Tongue level or Tongue-Controlled Embouchure? Why not both?

Some folks worry that the very forward someone aggressive sound of the TCE embouchure might be too much. So, can you switch back and forth?

Thank you for your videos. I've actually found them more helpful in explaining TCE clearly than nearly all the other videos out there on the subject. As for the current video it addresses a question I had been wondering about myself. It does seem to me that TCE, though a powerful tool when done correctly, does have limitations. It tends to produce a thick vocalized sound (e.g. like Harry James in 'You Made Me Love You' -and I'm not saying he used TCE himself for sure though he can be seen pushing his tongue forward before playing in many videos). Few players see able to tame it and produce the kind of clear transparent non-vocalized sound of legendary classical Principal trumpeters such a Bud Herseth or Maurice Murphy. Also for certain players (think its most vocal current advocate) the articulation often sounds thick and unpleasant as does the sound. For that reason it seems limited so why not have a range of tools in the arsenal? Also I remain unconvinced that the super small double cup mouthpieces favoured by most advocates can get a warm enough sound for some kinds of playing. An idiomatic sounding cornet sound is very hard on a double cup and I have tried. The assertions to the contrary don't convince me. I regularly watch a certain very vocal advocate assert that all these things are possible only to inadvertently demonstrate the opposite as a horrible strangulated noise comes out of the end of his horn. I have used the term vocalized here but I'm perfectly aware that its an unsatisfactory term because the sounds of Harry James, Miles Davis and a Victorian cornet soloist playing a bel canto ballad could also be described as vocalized yet they are as different from each other as they are from a classic symphonic sound. Anyway apologies for rambling on a bit and thanks again for posting.

I think you make some fair points, and I agree with your assertion re: the shallow mouthpieces. I can say that TCE being more efficient, I CAN USE a smaller diameter and cup without sacrificing tone. The diameter I can go WAY smaller with no ill effects - the cup size, I can only go down 1, maybe 2 cup sizes, without the tone changing too much. TCE does provide a focused, clear, articulate tone, which in MANY cases, maybe even most, I'm finding preferable to the traditional methods...

Rich Colqahoun says a lot the same and have a more smooth articulation than fx Ralph Salamone. Both are able to do a lot! I was starting to learn TCE but it takes time AND you need a shallow cup..SHALLOW! I play Curry 8.5 Star...fair suitable. Thanks for info over all in your videos 🎺🎺

Rich's videos have been a big help to me, too. I even took a lesson with him to clear up a few thoughts I had. Good dude!

Are you able to flutter tongue? If so is it throughout the whole range?

Yes, but to do that effect, you pull the tongue back, like in traditional playing.

@@trumpetthoughts thanks for the response! How do you control the notes if you don't use your tongue in the normal tce way? Also is there an impact on your tone? Is it possible to flutter tongue through the whole range when you play?

@@isaacwardmusic If I'm not using TCE, then I'm using the tongue level method as described by Claude Gordon. The tone does change, and you can flutter through your entire range (well, fluttering is hard in the extreme upper register). There is a change in the tone, but it's not important for this temporary sound effect. It definitely isn't a reason to NOT use TCE. I mean, how much flutter tonguing are you doing, anyway??? 🤣🤣🤣
