    Hey Jim we missed you. He’s actually talking about himself. His son holds up the mirror, Or this blood before him. The snake is his defenses. Tool Is the journey inward, it’s best if you read the lyrics as if it were a conversation with yourself. Have an awesome day

    I'm sorry to hear about your dad he sounds like was a good man. It's funny how those coincidences happen like listening to this song on the day of your dads passing. i'm sure you're gonna do great as a father just like he did.

    This song, for me, was always about my heroin relapse shortly after my son was born. It happened when he was about a month old and lasted a little over a week. One night he fell asleep on me and I just sat there awake picturing what his life was going to look like if I went back to that place, and just couldn't do it to him. He just turned three the other day, and my wife and other two kids still have no idea it ever happened.

    I heard this song in 2000 when I was a senior in high school. I had been listening to terrible music before I heard it. It tripped me up and I fell into the rabbit hole that is Tool. It still gets me. I can remember the first time I heard it. Perfectly. ❤️

    I'm one of those who recommended this song in a previous comment when you mentioned your baby. I'd been a father for a couple of years when I finally understood this song. I connected to it not because of a bad childhood but, although this of course is a personal song for Mr Keenan, I felt that same uncertainty about being a father. Like I wasn't prepared for it, like there was no way not to mess her up. This was before her birth and for a long time after. And that feeling of being "too connected to you" to me was scary as hell, but going on five years now I've sort of adapted. Damn I can't find the words in a satisfactory way to pass on how I feel emotionally connected to this song. There are times I hate being a parent, but I would have it no other way, even if it changes me and considerately kills me, it's alright, I don't mind...

    This talks about also that the whole killing me considerately part and all that is about how becoming a parent kills who you used to be and turns you into something else. The snake was his fear of doing what his father did to him as far as raising him. Thanks for reviewing:) Carry on!

    Great song. This was the first song written with Justin chancellor, after their old bassist Paul D'amour left the band. This and 46&2 are the only songs on the record written with chancellor (as far as I know). It's the personal subjects that really bring out the emotion

    A little thought. I have always taken Maynards "snake" in this song to be his own nihilistic worldview previous to becoming a father. His father Mike seems to be a pretty good guy, so I don't think that part of your interpretation is correct. Imho it's basically a song to his son about how him coming into the world changed Maynard and his outlook on life. Looking at his personal lyrics he never really seems to blame anyone else, it's mostly aimed inward at himself and his personal quest for understanding life. Certain divine beings and their devoted followers seem to get their fair share of rage though 😅

  • @warrensmith8606

    @warrensmith8606

    yeah, i didnt think the snake is his father either. I think he did not agree with some decisions of his father but on the whole he isnt a bad person and maynard respects him. His snake is his own selfishness and his ego and his arrogance etc and now he has responsibility and he is coming to terms with that. thats my interpretation.

    01:29 something i always find amazing with tool is they come up with such amazing riffs and they use them sparingly for emphasis rather than basing the song around them. If it was me that came up with this i'd be like, wow theres my songs riff. But its better not to make the song about the riff. Aenima intro riff is another example.

    New to the channel, but I think I have watched 10 of your Tool reactions in a row. I love how everybody “knows” what a Tool song is about lol. That’s the genus though. It gets people talking about interpretation similar to poetry. Maynard does more double and triple entendres than some of the best rappers. I heard that the song was going to be called the bridge , but instead used the letter H which is the basic form of a bridge. Getting from one place to another. The whole album seems to have a theme of personal evolution. In my interpretation he’s letting go of his irresponsible, egotistical, rock star, drug using child self to be there for his son Devo. Yes his name is Devo. The beautiful part about their music though is that I might see it a different way in 5 years. Maynard had a good relationship with his real father. He moved away from Ohio when his mom had an aneurysm, and moved with his father in that state up north. He was actually his wrestling coach. I think it may have been a step father he had issue with. I noticed I didn’t see Jimmy on the list. Great song to react to, if you haven’t already.

    From what I understand, Mallard had a good relationship with his dad, hard work but respect. I think the snake he refers to is just his bad habits, not opening up more emotionally, etc. Some of that actually stems from his mother and her previous boyfriends, as well as I just think being a more closed and somewhat cynical person.

    Yea, something happened to Maynard when he was young. He made it out of it though. His music was more angry back in those days. If you pair that song with prison sex and opiate. And then realize that his whole family was religious then you'll get a sense of what happened in his life. He doesn't tell anyone, only hints at it through his music.
