Tom Hanks, the novelist
The Oscar-winning actor's experiences in Hollywood are the inspiration for his new novel, about the adventures that go into the creation of a film. Tom Hanks talks with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz about "The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece," and about the lessons he learned, regarding acting and writing, from such collaborators as director Ron Howard and screenwriter Nora Ephron.

I met Tom Hanks & Ben Mankiewicz one day a part I met Tom Hanks in New York City and the Next Day in Buffalo New York I met Ben Mankiewicz at the North Park Theater for a TCM event what a quintessential interview here. 😂
Hanks is one of the reasons I still have faith in humanity. He’s one of the biggest names in Hollywood and is still a good-hearted human. And holy cow he looks well. He looks like his health is really peak. I hope he sticks around for a long time.

yeah.. totally agree! such a good person..
Love the exchange with Nora Ephron he talks about.
He has written a book of short stories as well Looking forward to the novel
He has certainly gone far. From selling peanuts, at Oakland A's baseball games as a teenager, to being a two time Oscar winner, to being a director/establishing Playtone Pictures, to being a novelist as well as a Mark Twain Humorist and Kennedy Center Homor award winner. I remember him in Busom Buddies and have loved so many of his movies. I wonder if, when writing his novel, he used one of his favorite typewriters to write it? The world may never know.❤❤

I thoroughly enjoyed “Uncommon Type”, Hanks’s collection of short stories, and I’ll definitely be buying his novel as soon as I can get my hands on it. He writes nearly as well as he acts… and perhaps his latest effort will prove the writer has eclipsed the actor. I love the raw authenticity of this guy.
I learned a lot about him from reading Ann Patchett's beautiful essay "My Precious Days," which recounts how Tom Hanks' assistant went to live with Patchett for a few months while being treated for cancer in Nashville. It's moving and at times almost fable-like and ultimately says a lot about the meaning of friendship.

Epstein island Now that that's a great movie
I just happen to end up loving every movie Tom Hanks made because - well, he made me believe what he was going through seem real, I felt him or whatever he was going through just seemed so real. Who forgets a movie that he has done and what it's about? No one!
Love Tom Hanks❤️
I trust Tom. Just pre-ordered the book!
There was a missed interview question series here...Mr. Hanks is known for his passionate love of the typewriter. Did he write this novel on one, or more, of his typewriters or did he resort to his computer word processor? I am so excited about this novel because I have so many questions about what various people in the credits actually do. If you aren't in the industry, do you know what a gaffer does? I Googled it. I know I am not alone. It is difficult to appreciate people's hard work when their actual job title and credit is a mystery.
Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks were Perfect together. Always knew Tom would be a big star but Peter was a fantastic actor on par with Tom. Always wondered why their careers ended up so differently.
Love love love him always❤
Met him at a restaurant in LA. He went to every table to say hi to each person there. Stand up dude!
Thank you Sunday Morning for another amazing interview ❤😊
Oooo, just thrills me that Tom Hanks has written a novel! So love that he has a typewriter collection. Wish I still had my Dad's old Smith-Corona. Once I did not need to use it anymore, gave it back, of course. The thought that he actually uses typewriters, so cool! Audited typewriting class during high school. Learned on a manual typewriter vs an electric. Best thing ever!
Thank you Tom For a lifetime of entertainment.
One of the best actors!
Book sounds like Budd Schulberg "What Makes Sammy Run?" Classic Hollywood novel.
Tom Hanks has been winning our hearts for a long time. Even when I see a box of "Russell Stover's Chocolate" or those Bubba Gump restaurants, I would then think of "Forrest Gump". Even that film is one of my favorites, according to my mother and I. We really owe a lot of gratitude to Hanks, out of the work and roles he's done in the past, as well as his marriage to the lovely, Rita Wilson, too!

First movie I saw him in was Splash then Bachelor Party. Bachelor Party is still one of my favorites.
Tom looks great! I need to get back into that kind of shape.
Movies do have an impact on our life. I remember the theater I saw Return of the Jedi in in 1983 when I was 10. I remember watching Splash on TV in the 80s as a kid waiting for Thanksgiving dinner to be ready. Too many more memories of going to the movies, or movies at home, to mention.
I just watch OTTO last night. I thought it was a really good Tom Hanks’s movie!
"Laugh is lack uh box uh chocklits: y'nevah know what you're gonna git!" Love that line and how he says it!
I completely forgot about Bodom zbuddies. I loved that show.
Tom Hanks, the GOAT.
People are always saying he's a national treasure. That's because he is, indeed, a national treasure.💙💫 Mr. Hanks..we love you.. and thank you. 💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙
Tom read my niece's biography on stage a handful of years ago in New York and did a little skit with her. She has kabuki syndrome and it was a big treat for the whole family. He's an all around great guy. Also, I managed actors for a spell and one day wound up on set at Paramount to support one of my actors who had booked a part in a movie. I remember wandering around by myself snapping pics, and WISH now that I had known I could have waltzed right into a closed set no problem. As long as you "act" like you belong, then you do. That is a good life lesson. xo
Love Tom Hanks movies

We need Larry Crowne Part 2!!
Coming from a childhood and family life that was under privileged and erratic he is naturally humble. Because he understands the value of what it means to care he connects easily with those around him by giving care.
Fantastic interview. It must be difficult interviewing a friend. The most poignant question was the one about raising the children alone. Very powerful!
