Toka Biv - Overnight tramp in the Ruahine Ranges

On this trip I head up into the ruahines one again for an overnight trip, staying overnight at Toka Biv. Had some wild wind on the walk out.

Awesome mate. Cool little bivy. Typical Ruahine wind. Makes it tough going when its like that but still worth the journey. Looking forward to the next special trip. Sounds fun. Till the next one 👍

Love the Ruahines and Tararuas! Living abroad these days so I get back every few years and get the pack and rifle out for a bash. I could smell the air when you were on the tops in the fog. Nothing like getting soaked and blown on the tops!! Thanks for the uploads, makes me want to be home in the backcountry. Cheers. P.S Did you hear any stags roaring?!

G'day mate. Found your channel, watched about a minute of it, and thought yep, I'm going to subscribe. Haven't done Toka, but I see on the list that Sunrise is next to view. Have done that a few times. But now that I'm in my late 70's, some of the Ruahine huts accessibility, is probably going to be a bit of a mission. Just a quick Q and A. What food did you take, and where did you source it from.? Btw, in my experience, it was always blowing up on the tops, on Ruahine range. Thanks for sharing this. Until next time, all the very best.

Just the basic freeze dried meals from hunting and fishing, usually get backcountry cuisine or Real Meals.

Impressive walk Joseph. You have the confidence to follow unmarked tracks (something I'm not too happy doing on my own - unless the visibility is good). I haven't been to that part of the Ruahines but is high on my 'to do' list. Shame Leon Kinvig hut is closed. BTW what is the condition of the road to the car park?

Not too bad, got there in a front wheel drive. The road winds a bit and there are a few pot holes but is easily doable.

@@TheWayfarerNZ Thanks! As long as a small FWD middle-aged car can make it! It's hard to judge accessibility to suitable car parks just looking at the map so it's good to have firsthand knowledge.

BTW I hope you make it to Syme Hut on Taranaki Maunga! I was there in late Feb and despite beautiful sunshine I experienced winds as never before. Made Tararua gales look like a gentle breeze!
