@@jakobzane6406 There is a difference between "you have to think about it" and bad level / puzzle design with logical jumps that any normal person wouldn't do without trial and error. The hardest Tomb Raider game of them all. A game so cruel and psychopathically uncaring that it doesn't just want to stop you from progressing through its story, but it actually wants to kill you in real life as well. If it could somehow manipulate your hands into jamming the sticks of your controller into your eyeballs, it would only be too happy to do so.

Ah, the olden days, when devs put a 3 in the title and were like: "You've played the previous ones, you should have the hang of this by now. You won't mind if we decide to be a little bit sadistic, right?" - and just went balls deep with the difficulty.

  • @ratsofftoya

The best thing about this game for me is the horror atmosphere it's developed. Something about it seems.. macabre to say the least. You got floating bodies posed like they were crucified with big gaping bloody holes in their chests, a group of deformed people hiding in the metros of London after being subjected to horrible medical tests, Area 51 with disected alien bodies, a group of wounded soldiers trying to hold back a cannibalistic tribe and dinosaurs, and last but not least the entire Antarctica chapter taking inspiration from John Carpenter's The Thing with the horribly mutated body horror scientists and end boss, and H.P. Lovecraft with a whole cursed ancient lost city in Antarctica. The lighting system and the late 90s game design and low poly graphics add on the horror even more. I love the series immensley, but I've always thought it could've used more horror elements like the Antarctica levels and the Atlantean levels of TR1, what with the walls and floors being covered in pulsing veins and organs and the sound of a heart beating in the background.

so a couple of comments, first, in the Lost city of Tannos, there's a clue for the fire pillars .. there's a small minimap on the roof, that highlights the right path if you light a flare just under it. Regarding the maze, you need to stop at every corner and see in which direcion Lara hair blows, since it's the air puzzle. Also, if you find all secrets, there's an extra level that you missed !

This was the only classic tomb raider (and tr in general) that I did not complete as a kid (came close). IT WAS HARD AF! I finally beat it on PC last year with the aid of walkthroughs and the fact that you can save whenever on PC. This game was good, but the challenge level was unfair at times. This is HANDS DOWN the best and most accurate review I ever saw on YT. I sign under EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. First I played TR2 since I remember I enjoyed most in 1997 when I was 21 years old. Now at 45, with "more brains", better skill and computer I decided to go again on the memory lane. TR2 was very enjoyable - especially Venice levels ( maybe because in RL i live 2h car drive away:). Then I went to TR3 since I don't remember I played back than or at least if I played it I remember London stages was quite cool. I went through the rough way - with no help on internet and guides. I played it for fu*** 3 months. And than after 2 fuc*** weeks I gave up. In the kayak level. Where you fuc** can row upstream. REALLY. FUC** REALLY:). I did manage to the end though. Mainly because of great music score and cool jazzy effects. And my almost 4 year old son who brags every afternoon to play with me. All in all - It wasn't that bad and if after 3 or 4 months after I finished it gave me some kind of feel good achievement. Would I play it again?? FUC* NO. (or maybe in next 24 years when I will be 69:)

There's a boiler room to shut off the flame leading down to the water treatment area, which can only be opened via key found in the tall atrium room found at the beginning of the level, down the hall. Several secrets will certainly be overlooked, either from sheer difficulty, or having absolutely no clue to point the player out where they're at. The first time I played, I completely avoided the flame shutoff room too, as just getting the key and getting to the room is a HUGE diversion from the path, completely ruining the level's flow, ironically.

some of the puzzles have clues, but others don't. There is a bit of an inconsistency there. For example the fire platforms in Lost City of Tinnos have a block that maps out the safe platforms if you light a flare. The London levels were just so goddamned long though. Lud's Gate broke me a bit.

Awesome, informative, review (only watched to place I'm currently at so no spoilers). The PSX version of the game is even more brutal as it only gives you limited number of save crystals. Question I had...Let's say I'm in level 4 in India, if I go back to Level 1 (Jungle) so that I can get the shotgun and then use a save crystal to save, will all my progress be wiped out? It's weird, when I'm in Level 4, I have at least 6 health packs, but when I play level 1, it appears to start off w/ zero, so I'm afraid if I save, I might have the shotgun but either (1) lose all my progress so far, meaning I'll be back to level 1, or (2) not lose my game progress, but lose the med kits, flares, etc. Didn't know if you might know. Thanks in advance!

