    Fun Fact...Maynard (vocalist of Tool) and Morello (guitarist of Rage) were roommates before either one got big. Maynard was almost the vocalist for Rage. Morello thought Zack was the better fit and then introduced Maynard to Adam Jones (guitarist of Tool) whom Morello knew since high school and the rest is music history 😊

Neil might have years, albums, experience under his belt in comparison but as a drummer I can hand on heart say Danny could play anything Neil did and not vice versa. Danny is much more technically proficient in odd time signatures mashed with polyrhythms from every single limb at the same time. But it’s based on a farcical notion of having a virtue lead. The issue is anyone who claims highest virtue gets to play king of the hill. And will rule by death and their own lust for power. And de la Rocha is pretty much precisely a proponent of that. Like it’s not shown itself to be inherently unstable. However. Rage is best for what it is. Rage against the machine. Their rage is not wrong. And it’s expressed viscerally and well. It’s not wrong to feel that rage. It’s what you do with it. Whether you become a limp dicked ideologue, or actually consider how to practically improve the system we have. Which I don’t think is what Rage is.

    Welcome to the Tool army! :-) You hit the nail on the head right away - Tool is one of the only bands I can think of where you actually feel smarter after listening to them. The singer (Maynard James Keenan) loves to write complex esoteric lyrics on bizarre subjects not usually found in rock songs. 46&2 is actually based on a concept conceived by Carl Jung and later expounded upon by esoteric researcher Drunvalo Melchizedek (yeah, I never heard of him either) that the next stage of human evolution will result in the addition of two chromosomes, resulting in the evolved humans having a total of 46 (instead of the current 44) autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. The "shadow" is also a Jungian concept - the part of the self that one hates, fears and oppresses. Don't worry, most of us don't really understand it either - it just gives us a ton of stuff to think about. And I think Maynard wants it that way - the struggle to understand the meaning in abstractly expressed lyrics is where the art lies.

Lay back and just listen to the music like we all did back in the day. The lyrics will come when the come, but just enjoy the music. Rapping is all about the lyrics. It's not about being like everyone else but giving it a try and that's what you did. The long instrumentals are my favorite part. They build up, tear it apart, rebuild, tear apart and leave in an epic way. It's a journey. With the right mindset, you'll go in and enjoy it more. One thing I've learned is to manage expectations. And as you give any music more listens and time, it grows on you. Almost always. I've done this and grown to like other genres. I grew up mainly Hip-Hop with some Rock here and there but mainstream stuff. When I started listening to more Rock and then delve in Metal... That was it. I started getting into Metal so much more. I then go into some electronic music too! Now I listening to classic bands I never listened to. Soon gonna start with Jazz. Too much to learn and take away as a Hip-Hop, I know that much. This is why I gotta get into it.

    I'll be subscribing for two reasons. #1 because I love Tool and I'm here to support anyone who also appreciates their talent. #2 because I live the fact you really like to dive deep into lyrics and meaning. Tool is one of the best bands to do this with because Maynard is very exacting with everything he does, so every single lyric has a meaning and purpose in the song. Unlike many other bands who either sing complete nonsense or have "filler" lyrics that just go to the beat when they can't bring their message across. Everything Tool does has a purpose, that's why their lyrics are so fun to dig into. This song has a lot of psychology and biology references. 46 and 2 is a reference to our chromosomes, and in my way of looking at it, when he says they are "just ahead" of him, I think that's a reference to him feeling like a new person once he works through all his shit. The "shadow" is a psychology term for the repressed parts of our subconscious. It's what holds all the parts of us that we can't accept or that we reject. We all aim to see ourselves as good or at the very least, right, so our mind has a natural defence of repressing anything that challenges that. Our shadow is where you will see the worst of ourselves. So Maynard is singing about going through all of it, accepting it as part of him, and using it as a catalyst for change. The metamorphosis. I love the line "contemplate what I've been clinging to" because it really illustrates exactly what he is doing, a deep dive into his own identity and coming to terms with who he is and why he does the things he does. I think this is something we should all strive for as human beings. We do spring clean outs of our homes, but we should also be doing some self "cleaning". Let go of all the things holding us back, accept the parts of ourselves that we try so hard to deny, evaluate our priorities and position in life, and come out the other side of this fresh and clean. A rebirth.

    It's about literally evolving as he's still alive. 'Forty-Six & Two' refers to the number of human chromosomes plus two more, which would make him something "more" human. Or not human at all. But that's what the lyrics make the song about; Shedding skin, searching for clues, the change consume him, etc... He's basically slowly changing into something else

  • @Grannyhoover

    @Grannyhoover

    It’s actually an homage to Karl Jung. 46 and 2 being a representation of our human nature plus the extra two “ chromosomes “ which represent our greed, and malicious nature that comes about from the external world. The shadow was a cornerstone of Junganian philosophy, whereas one cannot truly know one’s self without accepting all the greed malice selfishness and violence. The best man is one that knows he is capable of murder but also knows those are negative traits that should not be acted upon. So it’s a double metaphor because Maynard is a puzzle maker. Lol

    what’s really special about Tool is that with a lot of bands you have 1 or 2 members that are elite and shine. *Every* member of Tool is legitimately god-tier and are consistently ranked among the goats on their individual instruments (Maynard considers his voice an instrument in the band). Danny Carey is widely regarded as the greatest drummer alive by fans and other musicians. i know some others have suggested it, you should def check out the “pneuma danny carey drum cam” video 🤯
