    Its Day 5, the pain is getting worse. I can’t sleep. I can’t stop looking at the clock to take my meds. The maximum sleep I can get is of 3 hours. Then I wait the rest 3 hours to take a painkiller. I also had my adenoids removed. What’s legit making me cry is my ear and jaw pain, it is unbearable. I hope no one has to go through a pain like this. Stay strong guys, what’s done is done, can’t go back but definitely not forgiving the doctor who said I’d be okay in 1-2 days.

    I’m 28 years old, I’m on day 8 post surgery, every morning the pain is crazy for about 25 minutes straight until the tablets kick in, literally having morphine tablets every 6 hours and paracetamol in between, can eat 1 meal a day now and only drinking water and juice, the pain in the mornings is next level, the doctors need to give more realistic expectations about recovery. Saying you will be okay after a week is ridiculous. Good luck to anyone having them out, make sure you get plenty of pain management

    I had my tonsils out November 21st 2022 (this past monday) the first few days after surgery weren't terrible definitely still painful but manageable. It wasn't until Thursday or Friday of that week just 4 days after the surgery my pain went through the roof! I couldn't eat,drink water,I couldn't talk or swallow, and sleeping was impossible. I've always felt my pain tolerance was high in general but as a 32 year old man there was times I felt like crying because I didn't know what more I could do for the pain. I was taking the medications on top of using ice packs on my neck. Im sure once everything is healed it will be worth it. But for anyone looking to get tonsils removed dont be discouraged but definitely be prepared it will be a miserable 2 weeks it definitely isn't a vacation from school or work..

    I’m so glad I had my tonsillectomy, my quality of life has improved tremendously. So I’ll start with that. I had mine out at 35, and it was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. That was even with alternating Vicodin and Percocet every three hours, 24 hours a day. I’ve had a lot of surgeries and generally don’t find recovery to be painful, so I often don’t even need to (and I don’t want to) take the prescription pain meds. However, with the tonsillectomy, I really needed them, and even then, I felt they almost didn’t touch the pain. In spite of this, I would definitely do it again.

    Clove oil - crushed clove powder and olive oil mixed with about 3 parts oil and 1 part clove with a q-tip stuck in it and rub it on the tongue or take a spoonful and let it numb the back of the mouth helped me. I’m 30yrs old and on my post-op Day 7. I’m still in excruciating pain and it’s unbearable. Yes it’s true they say you need around the clock pain medications. I’m taking acetaminophen 500mg every 6hrs and a breakthrough pain medication of ibuprofen 600mg every 6hrs. These medications usually wears off after 2.5-3hrs and I feel like I will be waiting and watching for the 3hr time period for my next dose of medication. This is the worst pain I ever felt. Worst than my hemorrhoidectomy. My husband bought me last night a Vicks cool mist Humidifier and it helps a lot. Drinking lots of fluids, ice chips, ice packs, icecream, cold water helps hydrate my throat. However, I usually take pain medication before having my meal. 30minutes or until the pain medication kicks in. Rice and vegetable soup are my favorite, mix them together and Enjoy. As long as it is soft and will still give you the nutrients you need.

    Had my tonsils taken out 5 days ago! The past 5 days have actually been ok! Pain is manageable since I have been staying on a routine with my meds! I was given t3s and was told to mix/rotate those with Advil! Which has been good for me. I had to cut back on the T3s as they started to make me extremely nauseous yesterday! My doctor also had given me steroids to take starting yesterday, and I took my last one today! Those were to help my swollen throat and they were actually super helpful. But..My throat started stinging/burning last night. It’s always the mornings and evening that are most painful for me! During the day it’s good and I can talk and feel human! I have eaten everyday. I’m trying to keep food in my system so I don’t end up feeling worse without having food in me! Day 1 I ate cold Mac and cheese, day 2 I had mashed potatoes and I mashed up a hamburger into mush so I could eat that as well, day 3 I had Mac and cheese and more mashed potatoes, day 4 I ate chicken noodle soup with soggy crackers and buttered bread, and today (day 5) I had some pancakes soaked in syrup. Also every day I’ve been having popsicles as well and frozen yogurt. LOTS LOTS of water. I can’t tell you how much water I’m drinking. I tried Gatorade but the flavours are so weird after the surgery I just prefer water over anything. I’m sure I still have a lot way to go! Hasn’t even been a week yet! I hope it stays manageable

