Picked up this disc in Kalamazoo called Opiate by this band Tool that my brother brought to me and said it was awesome. I would have found them eventually, but I thank him for the tip. This band has honestly changed my life. Not so much in the early years...especially when no one knew the lyrics.....but everything after undertow has a healing and personal growth aspect that stuck with me.

Hmm. I would agree that Tool songs are best enjoyed within the context of the album. And I would agree that there is a definite trajectory to their growth and evolution as a band that is readily apparent when listening to the albums in order. But I would need to see evidence before supporting the idea that the albums are _intended_ to be listened to in release order. Or even that there is an intended album order at all.

My friend says to me "Yo you remember that band i showed you, TOOL? well listen to these two." And i did. I laid flat on my back on a deck looking up at the stars as these two played. Parabol completely fucked my brain over. Made me feel like i was genuinely traveling through space. There are still metaphors from it that will stay in my head forever. To answer the question who else writes music like tool. No one else to my knowledge. It's "philosophy" metal. What makes Tool so unique is that despite it's super deep and complex meanings at times they are such phenomenal musicians that the average Joe can drink a beer while playing beer pong and never have a clue what Maynard is talking about but love it anyways. The Laterals Album is the most meditative sounding album. 10,000 days also good. What is so amazing about tool is how each album changes in sound and changes in perspective of lyrics. It's almost like tools discography is a lyrical diary of Maynard James Keenan. Even though his mom is main staple in many of his songs each album progresses and reflects his growth through life. Undertow: most raw and brutal - full of self loathing and anger, AEnema: wanting to grow and become something different still very aggressive and trashing self-centered society in the song of AEnema. Lateralus: finding piece within and accepting life and it's lesson it teaches you - if you are open to listening. This a very relatable experience as a self-reflective individual.

Ya got it a little wrong. Adam, Justin and Danny just write music, and give it to Maynard. Maynard then listens to the music, gets a vibe from it, then writes and records the vocals. Any theme comes pretty much just from Maynard.

Pink Floyd, King Crimpson, Genesis, God speed you! Black emperor are some of bands that made spiritual esoteric music like this. Tool are great, but it's not something that we have never heard before.
