tomorrow and Tomorrow is divine || Final Fantasy XIV

Ойындар

To be honest, I can't remember hearing this in game. I think this may be the first time I've actually sat down to listen to Tomorrow and tomorrow but my goodness it is...sublime. ‪@Amandaachen_official‬ knocks it out of the park as always and I think the lyrics themselves are just so beautiful. Another one of Final Fantasy XIV's beautiful tracks.

Awwww Marco, I was cheesing throughout your analysis. 😊 I’m honored to hear a fellow well-trained singer - with an ear such as you have - reacting to a song that I sing. You’re absolutely right that I think about harmonizing my vowel shape - ESPECIALLY in high notes. It’s so integrated into my technique now, thank GOD 😅 (moreso than at the time of recording even). That kind of vowel shape harmonization is what lends to balance throughout the range, gives that nice chiaro-scuro (a blend of light and dark qualities) so sought after in classical singing, and just overall makes singing feel more effortless - which in turn helps support that shimmery vibrato you’re talking about! (Yes I did do musical theatre too, so it’s fun to pull and pick and choose from different aesthetics to make my own style!) I know Marco knows these techniques as a fellow classically trained singer, and I wanted to go in depth and explain a little for the readers in the comments here! Btw guys, I *am* planning on recording a Singing Technique 101 module - “Masterclass” style - this year, so if that interests you, follow me here and keep your eyes on my socials! 🎉 Thanks again Marco, for your beautiful and expert analysis! ❤

"Yours is a long road, my friend, and it stretches on to places beyond imagining. With your every step, these grand adventures shall grow more distant and faint. And there may come a day when you forget the faces and voices of those you have met along the way. On that day, I bid you remember this… That no matter how far your journey may take you, you stand where you stand by virtue of the road you walked to get there. For in times of hardship, when you fear you cannot go on… The joy you have known, the pain you have felt, the prayers you have whispered and answered - they shall ever be your strength and your comfort. This I hope - I believe, here at memory’s end."

Something that always strikes me about Tomorrow and Tomorrow is the lyrical changes between the first and second choruses. In the first chorus, we hear "May all of the dark lost inside you find light again"; in the second, it becomes "May all of the dark deep inside you". Later, we hear "In time, tumbling, turning, we seek amends", as opposed to "This time, tumbling, turning, we make amends". If we assume the choruses are sung from the same perspective, it paints this lovely picture of not just self-acceptance-no longer being lost, even when in darkness-but also reclamation and action-no longer waiting for what's right to someday come to you, but going out and _making_ right, _now._ I just really love it.

It is very much the ethos of G'raha and the Crystal Tower - to find the light, to find salvation and reconciliation. To find hope everlasting by continuing to believe in something better. "The glory of the heavens was ever beyond the grasp of those who never thought to reach for it. But if I’ve gained anything from all of this, it is the courage to stretch out my hand."

The song appears after you defeat the final boss at Holminster Switch, where you absorb the first light warden's light, break the everlasting day and bring darkness to Lakeland & Crystarium. I remembered this so well is because this was the scene that hooked me into this game, this is THE most protagonist moment among all of the games I played.

My favorite song of the whole game, You FEEL the weight of this song. The weight on Emet selch duty, the weight on the Warrior of Light fights. It is where our character hit the deepest low, even lower than the start of Heavensward. It is also where we understood *WHY* we fight, hence the uplifting second part. Truly, truly a gorgeous song.

I know the song isn't about him, but the lyrics match Emet Selch almost perfectly - especially in the context of Endwalker. When I think about it like that I imagine it as Hydaelyn's lament for, and to, Emet Selch and the choices he made.

To me it fits both Emet-Selch and Graha. They are both people who will carry every burden and never give up on their people. The only difference is that one holds on to the future while the other holds to the past.

Im pretty sure since it is the base of the entire expansion it refers to both the ascians and WoL as well as G’raha. The whole expansion is a dichotomy, both being right from their respectives. It’s like It has to be this way in MGR:R

  • @Shikujiru

I think it's about anyone whose themes match this feeling of desperation to change the future and laments the past. G'raha coming into this mourns the loss of his hero and the near death of his star. He and the people of his star are desperate enough to send someone into the past, a past that cannot change for them, to spare some version of their star in history from suffering the same fate. Emet, of course, is desperate to undo the deaths of his comrades and his people after the crushing weight of the decisions in the wake of the final days. His determination puts him in direct conflict not only with the people of today, but the people of tomorrow in G'raha. "Who fights? Who flies? Who falls?" Then you have a reference to both there are the end, plus one for the warrior of light first: From those who've fallen to those who arise (WoL) A prayer to keep us ever by your side An undying promise that we just might Carry on in a song Pray don't forget us, your bygone kin (Emet) With one world's end does a new begin And should our soul scatter onto the wind Still we shall live on Stand tall my friend (G'raha) May all of the dark deep inside you find light again This time, tumbling, turning we make amends Eternal winds from the land ascend Here to lift us that we won't end