    I’m currently experiencing this bad breath a lot. I’m brushing and flossing a lot. My ENT says it’s tonsillitis & surgery is on the table which I’ve booked for February but when I went to my Gp for a swab of my tonsils, the results showed no bacterial growth and was negative for tonsillitis. Not sure how to proceed. I’m going for a second opinion with another ENT next week. I’ve done all the other checks to rule out any other possible causes. Blood tests, swabs, seen 3 different dentists who all say teeth & gums are in excellent condition, even done a Gastroscopy to check if the bad breath is stomach based but everything else is perfectly normal. This has gone on for months now almost a year 😢 and has affected my quality of life. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

    @@misshcandy418 I think you should definitely get a second opinion from another ENT! One of the first signs of upcoming chronic tonsillitis is bad breath and tonsil stones but I can’t believe the first one didn’t check for anything else!!?? There’s also a size scale, 0, 1,2,3 and 4 which are the size of the tonsils. Usually people who have chronic tonsillitis or have had alooot of strep/ flu in the past have the larger tonsils and 4 means they’re touching or blocking breathing. Among like tons of other things your ENT should’ve probably checked for like if they’re cavernous that should’ve been one of the first. Please get it checked and treated before it gets worse if you can ☺️

    The worst constant pain ever 🥺... Omg. I'm a cancer survivor and I thought i would be okay. But it's been a week and I feel like the pain is getting worse. I can't take Motrin. And Tylenol is not enough, plus I can barely swallow anything even spit. It's so difficult to eat anything 😭 because of swallowing and the swelling in my throat. I have stopped breathing a few times because my Ulva is so swollen. Oh this is awful 😞😩. And I can't wait for it to end. I am sleeping as much as possible, I don't want to be up in pain. And let's not mention the "ear infection" like pain in my ears, and the "i just got my wisdom teeth" pain in my jaw. Oh excruciating geez... I know it's going to be better later, but ohhhh how i want to be there now. Today is day 7, and all I can do is cry 😢😭😭😭😭😭😭 and moan and groan 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨. I had mine removed at 42 and man it's been so hard. I was constant victim of tonsillitis and strep throat from the age of 9 years old. Then I grew up and got tonsil stones 🤢 yucky yuckky yuck yuck 🤢. To say the least. So this is kinda helping, typing this is taking my mind off it. But I am almost finished, now what will I do. I'm out of pain meds.... HeLLLP MEEEEE 😭😭😭😭😢🥺... • @GeneLiuMD

    @GeneLiuMD

    5 жыл бұрын

    Codeine has been used for post-tonsillectomy pain in the US for many decades. Usually it works just fine, but there are issues with it. Codeine is converted in our livers to Morphine - which is really the active form of the drug that gives you pain relief. In some people, this conversion doesn't happen all that well and they don't end up getting much Morphine. In others, the liver is "too good" at the conversion and they get a much higher dose of Morphine that intended. These people are called "hypermetabolizers". If you are a hypermetabolizer, you can get a super high does of Morphine...which increases the risk of side effects like nausea, grogginess, but also can result in an overdose. In the US, codeine has a "black box warning" by our Food and Drug Administration for children undergoing tonsillectomy. There is no black box warning for adults. Nor is there a warning for other types of procedures. Even so, given the unpredictable nature of the liver metabolism step, I don't like prescribing Codeine for anything. That having been said, it's been used for decades by many docs for many things. And usually there are no issues. PS - It has nothing to do with bleeding.

