Tomb Raider III (1998) Playthrough (No Commentary)

Ойындар

Tomb Raider series: • Tomb Raider Series
For the London set of levels, I've upped the in-game gamma. Made all those flares I picked up worthless but stumbling around in the dark doesn't make for a good viewing experience.
This is the PC version using Peixoto's patch, which you download at your own risk. Your antivirus and Windows will throw a fit when you do. I won't tell you it's perfectly safe, because I don't know for sure. I'm using remastered and upscaled pre-rendered scenes produced by LeonDeka. I had issues getting them to play correctly in-game, so they were edited in. The inventory screen is also bugged, so I only open it to use key items.
I'm playing mostly one-handed with keyboard controls. Each level is presented as if it was done in one go. No deaths are shown.
There are quite a few (122) edits. Except for three instances of cutting off music in Lud's Gate, RX-Tech Mines and the subtitles I've done, none are notable and the vast majority should be fairly difficult to spot.
The cuts for those two levels are due to some tricky jumps and me not wanting to memorize more than 5 minutes ahead.
This isn't a 100% playthrough. I skip secrets to save time but I may occasionally go out of my way for ammo. My goal was to get through each level and the game quickly. That said... In India, I waste a few minutes picking up items. I did remember you lose your weapons in Nevada but didn't remember that you actually lost everything you've picked up. Weapons, ammo, medkits and flares. The baffling thing for me is that there are a ton of items littered throughout the first Nevada level, all of which will be immediately taken from you. Why punish the player for exploring your levels?
I decided not to redo the India levels as I was already behind schedule and it would only save a few minutes in total.
I opted to not include the individual level statistics this time around. The music that plays when you finish a level is a lot longer than what played in 2. The completion time will always be inaccurate anyway as I waited several seconds after loading saves for the health bar to fade away to better disguise the edits. I spent ~60 hours on this in addition to that.
I sequence break the following levels:
River Ganges - Skips a significant amount of the level. The controls for the quad bike suck.
High Security Compound - Skips a block "puzzle" and some back and forth to shut off a fire. Sprinting into the wall prevents you from being immolated when you fall down.
Crash Site - Skips an extended platforming sequence necessary to get up onto the plane.
Lost City of Tinnos - Very minor, just skips an enemy encounter.
There's no cutscene for finding the artifacts. It just dumps you into the next set of levels.

Swan dive off a cliff, Lara crunches into a pile of broken bones, and then you reward your savagery with a Jaffa Cake? 😂 I’m having flashbacks now. Tbf I’d only do that when I couldn’t figure out where to go and thought to myself “f**k this I’m putting on MGS or Resi Evil”

This game felt awesome back in the days but honestly it was impossible to complete without a guide. It's full of situations where you just can't understand where you are supposed to go or what you are supposed to do. This makes you play-through really impressive.

I think Tomb Raider had a symbiotic relationship with the magazine publishers. They would get great hype and reviews because the magazines new that every Tomb Raider release would result in huge sales for walkthrough editions

Games were different back then, gamers were too. It wasn't a big deal if you spent a half hour figuring out what to do, it was part of the fun. But now every game is designed in a way that holds your hand. Hell, just look at how WoW has changed since 2004 to see a clear example. It's not necessarily a bad thing but it definitely removes a part of what made games fun. Also gamers do NOT like to have their time wasted nowadays, if a game isn't fun or too hard they just quit playing. Not that that's a bad thing either, there's too many good games to play to waste it on something you're not enjoying. I was definitely too young for tomb raider when I first played. It was the first one when it came out and I was like 4 or something, I got stuck on one level in a tomb and could never figure it out so every once and a while I'd boot it up and run around for a bit then play Spyro.

