The thing about the Twinning is that its very design tells a whole story. The exarch kind of offhandedly says "oh yeah, they woke me up way in the future so they could send me back", but that's a whole journey generations long that just kind of gets brushed over. The twinning shows us the real guts of the Crystal tower where the magic happens, where it connects to the very lifestream using the same visual cues that were used in FF7. The fact that the Ironworks toiled for all these decades to master the technologies of the crystal tower, of omega, of alexander, is told through straight-up level design. They created an artificial god and mastered time travel-a trick that even Emet Selch apparently didn't know how to do, given his desire to interrogate the exarch about it. The whole dungeon is filled with trash mobs implied to be created not by the Allagans, but by the Ironworks, over decades and decades of experimentation in a post-apocalyptic world. Not to mention it's a callback to three different expansions and has one of the best tracks in the world to go along with it. Like, I love Amaurot and it's one of the best setpieces in the game, but it's essentially just repeating what Emet's told you multiple times over by that point.

I do Twinning just for fun. For me, the story of it makes it more weighty. The thrust of the thematics in Twinning is that a group of people saved another group of people with no hope of salvation for themselves. They literally send their hope (their literal symbol of hope, the CT) through time and space. Thereby, the Ironworks prove Emet wrong. There are people, many people, generations of people, who were ready and willing to sacrifice themselves for others. It's the kind of dungeon that gets more meaningful with more thought and playthroughs...

The Twinning is a great example of how Chat can overhype a segment almost into disappointment. Instead of discovering The Twinning on their own the way most of us did, GG had to hear people going over it so much that they thought it was going to be better than Amaurot. Actually a decent microcosm of Shadowbringers in general.
The boss of Akademia I'm pretty sure is one of the Words of Lahabrea and not Laha himself, they work directly for him in creation magicks
the Twinning does both show and tell you... through song! The song is the beat of Alexander, the guitar and vocals of Omega, and the melody of Syrcus Tower. The way they use musical memory to reinforce the lore they're trying to convey is why I love that dungeon so much.
It's so satisfying to see that literally, and I mean LITERALLY every single streamer's reaction to the 3rd stage of the Amaurot dungeon is just utter bafflement for at least a solid 10 seconds. Really hard to beat that dungeon. But something might.

All Garret needs is a streak of white hair, and he can totally cosplay Emet. Given that emet's outfit is mostly just cloth and fur, a good seamstress/tailor could craft the costume, no movie magic props needed.

Quetzalcoatl is a mini-Zodiark. It's a created being made from a single Amaurotine giving their life (who definitely wasn't Lahabrea). If one Amaurotine giving their life to create a concept to defend others made a level 80 dungeon boss, think of what half the population of the world giving their life to make Zodiark made. That's the point of it in lore, at the point in time of this dungeon, the Amaurotines were figuring out how they were going to do their ultimate summoning. So here's a micro example of what a single person summoning is like.
@Nehfarius

I recall an interview regarding the first four dungeons where the developers said they had challenged themselves to reinvent the stereotypical dungeon types, I.e forest dungeon, water dungeon, ancient ruins and abandoned mine. In particular they wanted to see if they could make a better version of coperbell mines.

Academia Anyder also explores the backstory for one of the major FATEs in the zones. Those kinds of things can carry the period between the launch of the expansion and the first major content patch.
For those curious (like I was), Anyder is the name of the river that runs through Utopia in the book of the same name by Sir Thomas More.
I think part of the hype with the Twinning was putting together the last few lore answers about how the hell G'Raha Tia teleported a building across time and dimensions to get here and make the plot of Shadowbringers happen. I know I was recommending it prior to 5.0 wrap-up for that reason. That, and the meme.
I can't wait for the final "THE ENTIRE WALL OF DUNGEONS" once you guys are caught up to see where these match up against all the rest, or even against later Shadowbringers and Endwalker dungeons. The dungeon deepdive of Holminster has me going "Hoo boy, these guys are gonna lose their minds in [redacted]". Mt. Gulg was a spectacle. Amaurot was the escalation I knew you'd love with the setpieces and escalation of "crisis in the city" to "watch this city crumble" to "watch the world burn from space!". Twinning is just pure crack for the ears. You still have some treats here and there. Some cool trials, some cool dungeons, and dare I say it: Some cool solo duties. Definitely don't want to overhype them though, I'm not sure any of them will beat Amaurot or Hades in terms of hype. But I'm sure you'll still have a great time on the whole.

