It's not meant as a jab at Dwan. Generally people only 4-bet with Jacks or better. Phil was spot on with his thought process he just came up with the wrong hand combination. I remember watching this when it first aired. Dwan bluffed at an insane rate even for Dwan and he got away with almost every bluff he attempted. If I remember right, it was Eli that picked off a big bluff when he had top pair against Dwan's missed draw which got him stuck. I think Phil taking too long is a legit criticism. 5 minutes is enough time to make a life or death decision so it's enough time to decide to call or fold an all in shove on the river. But there's actually a lot going on here. Flop comes possible straight and flush draw, turn pairs the board and a blank on the river, no draws completed. At this point either Dwan is going to bluff hard to try to win the hand or he's had a made hand the entire way through. It's as polarized as it can get. The shove on the river is the exclamation point on that polarization because Phil's stack preservation style is susceptible to the big bet bluff and Phil knows that that is a weakness of his game that other players have exploited in the past especially guys that without hesitation will over bet and bluff all in.

Helmuth beats all Dwan’s bluffs. It was just ridiculous that Dwan had J10s , best hand on board that Helmuth never ever thought could be in Dwan’s range. It’s a standard call against a wild opponent. U should play ranges not think your opponent always has the best hand. Dwan moving all in looked like AK or missed flush draw. Announcer even said that “ Dwan went from being stuck big to becoming a small winner “. Helmuth knew Dwan was losing hence tilted & could punt everything off a bluff. Helmuth is a fantastic player. Never come to a conclusion on a player based on 1 single hand . It’s the sample size , if Helmuth plays 25K hands he could easily beat Dwan heads-up, just like he beat Daniel Negreanu. 1 hand means shit. At the end there when Phil says “I knew you started with nothing” has a deeper meaning than just “bro 97offsuit is also nothing” Phil was trying to make Tom think that Phil called the river with AK as a bluff catcher (when we know he raised pre with 97off) by saying “I knew he started with nothing” and mucking his cards. He was trying to imply Dwan got lucky because remember we are the only ones that can see what he has unless he must table it for showdown so it would really hurt his image at the table to open bluff so early into the game as well with a garbage hand on top of making a horrible river call.

it's really not. the tens pair up, making it harder to actually hold one and a queen is less advantageous for his range than a king or jack. Normally, with a hand that re-raises pre-flop, you have a lot of stuff which doesn't connect with this board. The bet is polar, so Dwan is representing a small range of nutted hands, not an overall advantage and balances it with a range with more bluffs than he would for a smaller bet size, to make the caller relatively indifferent. I think he should fold this, but its not ridiculously straight forward as you seem to think.

Dwan likely has 3 combo's of QQ, 1 combo of 10's, 2 combo's of J10s, 1 combo of Q10s, 2 combo's of K10s and 6 combos of A10o, which makes for 15 total combos. He'll check some of these rather than triple barrel as they block Hellmuth's calling range. Phil only has to win 1 in 3 times approx to break even, in other words, If Dwan has 8 bluff combos from a selection of low suited aces, KJ, AJ, 98s, it's a breakeven call.

Because that's Phil Hellmuth, simply. When he decides to make a play it's based on emotions and his reads. We all know he usually play very snug, but from time to time he decides to be sticky and call down very light when he think he will catch a player bluffing. Yeah 97o is a dreadful hand to even consider this idea since he is even behind most of Tom's bluffs. But the plan was probably made in the particular hand when he felt very strongly Dwan was about to punt his stack, so he decided to call with intentions to hold on to his hand if he got a piece of the flop.

It's literally 3 10's or a bluff. Dwan has made so many of these 3 barrel bluffs that Helmuth's call isn't actually that bad. But by Phils usual play it is unusual

It's definitely not Tom's value range here. Phil's hand is pretty much face up here. The strongest he can possibly have is AQ. Tom can do this with 77, QQ, KK, AA and AQ for value with little to no worries of being called by better.

I’ve watched a lot of Tom Dwan on HSP and PAD along with a few other cash game shows many times and whenever I see him make these overbet jams he has the effective nuts most of the time..and still gets called. I guess he must balance this at some point(off camera) or it would never work…

He also bluffs with totally nothing the other hands, Best example was on HSP he got trip 2s to fold and Pocket AAs with nothing. He bet 7/2 into people and won vs AK by massively overbetting pre flop. Ivey failed to call his bluffs

He’s not calling because he thinks he beats valuebets lol, he calls because he beats all bluffs. It doesnt matter if you have a queen or a seven in this spot, they both beat bluffs and lose to all the strong hands

@@carlo8044 disagree for two reasons: (1) super aggressive players like Dwan can also value bet thinner to balance out all the bluffs in their range so I wouldn't be shocked to see Dwan play a queen like this; (2) distribution says this is one of the worst hands Phil can ever have in this spot (really, he shouldn't have it at all, the preflop play is really bad) so even against a super aggressive player like Dwan you gotta have some folds in your range against an overbet on the river and 97o is certainly it, especially since the 9 blocks some missed straight draws. Just an all-round bad call by Phil
