How do you feel about the Springfield XDM models? A buddy of mine is offering me his XDM .40 for a good price because he wants to get rid of it, and I really want a heavier caliber than the swarm of nines my family has laying around, but I'm not sure. I WILL be getting a 1911 at some point. Should I just wait and get that, or jump on this before my friend finds another guy to pawn it off on?

the paracord will cover the back of the tang, so it might reduce shock in the hand compared to the stock handle. he could always slide a bike inner tube onto the handle before wrapping it to reduce shock even more.

So how is the retention in the sheath without the strap? It seemed like it held pretty well, if you were to mount it onto your belt and just not engage or remove the strap, do you think it would be a safe carry? I hate having straps and unnecessary or excessive steps in the way of me and my tool of choice.

My experience with the Chogan is that the scales work fine. It's probably just personal user preference. I've also known several others using this axe who have no problem with the scales. You're right, though. Removable scales do mean you could clean under the scales or modify or replace them at your preference.

$129 dollars for a cheap steel axe? 26 Reviews on Amazon showed pictures or stated the axe blade chips out dime size pieces out of the blade. Most of the chip pitures I saw are the top tip where it is thinner. They should of not opted for a nice design vs practical blade. Looks like a bad heat treat since it's at a specific spot. $80 Browning tactical axe I saw tested was good. Cold steel is more reliable and cheaper.

I can understand your thoughts on paracord wrap but im thinking the reduced width of the handle will increase shock in your hand due to its being less distributed. Perhaps some grip tape over the scales would make it feel more comfortable. Custom g10 or micarta would even be better made even with the handle rather than slightly smaller as the FRN is.. also the scales could be extended over the the exposed tang making it more comfortable for the pinky. Cool hawk Take care!!

I have both tomahawks and hatchets. I prefer tomahawks though because they are generally lighter in weight, does about 75% of the work a hatchet can do, and is easier to repair in the case you do have a break in the handle.

I think I'll stick with my more traditional tomahawks. This is cool, but I'm not seeing where this is necessarily superior to more traditional designs. That said, I can definitely see how this could be useful in a more tactical or rescue situation. Good piece to keep in your car or truck in case of an emergency

You should para-cord wrap the scales also so if you are in a situation were you need para-cord you would still have a functional handle.

Also Jeff its important to keep in mind that this Hawk is not meant for lots of work like that, sure improvised fine I guess. but its not meant for that. Its meant a breaching tool, rescue tool and weapon, not for prolonged work. Its meant to stay in your hand under rough conditions, wet, bloody, muddy, etc. So if it eats up your hands well just keep that in mind.

Hatchets have always doubled as weapons, and especially the Franks were famous for using throwing axes. Personally, I consider the tomahawk/hatchet distinction to be pointless. It's a sharpened metal head on the end of a stick and intended for hacking. It's the same thing.

At first I thought when you said when there is something "uncomfortable" it was just sort for nit-picky but then I thought... You're not just holding these tools you're putting them through real use. I remember when I was a kid I got a blister from just using a machete. I'm sorry for thinking that way at first.

a hatchet,if your thinking small ax ,kindling type purpose,a properly will have one side flat one side tapered, depending on left or right-handed users,to steer the blade way from the user and peel the kindling away from the piece being chopped, check out some older hatchet, and small hand axes now everything is very generic in construction, but one size fits all is a screwed mentality.i didn't believe it either till my grand-father showed me the two different tapers.

I think its CRKT that it is almost there as a great Knife and tool company but not really there yet. They have a lot of products that look cool but the function on them its not really good. I actually only have 2 products from them and I don't think I would get anymore for right now. As for a Hawk that one you got there is nice, I got the trench Hawk but that one is a love it or hate it hawk.

Also I know this designed by RMJ Tactical for CRKT, but its basically trying to be like a cheaper version or copy of the Custom Winkler Hawks, and Tracker Dan one. The Sayoc fighting hawks/models more specifically. Not bashing it for that. Not everyone can afford such things at those prices, so these look like a good option for cheaper.for that matter most cant afford a true RMJ. Just saying, so you guys get an idea of the influence to these hawks. and idea behind them. but not as good.