@@seancotter9639 I was told (during my playthrough of Shadowbringers MSQ - before the patches), that officially the song was about G'raha, the state of the First and its people, and Ardbert/the Warriors of Darkness who fell for the Ascians temptations, which I assumed to be the case until Amaurot and the fight in the Dying Gasp. When it played after that I realised that the lyrics also referred to Emet Selch as well, but I was still being told that the "official interpretation" was what I'd been told. I wouldn't put it past Soken for adding multiple layered meanings to a song, especially one named after the "Tomorrow and tomorrow, and tomorrow" speech from Macbeth.

Was looking for someone else to catch that. FF3 music is used all throughout the Crystal Tower raids, of course, but Eternal Winds is the most direct callback. G'raha Tia's character was inspired by the character of Dresh, who was also associated with the Crystal Tower in FF3 (similar story arc - inherited the ability to control the tower from his father, jumped into it and left the part for a large part of the game, then made a surprise return later on. That's why a lot of us weren't shocked when Crystal Exarch was G'raha. Aside from it being very, very, very obvious haha.)

What I love about this song is that there is a progression to it that I can only sum up as "healing." The opening portion has an underlying tension and even a pessimism to it. When we break out of that, the next portion is far lighter, airy, and upbeat, but I still feel it comes off as just slightly reserved. It almost retains just a little of that inherent cynicism that the song opened with. When we get to "From those who've fallen..." it comes of as so reflective, very light once again but building into something brighter and more positive. Once we finally break into "Stand tall, my friend" with the full, developed instrumental section behind it, the piece feels like someone who has transitioned from simply trying to persevere and trying to be hopeful to someone actually having optimism and a love of life again. It's revitalizing, and seems to mark a genuine feeling of healing from a very bleak place.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow... Where do I even start... Most people have already mentioned this song bringing them to tears, helping them through awful times, and listening to it repeatedly: all of which I am a club member. Something about this song when I first encountered it in-game made me just sit with it and stare. I forgot about the quest, I forgot about my goals, I just stood there, listening. I felt like the song was talking to me, about me, encouraging me, during a time I was at my lowest, and felt like my existence was worth less than the resources it took to extend it. I'd fought with and deeply hurt my closest friend of more than a decade, caused a schism in my friend group, shunned by my SO at the time, disconnected from my family (for better and for worse), jobless, hopeless, and a step away from being homeless. I went from being an [allegedly] perfectly capable human being, to being broken in ways I may never recover from. Something about that song.... it acknowledges my sins, while still believing in me, seeing me for who I am, and that I can still grow to be even more robust than what was expected of me beforehand. The song convinced me that I am still yet capable of paving my tomorrow with the love, resilience, and hope that I have upheld inside myself, despite [or maybe because of!] how far I had fallen. The moment I earned the Orchestrion track, it became the theme of my room in the FreeCompany. It gives me peace, it gives me hope, it both calms my nerves AND galvanizes them. I haven't been on for a couple years now, because that's how long I couldn't afford it, but this piece stays in my Spotify playlists. It brings up bygone days both in and out of game, and helps me remember what I'm always working toward: a better me, a loving community, a better world, even if I'm the only part of the world I can change, THAT COUNTS. THAT IS ENOUGH. I've gotten a bit emotional, so I'm gonna cut it here. ✌🏿🫶🏿

From the 7:50-ish prompt. While you hear a hopefulness, I hear something far more nuanced, that makes way *for* the hopefulness you speak of. While you're left with hope at the end, the beginning is a wonderful address, and at 5:40 starts the idea of "forgiveness", or a "pardon", reinforcing the ideas that you'll see subtly mixed throughout all of Shadowbringers. Now that I actually have an opportunity to see the lyrics, and take a moment to dissect it without everyone and their distant cousin hyping it up, there are so many well-done elements, and Amanda does a stellar job. It may go a tad far to call it a crowning achievement for her, but it isn't much of a stretch. Thank you, Marco, for this prompt. Mayhap someday, my relatively amateur writing talents can extend into music.

I love the bridge part especially cause it can both be read as a plea for g'raha's journey trying to undo the eight calamity - as if coming straight from those that would be, ultimately, undone by his actions, the world that never will be and those who survived it - and the ancients, both thanking and relieving Emet of his duty towards them in a sense. There's a lot going on in game right there, and shadowbringers is truly a piece of art both in narrative, music and visuals, and I'm so so happy to see you come back to some ffxiv commentary from time to time :D

After Answers and the lyrics of Dragonsong, people came to say that Susan Calloway was essentially representative of the voice of Hydaelyn. Answers was Hydaelyn singing. Dragonsong was Hydaelyn singing having looked on the Dragonsong War (and remember, Ysayle had the echo - Hydaelyn spoke to her and set her on her path). Same thing with Revolutions being Hydaelyn seeing the weight of war in Eorzea. Now with Shadowbringers, they changed singers here. We have Amanda Achen singing Tomorrow and Tomorrow as well as Flow in Endwalker. I see this as a continuation of what the community saw in Susan's songs, but Amy is not Hydaelyn. Her vocals represent Venat.

