I love this movie...I immediately joined the Navy the day after seeing this movie as a high school senior in 1986...I was lucky enough to obtain orders to an F-14 squadron as a mechanic. This movie inspired me to become an airline pilot. Without this movie no telling what I would have done. hopefully this new movie will live up to the original..Thanks Tom Cruise!

Is it though? Learning to fly and being able to read don’t necessarily go hand in hand. When he was learning the F-14, he had instructors and a studio that would have hired someone to read the manuals to him if he needed it. I don’t count that as impressive. What would have been impressive is if he would have realized Scientology is a looney tunes cult with dyslexia. But...that didn’t happen.

He should have made it clear during the interview he wasn't actually controlling the jets during those scenes because he was not. The military pilots were actually flying, not him. The Department of Defense would NEVER, repeat never allow a civilian to fly one of their aircraft alone. He was flying the P-51 (the propeller airplane) shown briefly in the trailer, he actually owns that airplane.