I love Dohn Mheg--it's fairy mini golf!!! It's one of my favorites though haha 🤣 puts me in a good mood.
Low-fi Ascian Beats To Rejoin The Shards To is a particularly great track. Did you ever pick up that it's a rearrangement of "Without Shadow", the ascian theme from ARR? (The Akadaemia Anyder theme is actually called Shadows Withal for those curious).
to me, the perfect word to describe Malikah's well tune is "eerie". I love the dungeon btw, one of the best replay values among ShB dungeons imo (it keeps grinding up in my mind each time I run it)
The last area of Amaurot became my live desktop wallpaper for a long time, reminds me of the main title screen for Mass Effect 3. Then EW came and one of the zones of that expansion said "hold my beer". Those level designers in CBU3 deserve all the praise they get.
My favorite thing about Unwound, the track used in Qitana Ravel, is that it leans on woodwinds and wooden percussion, which are instruments the Maya - who inspired the zone’s ruins - would have used in the pre-Columbian period.
When you exit the cave in Qitana Ravel and see the giant tree in the distance, and the pink birds fly across, that is 100% the title screen of Secret of Mana and I love it every time.

The second Amaurot boss is a model pulled directly from FFXII, as is at least one other model of enemy from that dungeon. In FFXII it's just a generic mob you can encounter later in the game lol. You've probably had this pointed out before, but TONS of models in FFXIV come from both FFXII and FFXIII.
Qitana Ravel is one of my favorite dungeons in the game. The music reminds me of those nature videos we used to watch as 90s kids in science class growing up, as does the Raktika music.
8:09 "Do you know what the word 'cute' means?" The sheer breadth of things that Kyle describes as 'cute' is BAFFLING to me. (I say this with kindness!)

The lack of lava could be easily explained by the presence of light aether. The lava is infused with stasis thus this appears as rock.
It's funny them comparing Mt Gulg music to "final fantasy music", because it doesn't really sound Nobuo-ish at all to me haha. Anyway, I definitely expect a full wall of dungeons when you finally catch up on everything! (And no hate for the music Holminster please, I love that track. Great vid, Regarding quetzalcoatl i think all we were really meant to take from it was that they were creating creatures to combat the terminus monsters. and that this particular creature was so powerful that it would even expend a whole amaroutines worth of energy.
You will notice, all dungeons in ShB appart from Twinning, The Anyders and Paghlathan are rearrangement of the zone they are in. But Anamnesis is a jazz remix of Sastasha (Hard) and Paglathan is a remix of the Amalja beast tribe area. Because yes, both Holminster Switch and Grand Cosmos are rearrangement of Lakeland's theme. So in that sense, it's kinda creative use of an existing melody.
"You convinced me of something I already like" is the theme of Shadowbringers as a whole, both Patch Quests and Side content included.
I appreciate the levels of genuine reactions you guys have to the twinning. I'm finally not alone in the "the twinning is REALLY good but not the best thing since sliced bread" camp. Felt really bad when I just seemed like I couldn't see what all the hype was about with that dungeon other than the banger music and lore details.
mt. gulg is my favorite shadow bringers for a meta reason. you can pull straight from the entrance to the first boss, and straight from the second boss to the third. i feel awesome everytime i do it.
Don Mheg is like a giant fairy themed mini golf course
You'll appreciate the music of Akadaemia Anyder even more once you listen to it (from about 40 seconds onward) and 'Without Shadow' from 1.0/ARR side by side and realize it uses the same leitmotif. The facility was overseen by Lahabrea, after all.
A note on Mithrodates. Kyle was right that this boss model screams Final Fantasy. There’s a secret boss in FFXIII called Vercingetorix that uses this model. Check it out I think you might agree.
A thing that's often overlooked about Malikah's Well is how massive the entire complex is. Remember when Alisaie mentioned there are caves and mines that would be a perfect hiding place but it would take her quote weeks to explore them? Which is why Ryne got the idea to seek out her Oracle of Light powers in the first place? We're being led through on a straight shot of this place and likely only seeing a tiny fraction of it.

I want GG invited to 7.0's media tour. And for Yoshi-P to start it off: "About your "Wall of" series" 😜
The hype is understandable on the Twinning. Absolute banger of a track, but that specific kind of banger everyone can get behind. It's optional so we hype it to get folks to run it at all. And for some, SOME the revelations of the efforts of the aborted futures Ironworks and the Sons of St Coinach's Find with G'raha? Yeah, that's a trifecta of hype. I mean what narrative can you quote that can justify yeeting a skyscraper through space and time by tying together 3 seperate stories in the same world? CTs continental aether manipulation and later dimension door abilities, Omega and its ability to sail the void, along with Alex (physically built for realsies this time, no primal short cuts, no cuts!) for the time travel? so cool.
I probably would have liked any way, but I have to like every video I watch with Tim Curry's Space clip

