Lol same. One of my first games. Recently finished them all one by one after playing again after many years. Just this year I found out that in TR Chronicles you could get down from a crouching position just rolling forward by pressing a combination of keys (and you can even equip your guns in the air then) and that you can get a different version of 2nd level in The Last Revelation if you get all secrets in level 1. And only now I found out you can do flips like that.

The ragdoll mechanic in Anniversary is ridiculous sometimes. I laughed when I swan dived into protruding swords and Lara just flew across the room. 😭

A S i like the ragdoll animation in Rise of the Tomb Raider.. I was just messing around and i was spamming the climb button and idk why but i suddenly went inside the rock wall where you climb and Lara screamed a falling scream 3 or 4 times and then she teleported TO THE TOP and died and after she fell she flew across the mountain aswell omg

I still kind of miss the “death😩” noises she used to make in the original trilogy when it was in a long fall. They knew exactly what they were doing with those sound effects and I remember Duke Nukem: Time To Kill making fun of her death voices

The death animation is actually prettier in the first 3 titles than the most recent ones! Ragdoll don't always deliver the best outcome.

I liked the old ones. It was horrific & you knew the adventure is over. The ragdolls are too comical. I don't want a Tomb Raider game to ever feel silly or funny

And for the OP, it is odd, I never got Tomb Raider on my feed before, I haven't even googled that in a couple of years ago (I used to play the PS1 game, but that was all, well, maybe the NDS one too) KZread seems to randomly select content now.

It says a lot about the gaming industry that the actual impacts in the earlier games look more realistic than then shoddy rag doll effects they use now.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider I was doing swan dives into the lava on the forge mission for Abigail.

The animation for the PS1 games was sublime. So graceful, balletic and confident. I don't know why they changed it.

Smashing into the ground is one of the things where the lack of ragdoll physics makes it way more impactful. It just carries across how you'd be a squashed tomato after falling from great heights, rather than a bouncy rubber ball.

Great video! A little shocked to see that even the swan dive is worse in the newer games. Wow.

I could be mistaken but I think that they started to remove her gruesome deaths in the ps2 era because it was seen as "too violent". As a result, she does a bad ragdoll as opposed to the crunch that we heard in the original PS1 games.

The old tomb raider games look fun as hell

Some incredible places to swan die from.

I remember when I first to discovered how to do a swan dive by accident when I was kid, playing the tutorial level in TR2. I just sat into stunned silence for a couple seconds, then burst out laughing. I didn't even know what a swan dive looked like, yet instinctively, I knew what to call it. Fun times.

It's cool that back in 1996 the developers had the detail of implementing those two little useless tricks, the handstand and the swan dive.

I always love the open world feels of TR

Ah the 90's, when you could show a far more brutally honest (if graphically outdated) death in video games because sensibilities weren't so easily offended. Honestly the first Playstation games are just so much more impactful then the modern gen's ridiculous ragdolling. The crunch, the twisted neck, the broken body... Makes me shudder.

....Ok! I've been playing these games since they first came out in '96 and yet I was today years old when I realised that Lara did a fancy flip when you do a high Swan Dive.

It's 2021 and I just figured it out that this mid-jumping animation 0:11 was a thing. Thanks video.
