Tonsillectomy Experience | A Day by Day Vlog

Hey you! If you've stumbled upon this video because you're uber nervous about an upcoming tonsillectomy, then fear no more. This is a day by day (missing a couple days) vlog of my experience where I hope to put your mind at ease.
All opinions on the following experience are just that, opinions. I am not a health professional nor do I claim to be remotely amateur when it comes to the science of the body. All tips are simply what I found best for me.
Social Media:
Instagram: @katrena
katrena?hl=en
Tips/things I forgot to mention:
1. The natural taste in your mouth will not be the same for weeks (Im going on week 6 and still have a weird taste in my mouth)
2. You will have an excess in mucus production that is incredibly annoying but totally natural. This will stop once you hit two weeks.
3. Your breath will also take a hit for the first couple weeks, no matter how much you brush.
4. Don't workout for the first two weeks.
5. You will experience minor ear pain.
6. DO NOT USE A SPIT CUP! SWALLOW AS MUCH AS YOU CAN NO MATTER HOW INFREQUENTLY. It's all a part of the healing process (at one point, I was swallowing once every 10 minutes. None the less, I always swallowed).
Thank you for watching!

I am on day 4 and my friends and family have been super helpful! First day was great didn’t feel pain. The third day I felt a lot of aches in the ears and throat- a huge migraine as well. Honestly I feel like it’s because I wasn’t eating and sleeping a lot which caused me to be behind on meds. Tips! Use ice packs for aches. Take medications. Rest up! Make sure people are there to help you. I don’t talk much I feel like it helps. I try to stay active trying to do activities small things. Like this if you want updates.

I’m considering getting my tonsils out because I’ve had recurring tonsil stones paired with ear pain on and off for about a year now. I’m super nervous about the recovery and losing all that weight. I’m glad you didn’t tell us the weight you lost bc in fact I might have been triggered, lol. Did you have any ear pain before your surgery? And also did you during your recovery? I hope you can continue to keep us updated on your process! I’ve heard that it takes up to a year for a full recovery, but it varies between people I’m sure.

Hi Kyra, thanks so much for watching! I totally understand. I knew weight loss was naturally a part of the process. Please dont be too nervous. I never experienced ear pain before my surgery. During the recovery I did experience some (Ive heard others say the ear pain was the worst part but that just was not the case for me, it was super minimal). I will tell you now, I am 5 months in and I still have this weird feeling in the back of my throat. It gets worse when I dont stay hydrated. My doctor said to expect full healing at the 6 month mark or even a year. The surgery is sooo worth it to no longer have stones. I hope you have a good experience should you choose the surgery!

Thanks so much for posting this, girl! Very informative. I'm actually getting surgery soon, too. I am wondering if you could explain more about what it was like to get put to sleep? This is the part that freaks me out!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!

  • @katrenathings

Why hello there, thank you for your compliment! I was so afraid for that part too! Like, what if I wake up during surgery and my life becomes a horror film?! But trust me, the surgeons who perform the anesthesia know what they are doing and will prep and assure you beforehand. Many questions are asked to ensure your safety before you go under. Girl, I tried to fight it. It is impossible. They give you laughing gas before which makes you feel weird but not in a bad way (I actually started laughing and had to fight myself to stop). Then there is the injection through your arm which again, is impossible to fight. It's like the sleep process but rapidly sped up. Your eyes will start to feel heavy, and then you're out. Next thing you know, they will be waking you up (they don't wake you up for a while initially). I remember about 20 seconds after they put the mask over my face (this releases the laughing gas), I slowly said "This tastes really bad." Immediately after I said bad, I was out. You will be fine :)

Also, when did your scabs fall off? Again, thanks for doing this.

Hahahaha everything you said, yes! Hunger withdrawals on level 100. You crack me up. But your food choices are the staples of the recovery. Careful because the ice pops might start hurting. Aw Bri I wish I could tell you when they fell off, but I was far too scared to look back there. I feel like I remember the sensation of something coming off the back of my throat around day 10. Thanks for watching!

Sarah Dagnino Today makes a week since I got mine out, and everything she said in this video is 100% true. I knew the pain would be be, but I did not think it would be as excruciating as it has been. I’m still not able to eat, it just hurts too bad. Some tips that you NEED to do, 1. always drink liquids. Set alarms throughout night cause your throat will get dry and that’s when the pain is unbearable. 2. Stay on top of your medications. Going without it for even an hour is so painful. 3. Try not to get down on yourself. It’s gonna be awful, and I’m only a week in. But just try to stay positive and think about every day being one day closer to it all being over.