I know, if they were going to mistake any ancient you'd think they'd mistake that person for Mitron considering they were actually involved in Akademia Anyder, lol.
Someone has likely mentioned it already, but Mithradates is an optional boss from FF13; a chunk of the enemy models in The Twinning, including the Flanborgs, the Zaghnal, and Mithradates, are taken straight from FF13, and many of the Allagan robotic enemies, such as the Dreadnaught, are originally from FF13, as well
Its been so long since the last dungeon wall! I missed it 😭
Not sure if you guys know this but the music from The Twinning is available in the Mogtome event right now. Great video, as always!
Part of me is afraid to scroll through the comments to see how many people had to point out (myself included), that wasn't Lahabrea at the end of Anyder. That being said, I think the boss was supposed to be a precursor to the concept of using life force to summon an entity, akin to a primal, which they would then extrapolate to the summoning of Zodiark. Personally I think the FF references are there as convenient easter eggs for FF fans, but wielded in the lore of the game. In this case, they needed/wanted a primal like being, and it was one of those "He lets use X for it." Def falls into unexplained/alluded to vagaries category though. I was wrong only my guesses for only two of your dungeons. I really though Mt Gulg would land at the bottom of Epic and Don Mheg at the bottom of grindable.
As a controller player who has trouble walking straight ahead, the Dohn Mheg tightrope walk is the death of me.
The weird artficiality of Dohn Mheg to me makes it BETTER. There is always something like this in Fae stories where they are so obesssed with inhuman beauty that it kinda flips around into a an eerie artificiality in their work. So to me it fits a lot. Garrish, as Garrett describes what he dislikes of the dungeon, to me very much describes a Fae creature. So it's perfect.

I'm surprised, albeit glad, that The Twinning was able to hold its own for you. I was there when it was writ--I mean, when you found it to be overhyped, and I can totally understand. A lot of folks found the story incredibly satisfying, so when paired with a great dungeon, it's hard not to get excited. This may be the first wall where there's nothing I'm particularly _upset_ to see in its place. I would have bumped Don Mheg up to low Grindable--I'm always happy to see it on Levelling Roulette, it's bright and colorful and just challenging enough to be distinct--but I totally get your criticisms and recognize that it isn't perfect. (I, too, never can remember the name of the second boss, even though it's arguably the coolest one in there mechanically!) Can't wait to see the Shadowbringers wrap-up wall. I'm pretty confident there's a dungeon up ahead that you'll want to squeeze between your two high-Epic dungeons. But we'll see.
I'm wheezing over that birdman clip 😂😂😂
@31:00 Fun fact! Mithridates is actually a superboss from Final Fantasy XIII ! If memory serves, you have to beat every single Cieth Stone mission (which is a kind of side quest subcategory in that game) and this boss is the very last one. I... never had the patience to get through FFXIII start to finish, nevermind all the Cieth Stone missions (that's strictly personal preference). It was fitting since a lot of the dungeon borrows elements from FFXIII, like the Alpha Zaghnol is actually what a Behemoth in FFXIII looks like, then there's the Flanborgs and the machina, and the kind of industrial cyberpunk architecture throughout! So Kyle is technically correct that it is, indeed, a Final Fantasy boss! XD
I'd say the dull mine dungeon feel works in Melikah's Well's favor, because at first it's kinda generic, you're fighting a random animal and a broken talos... then you break through the crystal wall and tunnel under the Empty itself and things get really ????ed up as you see the remains of what looks like a last ditch underground shelter filled with sin eaters formed out of the very rocks and maybe even some of the creatures and people who tried to hide down there from the Flood.
I've run the Qitana Ravel on Duty Support and Trust SO many times, grinding for the gearsets. Something about the Ravel Keeper's outfits, I just love them. Especially the arm/hand guard stuff for several of the classes, basically boils down to tattoo sleeves on their arms, with this bicep bands. Damn I thought Mt. Gulg would be an easy epic after how much you guys seemed to love it during the stream and in the standalone video
Therion holds a special place in my heart due to the way my three friends and I cleared it, in that we looked nothing up, and made a lot of mistakes leaving me, the paladin, to stand alone against him alone with fewer and fewer platforms, healing myself to survive damage, using my invuln and a tank LB to avoid the last hyperbeams, it was insane And my friends went crazy when he went down. They’ve been less impressed as I’ve continued to do this exact thing in a number of dungeons afterwards but I gotta say… paladin just has the tools. Given you play it right you won’t die ever
You should do a per expansion competition video once you catch up completely. Get all the dungeons from a given expansion and let them face off against each other, then let the winners of each expansion face off against each other and see what falls where. And then do the same for the worst dungeons. That sounds interesting and fun.

Chthonic Riddle / Therion isn't a reskin, but it is a clear homage. I think an interesting parallel is that the character that this homage links to has very clear similarities to Emet Selch himself. They both belong to groups who yearn to "return" to something they despair at losing, and to do so they scheme and manipulate to literally sacrifice millions to attain their goal.

Dohn Mheg may be among giants, but if you take into account that lore speaking the Fauth are said to be the spirits of drowned children- it fits extremely well with what a bunch of kids would think of for this illusory forest and castle they made It's not top tier, but it is cool how they captured that "yeah kids probably did this" kinda vibe considering the lore, nothing really makes sense at the start theres just random floating flowers and sparkles and random fantasy elements strewn about, and the castle is a kinda generic castle but with water- no MAGIC water.