What version are you playing? On the past, while i was using the PC version i remember trying again one of the first maps for collect items and then i lost my progress... so, i think you can lost everything. It's weird because you can actually select maps when you load your game saved. Right now i'm using the original ps1 version, i will check it out if this happens...

Fav is real close between Anniversary and Underworld. Legend will always be that moment when TR was finally fun to play on its own. When Lara stopped being clunky. Def has its pacing issues tho. It's no secret i hate the 2013 reboot with passion. It's the entire reason this series of reviews exists. I need the frame work to clearly explain why it's trash. The Game Statistic I'm a hardcore TR fan. I've been one since the very first one from 1996. So needless to say that I love the "original" Lara Croft and classic games. But for some reason I still enjoy TR 2013. As an action game it is fun and exciting, but as a TR game is really, really disappointing. I will watch the video in link later. Thx for sharing! Well, personally, I love Aldwych; but the entire game is unnecessarily difficult and I've never managed to complete it without consulting a walkthrough at times. For me the London levels are fun because I like London but, moreover, there's something weirdly exciting about Lara exploring such a 'normal' place, but in a way that makes it surreal. I've always enjoyed scenarios when ordinary places are changed, such as rooms filling up with water etc.

If you're going with the PS1 version of TR3 it would be best played on an emulator. I think even it's superior to the PC build when you factor in being able to fast forward the game during the annoying climbing, monkey bar, crawling, and block pushing segments. Save states negate the terrible save system on the PS1 as well. Don't be ashamed to use a guide, this game is downright cryptic at parts especially in London. Good luck because the game's notoriously difficult.

I totally agree. I'm currently in Antarctica with my first playthrough...if I can call it that. Very early on, I wimped out and used a walkthrough. At Area 51, I had to backtrack that many times because of horrendous insta-kills. It got to the point where I was that tired that I put the all weapons and saves cheat in too for fear of having to go back and do the same segment for the twentieth time. I promised myself I would play through all of the games, one after the other. I will not be revisiting this one. 😑

I know all 3 of the OG TRs by heart and TR3 is by far my favorite to replay. The levels are far more interesting, varied, and challenging than anything in the first 2 games. The design choices that make TR1 and 2 much better first playthrough experiences actually make them much less interesting to replay, since they're just not that interesting once you know what to do. TR3 still packs a good challenge even when you know the level layouts, traps and enemy placements by heart. I really, really like the new game plus mode for TR3 in the new remastered version (all weapons from start, no med packs, tougher enemies, crystals are the only way to save and heal). It rewards you for being careful and seeing how many tricky sections you can make it through before saving.

I never connected to the game. While TR1 was mindblowing, TR2 was a polished, bigger and better version of TR1, TR4 had the best story and well thought and designed locations and TR5, at least in retrospective, was the farewell of the classics, TR3 feels to me like its just there. I dont really like the places she goes (except of india) and the sometimes ridicolous amount of difficulty. Also I think the locations are way to modern. I felt exactly the same when i first bought it on its release date. Was so disappointed. Just felt very bland and uninspired, they made some great additions with the crawl and sprint mechanics in Lara, and added some awesome new guns, but level design is way more important than those minor things for a game that is built around map exploration and traversal, and they abandoned what made the first 2 games a pleasure to play, instead favouring for making it harder to figure wtf to even do.

Agree totally. I grew up in the 80's/90's, I was there Gandalf.. JK, but i missed the first Tomb Raider games release hype, and when i bought a PS1 about a year after everyone else had one, i got Tomb Raider 2 alongside the console as it looked like an interesting game. I loved every moment of it (maybe the moments on Living Quarters and The Deck a little less, but i digress). Eventually I played some of Tomb Raider 1 but after playing 2 before that, it felt like a jump back in quality, it started off great but i felt the levels were becoming a bit same same, and lacked variety compared to TR2. I bought Tomb Raider 3 on launch day and couldn't wait to play it. Man my disappointment, it just felt all off. Started with the Jungle level, the colours just seemed oversaturated yet uniformly bland, this horrible mix of greens and browns, nothing jumped off the screen to me like in TR2. I found no fun in the map design at all. I tried the London map, couldn't play beyond 10 minutes. I couple of times i went back to the Jungle map, and although the difficulty was frustrating, i feel that wasn't the only problem, it just didn't feel fun playing it and i think it's purely the map design isn't really about exploring but literally just getting lost and running around a messy jungle, i don't think it was a good choice for map design for the level of graphics we were at for its time. It's a shame because there's improvements, to Lara's design, the weapons, the sprint and crawl additions to Lara, but if the maps are subpar then all the other stuff is in vain.
