our life as a living creature on earth, etc.) is exaggerated when viewed in the greater perspective of our true existence as a shared consciousness. This is just as brief station on our grand journey, and is practically meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I also believe that we dip into and out of this earthly existence many times, over and over again. Some have referred to this as Reincarnation, though it may be a continual process that our shared consciousness engages in over eons.

Hell yeahhh!!! do a lateralus lyric video next ;) "This whole album deals with spiritual enlightenment(with the climax at the end of Reflection). Parabola specifically deals with the illusory nature of the self. "We barely remember who or what came before" -> Our memories are very limited, but they create a story of our "selves" despite that. It's just an illusion, the song tells us to focus on the now(a common theme in spirituality) and that our bodies are just a temporary form of being. The other songs on Lateralus all focus on different aspects of the main spiritual truth that Reflection tries to convey. The Grudge/Schism are about our relationships with other beings and how futile it is to separate ourselves from them. We are, after all, all one mind. The Patient/Ticks and Leeches are about dealing with the struggles that come along the path to spritual enlightenment. The incredible amount of patience it requires, the negative influences from the outside world, etc. Lateralus is about the exploration of ourselves and just the general size and scope of what there is to discover. Many people call Tool hard to understand, but they actually convey very simple messages in their music. That's part of what makes them so great, their universal applicability to almost all situations.

I’ve always looked at this song as a reminder that this life and everything that comes with it is temporary. Yes, pain is an illusion, but it’s still “real” at the moment. But it’s a reminder during the event that this is temporary. So hold on, get through it, so you can come out the other side. This is probably my favorite from Tool.

Yep. Pain is an indicator of damage to the body. Since the body is NOT who we are, it's not as dire as we are programmed to interpret it. Psychological pain, while more "real" than physical pain, is still an illusion, distracting us from the fleeting but holy experience of being alive. And breathing.

  • @kdog909

This song raises more questions than it answers. Why are we here in these bodies? Why should we “hold on” to this reality? What if I don’t like being here? If we are eternal, shouldn’t I just commit suicide and hope that the next phase of existence is better? Etc. Still my favorite Tool song.

I just wanted to point out that what Brad is describing when he "went through a portal" during his transition from waking state to dreaming state is an actual phenomenon established by sleep science! It is known as the hypnagogic state and it is the moment when awareness of the physical body and environment starts to give way to the imagery and sensations being generated in the brain when you are dreaming. Experienced lucid dreamers actually use this as part of a technique in which they hold onto their consciousness as the body falls asleep so that they can directly transition straight into a lucid dreaming state. Very cool to hear you inadvertently experienced this for yourself! Great reaction video by the way, I love to see the deep philosophical conversations that Tool's music encourages!!

"This body Makes me feel Eternal All this pain is an illusion." There's a spiritual concept in the Adviata school Vedanta Hinduism called the Māyā. Lots of interpretations of what the Māyā is and what it represents, but almost all refer to it as the magic power with which a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion and all the pain and suffering of our mortal lives is nothing more than this illusion. This song is so heavy on spirituality and the concepts of reincarnation that I can't help but think about that when I hear it. Awesome reaction. Thanks for sharing it.

We chose to live in the first place. My grandpas last words. So eerie. I’ve always felt like this life is real, but fake in the sense of where and what we are before before we chose to come here. We create our pain because we need it, but not in a sadistic or masochistic way, but in a metaphysical desire to feel what’s originally foreign.

Love to have seen Lex jump and go into hyperspace at the drop. Great interpretation of the song, like people say it is what you take from it. Im the person with cancer that brought this up, what it means to me is "this body holding me is holding my soul" Cancer is very painful so when it says we live eternal (our soul) pain is a illusion. How i look at this song. Great reaction

Yeah, pain is physical, of the flesh. It is of the finite. We get lost living life in this physical, finite, limited understanding, forgetting that this is just temporary. Just a blip on the radar of the INFINITE. The TRUE reality. The realm of the spirit, the divine. The much bigger picture.

Great reaction and analysis! 'Pain is an illusion' is a difficult philosophical concept to wrap one's head around. Pain is a concept/label describing a subjective experience. The sensation itself is not 'pain'. Pain is just a word/label we use to describe an experience. The perception and labeling of the raw sensation as pain creates 'pain'. One of the consequences of meditation can be the realization of the nature of pain as being a subjective interpretation of the actual phenomena, or as some people describe it, an illusion of the mind.

Honestly, I’ve never heard that take about disease. I don’t see it that way, but these songs are meant to be taken in the context of the listener. For me, it’s about the choice of being me in my moment and understanding that my current form is temporary and will change in the next moment.

Lex is pretty much spot on with her analysis. I'm disabled and live with chronic pain. I've had 4 back surgeries at 21 and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at 12. Pain is my existence and my existence is pain. I can't work. I'm only 36 years old. This Parabol/Parabola is my absolute FAVORITE Tool song, and I've been a part of the Tool Army since they entered the scene basically, but these two songs have meant so much to me. I'm not religious at all, but to me, we don't remember what it's like before we're born therefore, with that logic, we won't remember/know anything after we die, but we, meaning our essence, our being, is eternal. We will always be. Knowing that this life with all this physical and mental and emotional pain is temporary in the grand scheme of things. It will NOT last forever. It brings me comfort knowing that. We are all connected through the universe with our beings. Our essence. There are theories of a universal consciousness that we might all share among everything in the universe. Nothing is destroyed, just transferred in other things, therefore, again, we are all eternal and this temporary form, this body holding me and the pain involved, is an illusion. A tiny blip of my eternal being. I've said it for years, and I'll keep saying it. If these songs are not played at my funeral, I'm not going. These songs are everything to me, and will forever be everything to me.
