*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

I had a semi-religious experience related to this song.. I was a Programmer/Designer at Rockstar San Diego, and we all went up to E3 in Los Angeles right around the release of Midnight Club: Dub Edition. I think it was 2006 or 2007. We were all staying at either the Chateau Marmont or the Standard. Videogame money was taking care of us, treating us like actual rock stars. We all headed down Sunset to some swanky place, had Sushi for dinner and drank enough alcohol to sink a ship. Most stumbled back to the hotel, but a few of us decided a strip club visit was in order. I didn't find the talent all that special, but there was one... oh my... She was perfection. I really didn't care what she was going to dance to, but when she took the stage to this song, I think I pulled a Dave, and floated away. From that moment on, my color was green, and that dancer on stage... well, she was mine too. A few lap dances later and my life was forever changed. God damn i love this song.

Danny says when they were in full writing mode for the album a friend showed up and recounted his trip to the Integraton and described his alien abduction, and something about a briefcase. Maynard just started writing in a freeform, stream of thought style and the band spent a lot of time coming up with the music. Adam said it was the song that created the most disagreement in thoughts as to the construction and tone. It all obviously worked out. A technical masterpiece IMO.✌🤘🤘

Yes playing it on guitar is a hand cramp challenge, the key is to do the hammer ons using as little effort as possible, lighter strings help. Okay.. a little piece of information about Tool that may help you get why a satirical song about drugs have this shitload of instrumentals and heavy riffs among other pretty deep songs with simpler (arguable) arrangements. The lyrics is the last piece to be added into their music. Maynard creates the lyrics by his reaction on the instrumentals sent (done and unchangeable) to him. Imagine you getting this instrumental madness and think of what the hell you would talk on top of it. I think he chose the perfect fit. I confess it took me a while to really appreciate this song, but man... when you get into it, there is just no way back. "Overwhelmed as one would be...." this gives me chills every time and I consider it one of the best pieces of their music for a while already...

If you can, check out the 1993 film Fire in the Sky. Based on the alien abduction account of Travis Walton. However, these 2 songs are about a guy who got abducted and given a message to tell the world. But because the human mind can only comprehend so much, he became overwhelmed by the experience and totally forgot what the message was. Gets dumped somewhere completely naked in a mindless state, then wanders into a doctor's clinic and strapped down to the bed; the lyrics are what he thinks happened. The music on its own in both tracks, I believe are hauntingly calm (lost keys) and the ups and downs of his emotional state (rosetta stoned). That's my interpretation anyway.

So many times that I have been high (pot, and 70's LSD), I have wished I had a pencil because I think I have had some some elusive insight - an epiphany . I never remember it. I don't think I could write it down anyway. My attention span is usually around 20 seconds. Dreamlike.

BTW. The groove that I mentioned yesterday (that starts at 22:39) can be broken into five chunks that is repeated over and over. Listen to that groove until you can tap along without any problems. Once you've done that, you will notice that SAME groove used several times during the last half of the song as more of a underlying layered element. It adds so much to this song. This song is truly a freaking masterpiece.

Would like to know where in the song your hearing a talk box? The only song I know he used it in is Jambi. I know Adam has talked about creating the tone and sound at the beginning of Lost Keys, and one or two other points in Rosetta Stoned, were achieved by the "Pipe Bomb Microphone", he built himself. It was constructed by placing a guitar pickup in a copper pipe that was capped on both ends. Have seen some others have made that are similar, but none that used a guitar pickup. And I haven't been able to find out anything on how it is used.

Appreciation of psychedelics does not equal drug problem. Maynard has not had a drug addiction to my knowledge, but I'm sure he's dabbled in his share. Also, this song was based on a story told to Maynard.

Regarding the effect on Maynards voice. I saw them perform this live in 2006 and he used a megaphone for this song. Impressively he did all that super fast talking in the first half live perfectly too.

Hi, a few things on this one: -On the album there is no gap between the end of Lost Keys and the beginning of Rosetta Stoned. Immediately after the doctor says "Tell me everything", you get the guitar and MJK saying "Alrighty then. Picture this if you will:" -There is a video on YT of Danny Carey talking about the inspiration for this song. It was an actual person they knew who thought he'd been abducted, and MJK took it from there. -From everything I've ever seen, read, or heard about their songwriting process, the music is done when they give it to MJK, who then uses the track to write the lyrics.

Knowing about, and using in moderation, does not mean a problem. Idk if he did drugs, but I'm more knowledgeable about drugs than just the ones I've done. Most of this song is old school drug lingo, too. Deadhead chemistry/blotter are terms that most kids in the "scene"would understand as LSD. X is ecstasy, DMT is another hallucinogenic drug. Basically, dude blasted himself into orbit long before a craft supposedly picked him up.

Many people miss this, but Lipan Conjuring is also a part of this storyline. Act I: Lipman Conjuring - Our subject is participating in a Lipan Apache ritual, perhaps on a reservation out in the desert (Lipans were known for their use of Peyote and Ayahuasca.. both plants containing DMT) Act II: Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) - Our subject finds himself waking up disoriented in a hospital overhearing a nurse and doctor discussing his situation and the lack of information they have. Act III: Rosetta Stoned - Our subject reveals the tale of an alien abduction that happened between the time frame of Act I and Act II. Danny goes on to explain the inspiration behind the storyline here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lqB-rrCxlZatkZs.html

Non-creative people can't even imagine how creative people could possible come up with bizzare random stories without having a 'drug problem'. I don't use anything and write sci-fi and fantasy novels. While this particular story song was inspired by drugs, Maynard was almost certainly not on drugs when he wrote it into lyrics.
