Toilet Inlet / Fill Valve Replacement

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Toilet fill valve, bottom entry inlet valve replacement
If your toilet doesn't stop filling, chances are you need a new inlet valve. Inlet valves fail every so often and need to be replaced. This video will take you through the procedure I followed to replacement my own valve.
If your set up is similar to mines you will not require many tools. Adjustable wrench and some pipe grips. I have added links below if you require these.
The valve I used is a Siamp valve, also linked below.
Hope it helps.

Watched this as I thought I needed a new valve but learned from this vid that the arm that rises and falls to stop the water might just be catching. So it proved! Saved me a trip to the shop, the price of a valve and the time to fit it and earned a few domestic kudos to boot. Muchas gracias!

It could be. The water level could be a little high and flowing into the overflow (into the bowl). You can adjust the level. If its not the inlet then there is a good chance its the flush mechanism.

Thank you for the wonderfully instructive video. My toilet inlet was exactly the same as the one shown so I could follow your clear instructions step by step. The only question I had was about the red washer, but you answered that in another comment, so thanks. I must say, having taken the old inlet mechanism apart, it’s not clear what had gone wrong as there are very few moving parts. Plus I had already replaced the membrane so I know that that wasn’t the cause of constant filling. Could it be the washer/seal at the top? And if so, that tiny and accessible part would have been MUCH quicker and easier to replace😃

Have you tried to adust the float? If the float is too high the water will keep flowing. Lift the float manually and see if it switches the valve off. If it doesn't there is a problem inside the valve. If you changed the diaphragm and still have problems a new valve may be required.

You just have to pick one that will fit in the space you have in your cistern. If you have a ball cock valve you will probably have the old flush mechanism this takes up a bit of space. Equally just change the valve like for like. You can still get ball cock valves 👍

I’ve installed a new torbeck bottom fill valve but it is leaking underneath where the plastic white nut screws up to the cistern. Will putting a rubber washer in between the bottom of the cistern and the white nut create a better seal so it doesn’t leak? I’m stuck what to do. The rubber part is fitted on the inside of the cistern correctly, it’s just dripping underneath the cistern where this white nut is.

  • @handymancraftglasgow

    @handymancraftglasgow

    5 жыл бұрын

Sounds like the rubber washer on the inside of the cistern is not located properly or the white nut is not tight enough. Check the washer first, make sure it is in tact and not split and make sure the bottom of the cistern is nice and clean, no grit or dirt. Then tighten the white nut making sure the valve doesn't move from the center of the hole so the rubber is covering as much of the hole as possible. The rubber washer on the inside of the cistern should be enough to seal.

Handyman Craft Glasgow Thanks for the reply. I’ve just took it back off again and noticed that the washer on the old fill valve was flat and not like this new one which is sort of coned. The inlet valves are pretty much the same. There is a link in the description for the one I used in the vid but was not identical to the one I swapped out. If your toilet is connected with a flexible hose or plastic pipe (with a bit of play on the pipe) you will be able to connect. If you are onto copper measure the threaded part of the valve and get a new one with the same length of thread and the swap should go smoothly.

Good question. The orange ring is a fibre washer to seal between the bottom of the valve and the water connection nut see here kzread.info/dash/bejne/oa5q3JRteMbPg8o.html . The washer will fit in the metal fitting and then tighten the fitting to the valve. The fitting I have (flexible connector) in the video already has a rubber washer built in so the fibre washer wasn't required. If your fitting has a fibre washer then its a good idea to replace it.

Very clear tutorial, many thanks for this. One question: If I can't find the same kind of fill valve, could I replace it with a different sort, assuming it's still bottom entry and the inlet pipes are a standard/universal size?

Yes you can. Shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure the new unit will fit in the cistern, some are a bit bulkier than others.

Pretty much, as long as your toilet its bottom entry. 👍

Hi mate my toilet inlet valve sensor isn't working correctly (the grey twirly bit doesn't recognise that the water needs to stop at a certain level and water continuously flows into the tank even after changing a ripped washer) Any ideas what it could be?

Also the inlet valve fills water from the bottom bit in the tank, dont know if that's correct

Sounds like you may need a new valve.

How do I know if I need to change the valve? Mine is overflowing after i changed the diaphragm as this was split. I've adjusted as far as I can but the level still comes over the float and the float doesnt come all the way up. Any ideas?

Make sure the diaphragm is seated correctly and you have lined up the notches. A misalignment can cause this problem 👍

Its definitely lined up properly as no water is coming out of that area now. The part right on the top in this video plugs the hole when water level is full. Mine doesnt move and just seeps water out of it

I've replaced the washer(diaphragm) but the valve on top, can I change this or do I have to buy a new inlet valve

I would deffo open it up. Make sure the washer is seated properly and put back together. If it doesn't work a new valve may be in order.

My toilet is making a very loud vibrating noise when flushed. Am I correct in saying this is the part probably causing it to do that?

You didn’t have to change the whole valve, you could have screwed the new one onto the gray part it’s interchangeable with new fill valve.

This way you can use any brand of fill valve instead of the exact same make. 😀👍
