There's a nice touch here, Tommy shows how much he knows about Alfie telling him that he knows he keeps a gun in the drawer (Alfe has been making a show of checking the drawer) later Alfie says intelligence is valuable but it usually comes far too late...then pulls the pistol from the other side of desk, showing Tommy that he doesnt know half as much as he thinks he does.

The bottom line for me is that Alfie could've just shot him and that's the end of Shelby, meaning he's not as "intelligent" but realistic. Yes, he would've had to deal with the consequences but Tommy would've still been dead. Two collosal threats in one room.

I saw a reddit/youtube comment a while back saying Tommy's nosebleed saved his life. It wasn't in the script and was added later by Cilian. Alfie describes his "biblical" form of stigmata where he hammers a nail through an Italian's nose. They were there to discuss an alliance against the Italians. He took the nosebleed as a good omen that they would defeat their enemies.

The scenes between Tommy and Alfie are scenes that have a place among the best scenes in television and cinema. 2 of the best actors of their generation.
One of the best additions to the cast. Tom Hardy absolutely nailed that role.

There's always something of the old air of mischief about Alfie around Tommy. He always seems to have just enough awe for Tommy to take the piss out of him a little bit, but he's a sensible and useful enough businessman that Tommy respects him enough to tolerate his cheekiness. This show has great character dynamics.

@OngoGablogian185
Жыл бұрын
It was a great scene but a bit poor regarding accuracy. The grenade was no risk and Alfie being a WW1 vet would have known that. It was on a trip wire - meaning he could have just shot Tommy and taken the wire off. it can't go off until the fly-off lever is released. So you can literally pick it up and tape the handle back down, even with the pin gone. The guy was outside the front door and wouldn't have seen a thing.
@darthchilde8880

@@darthchilde8880 of course you know where the wire is - it's tied to the grenade. The point was that the guy outside pulls on the wire, which pulls the fly-off lever and the grenade detonates. The fact that they don't have much time means that it's all the more likely in real life that he'd just shoot Tommy and walk straight over to the grenade. Thankfully, he doesn't obviously want to kill him as that would kinda ruin the story.

The strangest thing about this scene is that Alfie says he performed the form of stigmata on an Italian, however the Italians were on the Allied side during WW1, which would lead to believe that he was fighting for the Central Powers under Austria/Hungary... Unless it was an Italian who ended up on a different side than Italy, but I don't think it's ever explicitly mentioned which side Alfie actually fought for

@@arthurthedragon1012 also completely plausible and defo fits his character, however there would need to be a rando Italian there, as Italians would've been fighting in the Alps, (Some of the worst fighting of the war there tbh, people starting avalanches to bury the enemy) whereas the UK didn't touch that theater and were mostly along the French/Belgian corridor, could be an oversight but the showrunners were excellent at covering the history, so I'm doubtful I do think Alfie's hardened attitude and slight unhingedness could even be attributed to what he saw in the Alps, if it is the case
@jonathanweaver5310

The Italians were initially on the side of the Central Powers, but the Triple Entente promised them parts of Austria-Hungary that they desired and had claims to, so they switched sides. Part of way the meme for Italians always backstabbing comes from. The other half, of course, being the Italian surrender in 1943 and turning against the Germans (Somewhat)
@haha2134
Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanweaver5310 Yes... This is exactly my point, they were on the ALLIED side, Britain was also on the ALLIED side, hence Alfie would have to be fighting for the Central powers to fight an Italian. They never joined the war under the Central powers, nor fought the allies at any point, the treaty was with Germany and it was purely defensive, hence why the Italians never joined. It came down to disputes over regions in the Trent Valley which the allies were willing to concede (Which the Italians were upset about after the war, as they felt they earned more from the brutal stalemate in the alps, hence the shift to facism and subsequent switch of sides again, which adds to the meme)
