You need to react to “Prison sex” by Tool it’s a rough song to get through if you’re reading the lyrics. Not sure if the events happened to him in the song but definitely check it out.

I once had a girlfriend who hated Tool because she "prefers songs that are about something." What a lost soul she turned out to be.

When you grow up damaged by your relationships, you worry about passing the damage along to others like an infection. At the same time, you worry about getting close to those who can damage you more. How much damage can this person cause me? How much more can I take before I'm completely broken and useless to myself and others. You become very conservative with your feelings.

Tool is amazing! So happy you discovered them and H is one of my favorites from them.

I have considered myself a huge TOOL fan for the entire time they have been blessing us with their gift and I have NEVER heard a more concise breakdown of the meaning of this song. Thank you so much.❤

Thank you India. Love YOU and TOOL. This is one of my favorite songs I actually listen to on repeat all the time. So emotional. And could have multiple meaning. I'm an ex H addict so I relate to it in different ways than how MAYNARD'S intended it. I found out later in life his meaning for writing it and was just like HOLY SHIT it's amazing how good lyrics can touch ppl for different reasons. He's a genius in my eyes and his voice makes me want to cry, punch something or someone at times, conquer my demons and the world and help others overcome their struggles all in a 6 min some. It's awesome and crazy as shit. Thx.

If you want another song like this....Jimmy is an emotional roller coaster and just a Banger of a song. Basically about Maynard speaking to himself as a child and dealing with his Mothers' illness and death.

To me this song is about the birth of his son. His son name is Devi. His middle initial is h. And it feels like he singing about the change in his life that a child brings. He’s watching his old ways go and new feelings coming over him. Days away I still feel you touching me. Being away from him but still thinking about and realizing the change that’s happening. Considerately killing who he was.

I agree with prison sex being the song for being molested by his father. I originally thought H was about Heroine addiction.

His old man was an asshole. So, he’s afraid he is going to channel that same asshole and monster towards his son. This song is, in a macabre way, a love letter to his son.

Really enjoyed your reaction/review of the song, I have been a huge Tool fan for over 15 years...This entire album is fantastic, I would love to see you listen to more and hear your thoughts on the music and the lyrics. Everyone in Tool is a master of their respective craft. Opiate, Undertow and Aenima are their younger years/more raw and aggressive...but still very...'Tool' later on you get Lateralus, 10,000 Days and now, 13 years since the last album, they released Fear Inoculum. This is a band who makes music you experience. I really hope you dive into more Tool, you seem to dig it so far...I'm going to see if you have heard any others, but yeah, good stuff! H is also means heroin here. snake in heroin effects and his son is coming and he tempted to use it. but its just a layer in song meaning.. a metaphor. he talks about to conection to destruction .. "begging blood" son coming and heroin: they are killing me just the same. snake behind me hisses.. and at the end he says.. i have died... i will die.. thats alright, i dont mind...tool has another one about drugs in this album called third eye. they see drugs as a gateway.

You need to do the new Tool album. Please.

Snakes also represent wisdom/teachers in many cultures, so he probably means both the positive and negative of the various symbolisms , he is quite anti religious. Some people say this song is about his Son (which I think it is) but deeper, he was abused when he was young and could be that he was scared he might pass that on to his own child (as many abusers were abused themselves when younger) although I don't think that really it. but I think this tune represents his sons birth and how it rebirthed him as well, great thing about Tool is the meanings are up to the listener deliberatly so, so it means what it means to you

the snake and the blood he speaks about in the lyrics are his conscience, the snake resembling the serpent which is what is bad/negative (the shadow). the blood resembling all the people who have passed before him (ancestors, family, his elders and his positive/good part of the conscience). the shadow which is the unconscious self is telling him what his damage couldve have been, his ego telling him that he couldve done some good damage and he shouldve. his blood before him reminding him that he needs to open up his heart to heal and not to be manipulated by his ego the serpent, the snake, the shadow. ( i am too connected to you to slip away) that part is about his connection to his higher self, the self that has lived already before his present self and with eyes to see and ears to listen, it can guide you. essentially the spirit guide. (i have died, i will die, i dont mind) in the spiritual community, the belief is that your soul has been through many lives before in order to get where its at now, inside the body you carry, the vessel. it needs to live through phases in order to proceed further into the next stage of evolution and living on earth as a human is one of those phases one must do. so in the lyrics he claims to be aware of this and he doesnt mind dying again. -- this is all just my interpretation but i started to see a pattern in their lyrics a while back and it makes sense to what they are on about, in their new album they dont even seem to hide it anymore, its straight up gospel rock and its freaking dope! the more you listen to their songs the more you realize what they are really talking about. they are really spiritually conscious when it comes to their lyrics forsure. even when it comes to tuning their instruments a certain way and strumming/drumming in certain patterns. they know what they are doing. amazing band.

That doesnt really make any sense with the lyrics. Commonly accepted meaning is that the song is about his at the time unborn son (middle name, just "H."), reflecting on the trauma of his own past and family relations, how to grow as a person and not pass the damage on.

Who the heck starts a reaction in the middle of a song?

The song always came across as describing childhood trauma particularly around sexual abuse which likely occurred when Maynard moved to his dad in his very early teenage years.

This is what this song is to me. This song is about my father. His phyiscal and mental abuse still massively affects me today. I'm 38. Even with years of therapy. He is still consideratly killing me. I still hear his voice hissing what my damage could have been. Years away, I still feel him touching me, changing me. And now that I am 0 contact and I watch as he's drowned, as I look in his eyes (the damage), my fear begins to fade recalling all of the time I could have cried, i should have cried. He killed me; I have died He still is; and i will die Its alright, i don't mind, i don't mind.... because i screamed for help yet was never heard. I am still in theapy. TOOL has helped me cope with so so much trauma . Thank you for validating this point ❤

💯 and the fear of how that trauma might impact his ability to change ('die') to be a good parent to his child until 'the fear begins to fade' when he's born and looks into his son's eyes. This song has deeply moved me since I discovered it as a teen, and now even more so as an adult facing pregnancy and the loved ones in my life who weren't able to overcome their traumas to stay around for their offspring

Brandon Burge if you think of the time the albums were made in many of his friends were on heroin or dieing from heroin.. and being a recovered drug addict myself that’s how it speaks to me at least.
