This song is in reference to Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's shadow complex. Basically Carl Jung explains that we all have inner dark primal urges to do things but our good conscious stops us. But one must feed their shadow or it could take control. The title 46 and 2 is in reference to our DNA and having 46 chromosomes and the next evolution is accepting our shadows and that will bring us to enlightenment. 'Stepping thru my shadow coming out the other side, stepping into my shadows 46 and 2 just ahead of me'

This song is about a lot of things, like most of Maynard's lyrics. 46 and 2, though, is in reference to "Nothing in this Book Is True, But It's Exactly How Things Are", a completely batshit occult book. 46 and 2 is the next stage of evolution, according to that book - (23 pairs, plus the 2 sex, as now we have 22 pairs, plus the 2 sex). And, of course, there is also the reference to Shadow Work and using that to fuel the transition.

I listened to and loved Tool for most of my life and it's only recently that I paid attention to the lyrics. Not to say I didn't love the lyrics of certain songs, but I didn't go out of my way to make sure I understood what the song was about and whatnot. I just listened to the music, interpreted the lyrics the way I decided to, and went on with my life as a huge Tool fan. There's no right way to have your mind blown by the best band on the planet. Just enjoy the ride... :)

It's a great question, yours. Tool has an interesting dynamic where the guitarist doesn't lead the band but for a large party lays the foundation of the song with the bass, drums and even maynards vocals to build through together-- especially in the verse. In regards to influence, a big influence on the guitarist Adam Jones was the edge from U2 who brought a similar dynamic to his band.

3:07 correct Toolface. means you're definitely 'getting it'. and the silence at the end is golden. according to legend, this was the first thing written by (then) new bass player Justin Chancellor, and would be a blueprint for everything brilliant the band has done since - ie. taking a fairly simple riff, breaking it down and constructing a song around it. the bass line hardly changes throughout, but it's the construction of the parts around it, the cleverness and variation from the other members that is what i think you mean by it seeming important. it's brilliant, unique writing.

Man seems to be enjoying and appreciating Tool's music. I have found it fascinating - you get into one of their grooves and then they shift gear and/or make a hard turn and you are somewhere else - but it seems perfectly logical one you have got over the surprise. I was initially interested (about 145 years ago) but, as they have developed their thing, I have become more deeply hooked. It is hard to explain what Tool do to someone who has never heard them before. Some people are put off by their polyrhythms, having grown up with 4/4 time in the key of G. Some people just get it PDQ and become total fans. Put me in the second group. Glad to watch someone else totally get it. Intelligent comments, too.

Hey man thanks for finally rewinding a bit after pausing. In your previous tool reactions I yelled at you (at my screen) several times that you had missed some awesome built-up moments by pausing and unpausing like that. Since you actually appreciate the journey that Tool takes you in it was so frustrating to watch you miss those parts of the journey. So good on ya! I wish I could watch you react to more of the songs before you have to pause tho. And I’m wondering how it is that channels like D_Music_Life can listen to the whole Tool song and then do reviews at the end without getting blocked. Just something to look into. Anyway, long story short, I subscribed!🤘

There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything. The Shadow: In Carl Jung's personality theory, the ego represents the individual's sense of personal self. The sense of personal identity is purchased, however, at the expense of certain tendencies that are rejected as 'not-self'. According to Jung, these rejected traits come together as a kind of unconscious 'counter-ego' which he termed the shadow. We may become unduly anxious or irritated when in an environment or around a person that in some way reminds us of repressed aspects of our self. If a person has rejected his or her own sex drive, for example, that person may feel irrational fear or anger around an overtly sexual individual. The shadow may appear as a person in one's dreams, usually as an individual of the same sex. Of all the archetypes, the shadow is the most powerful and potentially the most dangerous. It represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise. The meaning of 46 + 2: According to Melchezedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids'. These grids extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns “Sacred Geometry”. Each species has its own grid, which supports life, and connects the consciousness of its particular species. Before any species can come into existance or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissoves. A new grid was completed in 1989 - the 'christ-consciousness' grid. This grid will allow humans to evolve into our next version. We'll develop two additional chromosomes (which are really 'geometrical images' designed to resonate with our specific grid) for a total of 46 + 2. The main change will be a shift to the "unity consciousness". Every cell in your body has its own consciousness and memory. You, the higher being that occupies your body, make the millions of different consciousnesses in your body work together as one being. How does this relate to this grid? Think of yourself as a cell and the grid as the higher being. We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity.