Significantly worse with the sore throat but bearable enough to get water down. Still not worse than my worse throat infection. Definitely super tired. Was prescribed norco and I’m taking that every 4-6 hours with Tylenol in between if I’m doing the 6 hour mark.. honestly this video helped me prepare so much more

Last I was told you're not supposed to take ibuprofen because it's an NSAID and thins the blood. If bleeding were to occur it makes it harder to clot. I personally did bleed on day three because of a hiccup. Luckily it clotted, but yea that's the only thing I'll say. Consult with your doctor mine told me to take liquid Tylenol(Acetominophen) if I had problems with the hydrocodone. Also one other tip if you have the liquid hydrocodone with Acetominophen and Alcohol. Measure out your dosage and then dilute with water. It'll make the alcohol burn way less and make it easier to go down. I personally went to walmart and in the kitchen section found a measuring shot glass basically because my bottle didn't have one. (1 table spoon = 15 ml) The alcohol made it a nightmare to swallow. for a little it got stuck in my nose, drinking water was hard for a couple days felt like I was drowning(same sense if you've been in a pool and had water go in your nose). If that happens I'd say go get jello. A large pack is 4 cups of water and when it fully sets it wont go up your nose. Just for anyone who does take the pain killer they get. It really helps and makes me feel normal. I've had some pretty bad ear aches and it makes those go away.

I’m on day 8 and I have a couple of tips for anyone who may be getting the surgery soon or in the future. Day 8 is when I started to feel better but I could eat solid foods with minimal pain and even drink water as normal. (Don’t be like me and smoke cigarettes while your recovering, probably the worst idea I’ve had, use it as a opportunity to quit smoking.) The night of day 7 I was in intense pain to the point I went to the emergency room because I had no more pain killers and Tylenol was not working, they gave me 600 mg ibuprofen for pain and then some throat numbing medicine, I forgot the name but when I find it I will edit this and come back. Diet: the first few days do NOT eat anything solid you will hurt like hell instead eat popsicles and dairy free ice cream (dairy causes saliva build up in the back of your throat). Try avoiding oily foods because that does the same thing. Eat soup and drink chicken broth, don’t make it to hot though it may hurt. If you can’t drink water normally chew on a lot of ice not only will it numb the pain but it will also hydrate you. Play alot of video games to keep your mind off the pain. Save your pain killers for the very moment after you wake up because that’s when the pain is the worst. Try not to talk so much until around day 5. Take long relaxing baths with Epson salt and light candles and play peaceful music. Rest as much as you can and try to eat as much as you can because it will help the healing process. Don’t eat anything with citric acid or drink sprites. Or sodas in general. The pain is unbearable until after day 7 I promise you! You will be okay!

Thank you for watching! Oh I totally know that feeling. It felt like my uvula was just swollen and constantly almost making me gag. That will definitely go away with time. As well as the difficulty swallowing. I recently went to my doctor to ask about some tender spots that I still have (it's been 3 months since my surgery). He basically told me that complete healing does not occur until around 6 months. So, if you are not completely normal by then, it would be time to worry. Until then, happy healing!

Did you lose your sense of taste? If so, how long until it came back? I've read some scary stories about people permanently losing their sense of taste. Thanks!

Hey Julian, I never lost my ability to taste. There was just a funky extra taste that lasted for about 2 months (it was especially prevalent when I ate fruit for some weird reason) The surgery shouldn't affect your tongue.

I got mine out 15 days ago.. My ears still hurt when I eat and it feels like something is stuck at the back of my throat like a scab or a stitch. Also I'm still barely eating soup. I've lost a lot of weight and all I can think about is food. Also my mouth constantly has a horrible kind of bitter taste.

day 4 today, freaking starving i blended my chicken soup and it helped so much to drink with a straw. I also shredded a piece of bread into my cooled coffee and ate it with a spoon, yes it was soggy but if was so filling. Im in so much pain, my ears hurt as well. Just glad i haven't hemorrhaged or anything like that

@@maryie9876 Wow. I’m on day 5, and I’ve lost a little over 10 lbs. 🤯I’d rather not eat because it’s painful. Soggy bread is good.

Hello Alexandria! My voice overall did not change. However, I do have a slightly different way that I have to say my L's now which is weird. And you will definitely be asleep!