I am supposed to get the stints removed today, so hopefully I will be able to breathe a little better. I've had so much anxiety about going to sleep because I often get nauseous from the blood in thr post nasal drip and it has made me throw up a few times. If you're here this isn't what you want to hear but.... It's a dumpster fire. The going under part is actually awesome even though that's what most of us are afraid of. I'd straight up do that for recreation if they let me. Just recently had my tonsils, adenoids and uvula taken out as I only wanted to go through this only once. It's going to hurt like holy hell forever. The only part that doesn't is right after surgery and that's about it. Don't let anyone fool you. Nothing makes it easier. Buckle up and accept you'll be eating your pain killers like candy. And they don't actually stop the pain, just whack you out where you won't remember it. From day 3 on to about 2 weeks sucks absolute ass. Then after that it still sucks for another 2 weeks just not "as bad" *wink,wink* aannddd after that everything tastes gross or metallic for another 2-4 months after that. Good luck and r.i.p.

    It's day 5 for me. In the morning, I was in severe pain but after having done with my gargle the pain was reduced. To experience lesser pain you can do the following : 1. Gargle once after every 1.5hrs 2. Drink a half glass of water every hour. 3. Chew something or just pretend to chew 4. Take meds on time 5. Sleep well 6. Talk less Also, the level of pain depends on the method of surgery.

    You should check with your physician that's not normal, I mean the scabs coming off yes but not talking, pain in ears, head and mouth after 11 days could be an infection and if you haven't poop in 5+ days you should go to ER. Even it could be side effects of the oxycodone, you must go to your physician or ER.

    Hello Dr! I'm very curious, was referred to an ENT from my PCP and the ENT advised me i had a lot of tonsil stones and that even with antibiotics the stones will harbor bacteria and cause recurring infections over time and recommended they get taken out. Said I'd feel alot better without them. Said I wouldn't have any adenoid tissue at 29yrs of age. Stated he would prescribe tylenol with codeine and an antibiotic. Taken every 6hrs. I have surgery scheduled on the 23rd of December 2019 and I was curious on what you think of what I was advised? I worry now because of my age and the issues/pain i hear people going through. I scheduled an appointment with an allergist on the 17th and was curious to know if you think an allergists opinion could potentially help out versus me undergoing a tonsillectomy? It's just I've heard in some cases of people being allergic to certain things that could cause tonsil stones. Again that's just word of mouth not by anyone with a medical degree. Just curious to know your input on tonsil stones and if that ultimately is common and if surgery is truly needed? Just more scared for the upcoming week is all and would hope to hear back soon. Thank you!

    Hello Dr.Liu, I know you’re not my ENT. I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me? I’m desperate for any answers. It’s been one month since my tonsillectomy ( no complications with healing). I went off pain meds at 9 days ( advil). I started eating normally with no problems or issues. Food tasted fine up until I started forming a salty taste in my mouth. I was told by my ENT in Denver that would go away within a few weeks. It hasn’t gone away and spoke with my ENT’s nurse yesterday and explained my problems and she said it could take up to 8 weeks. My concern is and I expressed this to the nurse is, I started having no appetite or desire to eat anything 6 days ago ( today being the 6th day). I’m aware that the taste will go back to normal with time, but my concern is I don’t want to eat or have a desire to eat. Why would that happen all of a sudden? When I was eating and had my appetite back to normal 6 days ago? The nurse told me my ENT told her it might be a GI issue and to see my PCP. I haven’t come across anyone who experienced anything like this after a tonsillectomy. It’s very concerning. I haven’t been able to get in with my PCP and will have to go to an urgent care. I have a trip to California at the end of this month and I’m completely lost on what to do. Thank you!

    Sorry to hear that you are going through all of this. There are a few possible explanations that I can readily think of, and it won't be possible to know exactly what is going on with you. Without knowing more about the details and specifics around your surgery, your health history, and the examination of your tongue and mouth, I could only offer guesses. It is true that almost every reason that someone would have delayed taste issues are ones that are likely to improve with time.

    Dr. Liu, Thank you, for responding and trying to answer any questions I have. Spoke with my ENT today and was told that she doesn’t believe this is related to my tonsillectomy considering it happened a few weeks after the surgery. She said it is true there are taste disturbances but she never heard of people saying it being salty. With the lost of complete appetite and not eating with the rapid weight lost, I scheduled an appointment with a GI Doctor. I hope to figure out what’s going on and get the problem fixed. Thank you!
