"Too Many People On Benefits" | Cuts In Welfare System

The prime minister is suggesting that tax cuts will be on the horizon if the government successfully tightens the rules for claiming out-of-work and sick benefits. Rishi Sunak made his stance on welfare and financial policies as part of his growing election campaign.
In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the prime minister aimed to highlight the differences between the Conservatives and Labour as the election campaign gains momentum.
Petrie Hosken speaks with deputy policy editor Sophia Worringer and autor Richard Power-Sayeed.

The only difference is the upper classes just take more and more without giving anything back. The biggest failure of our times.

The priority should be making corporations pay correct amount of Taxes. The priority be not funding wars and killing of innocent women and children. We have money to fund wars and bombs but not for junior doctors and others. Pay rise in level with inflation. The priority should be a fair wage. If your working full time have enough money to pay all your expenses. Subsidising corporations so they don't have to pay a living wage so top up with benefits. Get your priority right. There used to be a manufacturing company called Remploy that had factories all over the country who employed disabled WW2 war veterans from 1945, then it employed disabled people up to its closure in 2006 . Every single disabled person who worked there has never found a job since it closed down. That company had different divisions that did: Electrical Assembly. Cabinet making. Bookbinding. Textiles including a big contract providing the army with combat clothing. But not one employer gave them a job because of being disabled.

My thoughts - there are loads of different mental health diagnoses and each one has their own unique symptoms, please do not fall into the trap of thinking mental health is only about depression it is not and your judgements do not help with people being open about their own mental health diagnoses. Going for a jog may help some but not others for many reasons that are not taken into consideration. Judging people with mental health will not get them back to work, if you are focusing your attention on this group of people you are only making your life worse by believing others are better off than yourselves, concentrate on your own life and improve your own circumstances rather than others that you think are riding the system. Also the government wants you to focus on this in order to take away the attention away from the amount of money they are giving to immigrants that have arrived in our country and have not contributed to our system and this seems to be working for the government, because I don’t hear you talking or judging about how much money is being given to immigrants who have not paid into our system. I had three part-time jobs at age 13, newspaper round before school, collecting for a football charity once a fortnight, and a saturday job. Saturday jobs for them to earn some pocket money in retail doesn't exist anymore. Few parents give their children chores to do for their pocket money. At age 15 I was working full-time, and with a saturday and evening job too. If youngsters don't get the opportunities to learn young, the older they get, their less inclined to engage with the big wide world. Plus mass migration has also demoralized many Brits and in some areas they're totally outnumbered. That impacts on their psyche in a detrimental way. @@GiacomoSorbi

Please stop persisting with the regular interviews/appointments with Jobcentre as we are working but have difficult limitations. The constant stress of being scrutinised for our conditions doesn't help. 2.) Make talking therapies more readily available. Ideally in short time. Talking therapies helped me get out of a very dark place and honestly saved my life. I would recommend it to anyone with mental health problems like depression & anxiety.

Get real with this subject, people on benefits are not living the life of luxury, unlike the millionaires and billionaires swindling the tax payer, still waiting for the PPE! If the economy was better managed, fewer people would be suffering mental health issues. If the government did not starve the NHS, mental health services in particular, fewer people would need benefits because they would be receiving the appropriate treatment. I am fed up with journalists vilifying those on low income, who suffer the most when the economy is mis-managed in favour of those who take public money to line their already bulging pockets and spend it abraod. Yes, there will always be a minority who work the benefits system, but, comparatively speaking, they are less than a drop in the ocean in terms of how many millionaires and billionaires take tax payers money for they own ends

Further, 'Universal Credit' & HMRC, is crossing so many barriers in terms of privacy & data protection concerns that it would be extremely difficult to 'fob off the system'. At some point people have to realise that it's 'big government' that is the problem, who give tonnes of money to civil servants, migrants (legal & illegal), foreign aid (particularly billions to India who have their own space program).

Support workers for people with complex mental health issues appear to have no creative ideas, but again are pressured to tick boxes. When we begin seeing people as individuals with unique gifts and potential, the mental health of the population in this country may improve; but the ridiculous methods implemented in all of our services and institutions just shoves the problem down the road creating bigger problems in the long term.

You now have to prove that you are actively seeking work or you get sanctioned(new speak for money docked). What about the people who are well housed, warm and well fed yet are still falsely claiming hundreds of £ a month fraudulently? How long do we allow people to class themselves as sick? If you break your leg and can't work do we continue paying benefits once the leg is healed or send them back to work? If you beat cancer are you still entitled to sick benefits for life or do they stop when you are healthy enough to work? Do we keep paying people with mental health issues even when they refuse any treatment? Nobody is against benefits bud as majority of sane people are aware they are there for emergency use. Its the abuse of benefits that has become a problem. If you got stranded on a desert island with a dozen people and you had to graft to survive. You would soon get sick of supporting the lazy people who make excuses yet take your resources. Majority of people take modern life for granted because it's actually easy and our essentials to live are all provided.

@@kieranb7047 If you were at all aware of just what evidence one has to present and from whom to derive a successful sickness benefit claim, you would not be asking such questions. As I am aware it is posited by exactly the people I mentioned for the purposes of causing the unthinking to not only turn against their own as a distraction from what they wealthy are doing, but to get the unthinking to by way of a quirk of democracy authorise the removal of the safety net their national insurance payments exist to pay for. Of which is exactly how we lose our rights in this country ; the well housed, well warmed and well fed and not interested in you beyond what you can be conned into doing for them have to have the nations request that something is done about what the well housed, well warmed and well fed have informed you exists. But you ask how long do ' we allow ' people to be deemed sick, to tell you that is what the work capability assessment (WCA) exists for and I can tell you from experience it's not a push over as it's caused the suicide of many and very nearly my own when my military service derived mental ill health was at it's worse. But if it's education you seek, may I recommend the Disability News Service of which will furnish you with what is accurate as opposed to what the well housed, well warmed and well fed are telling you exists. But note the DWP despite being ordered to is refusing to release into the public domain a report on the number of welfare claimants lost to suicide as a result of Tory welfare policy to potentially describe another number to pile on top of the Covid dead - estimates suggest the number is in the hundred thousands.

Housing allowance are a huge part of benefits. In London a single mom with 2 kids of different gender gets 2000 housing allowance for working 20 hours a week on minimum wage. This way she will never move out of London and will never want to work longer hours or for higher salary, as this benefit will be cut and she'll have to pay for housing out of her own pocket. This creates this liw income trap - you get housing and UC as long as you don't earn much. I think the government should not cover more than 50% of the rent, the amount should be capped nationwide without any special exceptions for London, and this benefit should be for everyone, but for people who pay tax it should come as a tax free allowance.

Well I’m glad you’re not in government, given how hard it is to rent in London. You’d evict a single mum and kids to save the tax payer up to 15000 per year when temporary housing costs about 1000 per week- that’s 52,000 per year- or worse- if that means her kids going into care instead of being on the streets, that’s even more expensive (and wrecks their lives too)

When you are better off on benefits rather than working why should people work. Wages are too low and benefits too high.

@@JB-el3mo BS. Either very well off or on benefits due to a BS system. Are you working for low pay like I am?