@@beeman4266 me too. I didn't ever manage to pass the first level. I just used cheats to go to different levels and watch cutscenes or walk around till I got stuck. And the game had a system where you would get appropriate weapons as you progressed in the game, so level-skipping cheats would leave you as a sitting duck

@@beeman4266 you touched a few interesting points: I'll add that the more a game is based on narrative, the more action options (different ways to interact with the world) you have and the bigger the world is, the more it will need to hold your hand. Think about quests in a typical action RPG: you have to go from point A to point B to perform a very specific action in a massive open world. If the game didn't hold your hand, you'd never be able to figure out yourself where to go and what to do. While in a game like classic Tomb Raider, you have a labyrinthine level design for sure, but still limited in its extension, controlled and somewhat linear. Moreover, you have no quests and the narrative develops with just a cutscene at the end of some levels. The interaction options you have with the environment never change, anytime you press a button you will always perform the same action, so you don't need guidance, and figuring out where to go is basically the essence of the gameplay, so it wouldn't make sense if the game told you that. Games like these are no longer made as we developed technologies that allow us much more complex gameplay experiences. The problem is that those more complex experiences are not necessarily more fun. Most of the time, for me they aren't, and I still consider the simplistic classic Tomb Raider the most engaging games I've ever played. They're still unbeaten as my all time favorite after 25 years. It's so damn true: younger gamers have no patience for a game that doesn't trigger them with frequent action scenes, shootings/fights, dialogues and cutscenes. They feel them as boring, as they lack content and as time wasters. They don't get that the essence of the game is exactly in that slower pace and silent approach, and that you're not wasting your time when trying to figure out what to do but that's part of the game. It's not strange that a modern game that many people have no patience for is Elden Ring. That's not only for the fight difficulty, that's also because it's very close to older games like classic Tomb Raider in many aspects: silent, slower, not scripted and not guided at all, although it's a massive open world. Why can it afford to do that? Because it's not narrative based. It's lore based, which is very different. And therefore it doesn't give you specific missions to complete in a specific way, but just tells you "go out and find your way through this world", as classic Tomb Raider did. And this aspect makes it the modern game which exploration and atmosphere I've enjoyed the most, although I'm not a fan of its combat difficulty.

My dad and I used to play this together. I was like 8 or 9. He directed Lara with the keywords arrows and I was in charge of jumping with the space bar and shooting. We played like this until Last Revelation. I'm 30 now but I will never forget those times. I love my parents, both of them made my childhood a nice memory, despite the hardships we went through, they always had time for me. I wish to be as good, if not better, when I become a mom myself. Tomb Raider will become part of my future children's childhood too... Until Last Revelation, the game became insufferable for me from Angel of Darkness forward.

What I find interesting about this game is how different the PlayStation and PC versions are in terms of difficulty. I played this on PlayStation from the age of 10 to my teens and I am ashamed to admit I never completed it without cheats. It was just so frigging dark and the save system was so punishing, you spent most of your time backtracking across half the levels after your endless sudden deaths from traps you COULD NOT SEE. Even with the official strategy guide I don't think I ever made it through London without cheating. I remember being in tears of frustration on the second level!!! Then many years later I played it on PC and my god it was like the sun came out. Turning up the brightness and unlimited saves, it went from being difficult and COMPLETELY frustrating to difficult but actually fun. Now age 32 I've completed it on PC so many times I can do Lud's Gate while eating pizza, but I will always have MAD respect for those 90s kids who actually beat this game on PlayStation back in the day. God, that version was unforgiving 🤣

My favorite TR. Played so many times, beat so many times as a child… nowadays the game feels odd, outdated. Bad geometry, bad gameplay, bad sound effects, bad level design and especially nothing makes sense at all. But it was great back in the day. Love the memories

I got this for Christmas 1998 along with NHL 1999. Not the best, but due to this my nostalgic favorite of the TR series. To be honest, I found this game really hard, like the design of the levels made it really hard for me to figure out what exactly should I do next. So I mostly just played around in different levels, skipped through, watched the cutscenes and enjoyed the exploration, atmosphere, etc. But I spent hours and hours doing this, just having fun with it. Nice memories. Judging by the comments below, I'd like to know how many people actually finished the game on their own. Because IMO it seems TR3 is one of those games everyone at the time played, it sold well due to the brand and Lara, but really, not many people actually finished the game or enjoyed it that much.