Thank you so much for your comment! The explanation of the Jungian "Shadow", the chromosomal combinations that are not only widely unknown- but sadly less widely accepted as the semi-axiom they are, as the rigors(which also serve as limitations and barriers) of the "It Ain't Broke..." scientific method, as well as the RELIGIOUS commitment of human scientists to the same old Massively Funded University Study - style itinerary for the remaining days of our kind....this faith in the very reliable and equally important, no "boo science!" Jargon here...buuuut, so many meaningful discoveries remain hidden bc of the LAW pertaining to anything "supernatural" that cannot quickly be debunked and serve as lab coat nerd joke fodder (The "Paranormal Investigation" boom and the bullshit hacks/bogus af "field gear" - XBoX Kinnect is not a tool for outlining shadowy spirits, duh! Not to mention the basic sleight of hand skill necessary to make even a seasoned Nothing/Nobody Hunter believe in anyone's personal Haunting Problem.... whatever, I say leave it to the Ghostbusters and the world of scripted filmed comedies - because there are so many other less sensational but critical paths to take on. Dr.Jung and his brilliant insights and unabashed belief in "the supernatural"(maybe less sexy, but "extra/inter-dimensional" has always been my preferred designation) despite it alienating some of the more arrogant closed minded members of the Old Guard of the ironically young sciences of the psychiatric/psychological variety...We still refuse to make it an official form of inquiry worthy of that same goddamned precious grant money, and any of the non- scheduled areas that are not a joke? Shot instantly down. Totally dismissed by the same scientific minds who have become more concerned with their tenure, publication, peer reviews, and what they see as valuable contributions to a given field of scientific research - which is also purely solipsistic careerist bullshit that CANNOT, especially in these times, in any way serve our species in the ways that we should be concerned with...and concerned FAT above so many other things! Until the Human race can at last have a solid subgroup of scientists whose minds are totally committed to breakthroughs in the realms that are dismissed by todays exclusive and boring community of researchers; they have zero grants, zero awards, zero chance to advance within their well tread chosen specialties...we are NO WHERE NEAR capable of truly understanding and explaining the majority of that which lies within our embarrassingly limited Cosmoc Horizon due to... the fact that the technology needed to make critcial discoveries regarding Dark matter, Dark energy, the invisible world of the vacuum of space, etc. is merely a matter of OUR own limitations as observers, compounded by the lack of promising new tech to make up for the human factor and its constant presence as a reminder of how little we have been able to make significant gains in, say, astronomy, physics, astrophysics, to say naught of all the daily "new information" regarding the mysterious activities and behavior of all quantum processes...we like to think that we have come SO far from Einstein's famous description of the quantum realm as "spooky", Einstein was not a word mincer by any means- and we have only amassed thousands of pieces of material, "evidence", really just a raft of information that doesn't have any current practical applications beyond reinforcing Einstein's own personal response to the things he had initially seen within this new frontier of science which was championed, and still is, as the most important area of inquiry as it relates to unlocking solid, scientifically viable answers to the ancient questions of the universe: How? Why? When? Followed by, well...NOT this state of disarray we have been in! Naw...by this once so super stooopid futuristic sounding year 2020, the optimistic view was that we would be on the verge of incredible progress and breakthroughs that were barely imaginable... we could have been assigning some of our best to make - on their own time, after the daily sifting through of temporarily unusable data - real strides in the study of that which is still verboten within the world of scientific research! Whatever could fit the definition of "supernatural" more than the bizarre contradictions of reality as we swear to know it - without even a slight veer in any other direction - regularly(and almost mockingly) presented by quantum processes... let's just not make the basic connection to the rise in confusion/the times we peer into or "study" (using our tried&true methods, our central dogmatic language and strictures that perhaps have no place within a wholly separate reality of strange phenomena...well, of course its "strange" to our limited dyed in the wool adherence to the successful formulae... for OUR "known & documented" dimensions and observable phenomena!) evolution is not a mere matter of adaptation and natural selection over long epochs... things are able to evolve based upon what precise machinations of a particular set of any larger system are in need of an appropriate allocation of time and resources. Nature is all set to continue its cold indifferent thing as far as Macro evolution, and we have no say in this at all... let's get to work on the things that we and ONLY we do indeed have a say in! I'm just tired now... all i meant to do was say "Good Work, chap! As Refreshing a KZread comment as I have ever laid eyes upon." Thanks, fellow Soldier for True awareness!

May I suggest that you consider the entire Tool discography as a journey in itself. You’ve heard a lot of their newer more complex songs but their early songs are shorter and harder and a force of nature onto themselves. And understanding where they’ve been gives you a deeper grasp of where they went after. Listen to some of their first songs from the early 90s like Hush and Opiate to see what I mean. Spiral out, my friend.