I know where this song plays in FFXIV specifically because it plays just after beating down Hades in what is essentially the first half of Shadowbringers. A hole blown through gut by the Warrior of Light's final attack, he stands there, pulls down his hood, and with a somber look, says," "Remember us. Remember...that we once lived." After the player response, Hades fades away,...and Tomorrow and Tomorrow begins to play. As the song plays, the Scions take stock of the situation, addressing the WoL's condition following the battle with a sigh of relief...and the Crystal Exarch, unmasked in more ways the one, meekly exits the shadows. The WoL greets with a smile, and as the Scions all move to depart from the battleground, the tune changes to Eternal Wind. ...Now, aside from the credits, I can't think of any other time during Shadowbringers where Tomorrow and Tomorrow plays, but the song has stayed with me, even today, in a time where I haven't even played it in months. I knw that the Crystarium's day and night themes are essentially different renditions of Tomorrow and Tomorrow, so it's basically is one of the expansion's liet motifs. A pledge by the Scions, and especially the Crystal Exarch, to always stay by the side of the WoL. Conversely, it can also represent Emet-Selch's and Elidibus' bond with each other, the Convocation of Thirteen, and the world and people they have long since lost. "May all the dark deep inside you find light again. This time, tumbling, turning, we make amends. Eternal winds from the land ascend. Here to lift us the we won't end." Just these four lines, by themselves, make multiple callbacks and references to a number of things in the game's story. "May all the deep inside you find light again" can refer to both Emet-Selch and the WoL, currently the Warrior of Darkness to the First, as they are both, in their own ways, Shadowbringers. The "Tumbling, turning" bit is also a reference to the main theme of the expansion, also called "Shadowbringers", which also makes multiple uses of these words. "Eternal winds" can very easily be a reference to Graha'Tia, as his character theme is "Eternal Winds", but it can also be a reference to the Ancients that Emet-Selch lost, propelling him onward to his ultimate goal. "Here to lift us that we won't end." Neither the WoL nor Emet-Selch want their worlds to be pruned away, to end, and so are lifted by their respective winds. Graha was instrumental in WoL's victory, but Emet just won't those he lost be ultimately lost or forgotten. And as whole, the song speaks of a long and arduous journey, full of loss and pain, with loved ones, companions, offering succor and comfort as they promise to continue their journey alongside their friend. It really is a beautiful piece.

Touching on what you ask 7:42 It is all about hope, because looking back at SB as a whole, everything was always just horrifically bad, and then (naturally) you rally the troops and save the day, even while hitting speedbumps, and thinking you might lose. Such a good story that they fleshed out

it took me until another creator's video on the song to realize, but people really leave out the Warriors of Darkness when they talk about who this song is directed to; or at least as i see it, most of the expansion vocal tracks are hydaelyn speaking to some of the major characters, and the lyrics feel just as much saying 'whoops, sorry, new guy has it though' to poor ardbert and his party as they do to hades

"Eternal Winds" mentionned in the lyrics is not the theme of Crystarium but a Shadowbringers character's theme (not telling who just in case but you get it) and we can hear it when 5.0 Shadowbringers credits roll or at the end of Crystal Tower quests when the doors closes. It is also taken directly from Final Fantasy 3 which is it's main theme and also where all the Crystal Tower and all it's references (bosses, characters, music, etc...) is from !

The ingame music gave me the decisive push towards registering a trial account which later got upgraded, ofcourse. I also kind of am a sucker for classical trained singers, very pleasant to listen to (I just can't listen to present "musical trends", I even go to Post Modern Jukebox because I find some of their covers way better than the originals). Having Marco going through some small details in singing techniques just makes me appreciate artists like her even more. I sometimes find myself doing some Ravana karaoke and I'm not a trained singer AT ALL but it's a good way to understand what it takes to get there.

Hi Marco, could you compare 2 versions of a song in Doom and Doom Eternal. BFG Division by Mick Gordon You Can't Just Shoot a Hole into the Surface of Mars by Chad Mossholder There was a huge dispute over the making of Doom Eternal OST, and the final product contains mixes of Mick's audio files by Mossholder. You can read more in a Medium article that Mick posted about it like a year or more ago.

her high notes sound really strained. She is absolutely not an opera singer. She's not a musical theatre singer either because she can't mix.She either sings in full chest or a light but constrained head voice and the flips are so obvious and make her sound like she's struggling.
