I heard her say in one of her interviews that she wrote this song when she went to one of those Hollywood parties where there were a number of famous people there and she and her friend felt so out of place even thought they were coming up and talking to her. She felt so uncomfortable they went back to their hotel room and binged on room service and tv. All her songs are about being marginalised.

Appreciating how Tones played all these characters so well!! Hits each character with just the right amount of overplay but spot on for each one. This over 70 is enjoying not just Tones's lyrics, music and musical arrangements, but her videos as well. Very clever and very talented. Let's all remember that this song is from someone who was busking for a living less than a year from the start of her tour around the world that was cancelled because of Covid. Imagine being a busker who has a no 1 hit not just in your own country but also in 35 other countries, and the No. 1 song worldwide in 2019. That would be hard for anybody to assimilate. To go from hanging out with your friends straight to award gigs and touring overseas constantly in different places, interviews, TV shows, concerts etc where you're constantly meeting new people but away from your friends for several months. That's tough. And this song is spot on.

How insanely relatable. I walked away from a group just like this, but it took me years to find out how toxic they were. They benefited from me, but what did they ever do for me than make me feel like this song.

Love how you can party to all her songs but they all also have a deeper meaning ❤️

I love how much this video emphasizes how everyone is trying so hard to get famous in any way possible. We are all more "connected" than ever, but have never been more depressed and lonely. People think popularity and acting cool will give them more relationships, but it puts us in a cycle of low-self esteem and attention-seeking to "fix it." I love how she has all these different types of vloggers that later keep spilling their different crap on her too. All the mannequins are just replicas of each other with the same fashion, so the only people moving are the vloggers trying to be the "most unique" people there, but going over the top to be seen and heard.

I'm 45 and this is my favorite young artist. She reminds me of something very essential and primal--about youth, but even if it survives youth, which is the real bottleneck, it gets even harder to keep it alive as the sorrow of life piles up: Keeping your soul and your identity intact. Protecting the voice in your head that keeps reminding you to separate reality from social reality, gaslighting, abuse, mass hysteria, politics, history, madness: It sounds so silly, but to be a functional adult, the very first thing you have to master in being a whole person is ignoring the cool kids. Because they're going to grow up to be the ultra-uncool, the corrupt and the powerful, the abusive and the cruel. If you join them or hide from them, you're not going to have much of an inner life, no matter how much money they help you pile up. Adults who are forgetful mock this shit, not knowing that they either lost the battle long ago, or that they're about to lose it now.

I remember being 13-14, after the death of the one adult I trusted and looked forward to seeing; getting to hang out with my aunt was kind of all I was living for in junior high (to a lesser extent, seeing my cousins). She was in the Air Force (cooooool) so she moved around a lot and sightings were rare; the scarcity of my chances to see her was probably part of how it kept me going. She and her baby were smashed in a random car crash. A few months later, I was looking at the tile floor in my high school and suddenly despite my undiagnosed visual condition, the tile pattern came into focus and I realized with amazement, and a certain amount of pride, that I WAS STILL THERE. I don't mean I was just alive, I meant that I recognized myself, the voice in my head. Losing that one person I had to look forward to seeing seemed like it should have made me into a different person. Like on TV, where something bad happens to a character, and then suddenly they turn from being a totally good person into someone who does things that are inexplicably bad--but you shouldn't really think they're a bad person, because they've GONE CRAZY, life has just snuffed out their essence, but the good person is still under there struggling somehow. Except... that's not how it really works. Not for me. I hadn't changed, in my essence, I could still feel myself there. Hear myself there. (Which is when I should have realized that most character development is shit, but I hadn't really learned how to write well enough at that point for that to even make sense.) I was relieved and more proud than I should have been, considering how far I still had to go to survive it all (not done yet, actually). But maybe that small bit of pride helped me through.
