I agree wholeheartedly with SM West 95. Overall, Tom Osborne is the greatest coach in the history of college football. Of course, he had his seven game losing streak in bowl games. He also suffered early heartbreaks against his great rival The Oklahoma Sooners. He also has one record you will never see again. His Cornhusker teams won at least nine games in every season of his career! The old rule of "What Goes Up Must Come Down," never applied in the case of Tom Osborne. Coaching icons like Darrell Royal, Frank Broyles, Woody Hayes and John McKay all had several misfires during their careers. Even Alabamas Bear Bryant, lauded by many as the greatest coach ever, had many lowlights. Bryant never beat Tennessee and General Neyland. He also never defeated Notre Dame or Texas during his Alabama career! A regal bearing and catchy nickname can't gloss over those facts. Osbornes chief rival at Oklahoma, Barry Switzers undisciplined coaching style finally caught up with him. Leaving under fire. The end result was the Sooner program crashing to the ground. Switzer had a heavy hand in that downfall. In his closing act, Osborne was undoubtedly the greatest ever. Finishing 60-3 with three national titles in his final five seasons!! That will never be seen again. Neither will his unparalleled streak of sustained excellence. Much better than any coach who wins today and is gone tomorrow.

Nebraska fans should have watched this before wanting Frank Solich fired. The Nebraska fans were so spoiled at the end of the Osborne era. Solich got fired for not being competitive against elite teams. Almost ten years later does it look like Nebraska is competitive against top 10 teams. It doesn't look like it to me.

Re: his leading the All American stat. If Neb had it to over again, one has to wonder if they would have said, Tom, we are hiring you to win football games, not become the Harvard of Div 1 football. The losing bowl record will always haunt his legacy for those evaluating a football coach for his #1 priority, to win football games THAT MATTER. Once again, Osborne didn't get it right. Poor man.
