before the nice Feldco people came along, people would pinch back tomatoes and other plants with thumb and fingers. this would produce a green stain, resulting in the expression that good farmers had "green thumbs".

I live in a one room apartment in Sweden. I only have windows on the north side and I´m growing my first tomato plant in my kitchen window. I only use natural light and yesterday I saw that I´m having my first tomato ❤️ I´m super happy about this because most people told me that it was impossible because tomatoes need a lot of sunlight. I also have some herbs in the same window.

Great info... Love the container tomato / basil combo. When I’m out in the garden, I like to grab a cherry tomato, a little basil leaf, and wrap it around the tomato. Tasty little gardener treat. 💁🏼♀️ 🇺🇸
I do love to see the kitty (or a dog) photo bomb the video. There is absolutely no time that this is not appropriate! Love it!

Great info Laura! I 💚💚💚 🍅. I’ve grown tomatoes for 45+ years, since I was a little girl. I live in East Tennessee and our climate is completely opposite of yours. We have always planted in rows in a big garden. We stake them and tie them up as they grow taller. Usually have 125-150 tomato plants of only a few different varieties. We do a lot of canning in the summer to have great tomatoes for soups, chili’s, spaghetti sauce, or to just open and eat, etc. The last several years, I have planted a few tomatoes in a small area at my house. 🐛🐛🐛 Every single year, I get hornworms at the house. Never ever do I see them in the garden area. I plant marigolds with these to ward off insects the last couple of years. I did get some of the spray you recommended last year after seeing a few on my tomatoes. I really liked it. I plant them at several different areas at the house and those little pests found every one of my plants!!! ☹️🐛 Nothing worse than a hornworm devouring a beautiful plant. That’s one thing I would like you to discuss more for new gardeners. Don’t know why they are at the house and never in the big garden. Any ideas? I also cut the bottom leaves off and plant them deep. I’ve found that the deeper the better! You can lay the plant on its side and the roots establish better and support the plant a little better. I also cut the suckers off as soon as I see them. So healthy for the plant and does allow better air flow! I will be adding some straw around mine at home this year. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom and your love of gardening. Stay Safe & Happy! Blessings. 😇

It just makes my day when Russell steals the show. I may try tomatoes this year. As I have said I retired to the beach and not much yard but I can do containers. We have deer, rabbits, squirrels and many representatives from nature so I have to protect my plants. Hope to have two or three varieties this year, thanks for the video. After WW2, here in Europe was hard time after all devastation in human and economic resorces and then in 1946 to 1948 aid started to come from USA, all people here named it Truman Aid, from mushed potatoes and scrambled eggs in powder to vegetable seeds, one of seeds was tamatoes, who know what variety it was but it was open polinator variety foe sure because my late grandmother all her life colected seeds from that tomatoes, we still plant them because my aunt still colect seeds from that tomato, it is great variety with large fruits, flashy with not a lot of seeds, great for slicing for salads but also great for cooking saouces, not only in my family that seeds are still growing, other people do, nobody know variety but everybody call it "americano". Offtopic but thought this little story about tomato could be interestinf to some viewers :)

Love tomatoes! One year my Aunt and I had a fun contest to who would get the first ripe tomato. I planted my plants early, in my area, Louisville Kentucky, they say not to plant the tomatoes before the Kentucky Derby. I planted early because I didn't know, but I kept vigil and covered my plants when temps dropped low. I got the first tomato before July 1. I gave it to my Aunt.

