a song styled after the 1950s, created and performed in the late 80s/early 90s, that i am watching in 2016, about a crew of a ship over 3 million years in the future.

Goodall wrote the music originally, like he writes all pieces of music on Red Dwarf, to be timeless (50s 60s) then Danny and the others took the song to a studio and re-recorded it with a 70s/80s disco feel

It's amazing that despite that, you can't tell when watching the show. I remember listening to the commentaries and Craig saying about how in season two I think it was, when Chris does an impression of Lister it really irked him. I think the only time you can tell is if you watch the behind the scenes stuff from back then, like the smeg up's. You could tell Craig, Robert & Danny got on more socially.
This would probably win the Eurovision Song Contest.

It's so strange to know none of these guys were actors before this show. Rimmer was an impressionist, cat was a singer/dancer, Holly and kryten were comedians and lister was a poet.

Cat/DJJ was an actor, but also singer/dancer, he trained for all the and was in West End theatre (the London equivalent of NYC's Broadway) and some other acting jobs, including the film Scum with Ray Winston, before doing Red Dwarf. RLL had done other acting stuff too, but I don't know if he had any professional training, I think it was more fringe theatre and comedy stuff. Still though, impressive group of people that did wonderful things together! :)

Yeah the Cat watches this on the dream recorder whilst trying to find a dream about 'himself, 3 girls and a jacuzzi sized tub of vanilla yoghurt' if I remember correctly
two things: first, I love how they sneak a part of the Red Dwarf theme into 1:38. Second, here's a fun bit of trivia: Danny John-Jules who is the actor that plays Cat used to be a dancer before he took on the role of Cat. In fact most of the cast had no prior acting experience apart from Chris Barrie (Arnold Rimmer) who was an impressionist, and Norman Lovett (Holly) who was an actor. Craig Charles (Dave Lister) was a poet, Robert Llewellyn (Kryten, series III onwards) was a comedian.