Great coffee with Laura and Russell and the beginnings of tomato planting! Now I see some mistakes that I made last year in our garden at work and I will be keeping a journal of what to do for next year since we are not going to have a garden at our center since we are still closed. I think it's great that you are doing these basic videos because there are so many people that are new to gardening this year in particular due to the issues we are having.Thank you for thinking of how to help everyone become better gardeners and also be able to enjoy the fruits of their labors!!!!!
Tomatoes are definitely one of those things that taste 20 million times better when you grow them yourself! 🤗 🍅
most thorough video I have ever watched!
good evening Laura, how is baby girl Samantha doing? Great I know. With all you have done for so many people helping to keep us "normal" during this pandemic.....I am getting ready to grow some tomatoes and I just saw this!!! Great info, thank you. YES , something special for specific vegetables, or flowers would be great. Thank you.
I water my tomatoes a different way! I bury an old medium size plant can in the ground and plant my tomato beside the plant can so the root of the tomato is even with the holes in the bottom of the plant can. I then water in the plant can so all the water goes to the root and never overhead! I have never had stronger tomatoes. The roots grow down instead of out sideways searching for water! Works like a dream every year!
Laura you did an amazing job at informing everyone about the types of tomatoes and how to grow them. Thank you. I’d love to see more videos on different types of garden plants.
My Uncle was the head Ag agent for his County and would have loved this video!! Well done!! 🌿🍅🌿
I clicked so fast! You helped me prune my tomato for the first time last year and so many flushed out afterwards!
Two years ago I found a packet of tomato seeds in an old gardening magazine dated 1986, they were in aluminium foil. Well I planted them and they grew much to my dismay, they were called Santorini a small bushy variety and they bore fruit. The fruit was a bit sour don't know if it was the variety or the age of the seed. Anywho I am going to have another crack at growing tomatoes when our season allows. Thanks again for a really informative video Laura. Cheers Tammy.

Hi, I recently found your channel and I've been binge watching your videos. I'm enjoying them very much. I just planted my very first tomato, cucumber, and pepper plants. I also planted some basil, mint, dill, cilantro, and thyme. I know nothing about gardening. I've always enjoyed watching other people garden, but always afraid to try it myself. Watching your videos inspired me to just go for it and start planting. Now that I have more time on my hands, I'm at my local garden shop almost every day. My patio garden is starting to look very nice. I planted trees, shrubs, vines, all sorts of flowers, and succulent arrangements. Thank you for inspiring me. I'm really enjoying the process of planting and watching things grow. Wish me luck.
Total beginner here. Great information. Thanks.
Number one way to prevent blossom end rot is to keep a consistent watering schedule. I've heard this from many master gardeners. I use the Earth box as it allows consistent access to water and have never had blossom rot.

When conditions are good for the season we have plants that grow nine feet and the roots move out more then a foot or two. When I was a kid my grandfather would grow our plants from the next generation of the seeds he had from way back but when he died someone tossed the seeds so now we have to get the plants from the store. His plants and their fruit were better. thanks

If you lay the plant down and cover the dirt up to about 1/3 from the top, you'll actually get more than 1 plant. Its pretty cool. I haven't done it in years, maybe next year.
If you feel bad about pruning off the suckers or bottom branches, I’ve had great just sticking them in a pot of soil and starting new plants. You can either expand your garden or give them away.

Hi! AMAZING video! I have watched Garden Answer for a while now, and I am so thankful for how you are taking what I find to be an intimidating subject (growing tomatoes) and breaking it down in a way that is both easy to understand but also answers so many questions. I feel more confident after watching! Could you please share ideas for ways to support indeterminate tomatoes? Shipping from garden stores is taking a long time, big box stores around us are constantly packed, and most of the garden centers here are seasonal and don't carry plant supports. There are so many images online for how to make your own, but I'm wondering if you could share some that you or a family member have found successful. I am growing in raised beds, if that makes a difference. Thank you! Love Garden Answer!

Can you please talk about hardening off your seedlings and acclimating new plants from a nursery. I feel like I see a lot of people ordering on line and being dissapointed by 1. Expecting to get big and bushy plants, and 2. And then planting and having them die. I often wonder if they gave their plants time to acclimate before planting right away especially if they live in scorching hot areas. I know so many people have been inspired by you to plant so many seeds, myself included😁, but many will have disastrous results if they try to bring them out straight from their house and plant them in full sun right away. Thanks! Looking forward to more updates on your seedlings!! I bought the stack n grow system and love it!!!!
