Together Wherever We Go - Gypsy - Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden - Stereo

Фильм және анимация

This deleted number from "Gypsy" was included on the DVD, but the sound was from a horrible 16mm print. I've replaced it with sound from the CD and edited into the existing film to give an idea of how it actually played. Unfortunately for Natalie, the key was lowered to accommodate Roz, forcing Natalie to sing (and yell) way above her range.
From "The Unkindest Cuts" by Doug McClelland:
Miss Russell was helped in the singing department by Lisa Kirk. When I asked Lisa how much of the vocalizing she had done for Russell, she said: "All of it, except for the 'Mr. Goldstone' number. The whole thing turned out to be a drag. Warners contacted me to do it three days before I was to leave for England, offering me a piece of the soundtrack album, too. And I begged them to let me sing it 'up', but I had to sing the whole thing in her key, which was lower than mine."
However, the one number in which Roz really seemed to be doing her own warbling - and the liveliest in the film, superior to its rendering on the stage - was "Together" which she did with Natalie Wood and Karl Malden. It rated applause from previewers. When the film bowed at Radio City Music Hall in New York, it did so minus this delightful interlude. This footage was not to reapper for subsequent engagements, either. The film, and Russell's performance, had been deprived of considerable steam.

It was deleted because Natalie Wood had a clause in her contract that if she didn't like the way she sounded, she could have the power to have it cut. I had always wondered how one of the best numbers in the show was cut until I read this information.

Actually, Roz' key forced Natalie to go UP an octave, not down - that's why she yells the whole song. The clause actually gave the producers the option to cut a song - they just couldn't dub Natalie. I think the studio cut it.

This is fun to see incorporated back into the film, even with the strained sounding vocals, & the number is very nearly intact. However, I wonder if there's a truly complete take, since the first verse (with the line about "no fits, no fights, no feuds & no egos") has been skipped over. My guess is that the first verse was filmed & present originally, trimmed out for whatever reason, & eventually lost, but I'm still happy that any portion of the song survived.

  • @lostvocals8

This 16mm print is the only copy that has ever been found, so it's likely this is all that was filmed. The entire number was cut, so there was no reason to trim it.

I imagine you're right. My confusion was compounded by the soundtrack album (the original vinyl LP), which represents the song with ONLY the first verse (sung by Lisa Kirk). At the point I got the record, I didn't know the background about how the number was filmed but ultimately deleted. I was surprised many years later when the 16mm footage turned up. It was nice to see it as a dvd extra then, & your edit here is even nicer, so thanks for sharing.@@lostvocals8

It's a great song, and fun to watch even though it looks more like a first run through than the real thing! Many people have commented on the poor quality of Natalie and Roz's singing (though personally l don't mind it at all), whilst overlooking the fact that the only musical pieces that were cut from the film were this and the latter section of You'll Never Get Away From Me - coincidentally the only two times Karl Malden was called upon to sing! Maybe the problem wasn't with either of the ladies but with Karl, who was hardly a Caruso.

That makes no sense. If they lowered the key, she shouldn't have to "reach" the higher notes, the problem would be that it's too low. She's just NOT a singer. She's was gorgeous, had good acting chops, definitely an appealing personality ... but singing just wasn't one of her gifts. Yet for some reason, she was not only Maria in West Side, not only Louise in Gypsy, but they gave her INSIDE DAISY CLOVER, a train wreck of a film with Natalie required to do song after song. I only recently learned she's dubbed in that (with someone I suppose trying to sound not-too-awesome to make it seem more real), but it's not just the singing. She's not truly musical - she tends to look awkward when she's in musical moments. I love her as a dramatic, even comedic, actress ... but not in musicals. I can live with her very appealing Maria in West Side (and as stated here, Marni Nixon provided vocals), she does fine with "Little Lamb" and we don't need to have a fabulous singer for that song ... but when I watch the strip at the end, I always think -- her vocals are just too flat and pushed. Again, they didn't need a diva singer, but someone who could approximate what Natalie really sounded like but just get closer to the pitch. For DAISY CLOVER, it's WAY too many muscials numbers - dubbed or not. They have her running around like a maniac - I suppose thinking we'd be distracted by the physical and not notice she's not that sort of entertainer. They should have taken a calculated risk and given Liza Minnelli DAISY CLOVER. Liza won the Tony award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1965 for FLORA THE RED MENACE and the show closed that summer. That's the time DAISY would be filming. The character of DAISY is supposed to be 16/17 years old. Natalie Wood was 27. Liza was 19 and much more the "kooky, quirky Tom Boy type" that was needed for DAISY - and obviously she'd shine bright in the musical numbers. Or, better yet, no movie of DAISY CLOVER would be the best idea of all ... instead give Natalie (who got better every few films) something interesting dramatially. She'd have been delightful in BAREFOOT IN THE PARK with Robert Redford (her DAISY co-star) - I think a much better fit for the role than Jane Fonda. Ah, the retroactive casting game. Fun, but pointless.

@@Gary_Jaffe It does make sense. They lowered the key for Rosalind but in the process it made the song to low for Natalie so she had to sing it an octave higher than Rosalind. I've heard that the reason the number was cut was because of a clause in Natalie Wood's contract that stated that any number that turned out to be beyond her vocal capabilities would be cut from the film. I don't know if that's actually true, just some trivia I've come across.

  • @lostvocals8

    @lostvocals8

Kind of. The actual stipulation was that no dubber could be used - they had to use her voice or cut the number. This song was lowered to Roz' key (as were all the songs) forcing poor Natalie to sing (yell) an octave higher. She sounded so bad they had to cut the number, since she refused to be dubbed.

I keep wanting one of the Toreadorables to come out and say "Do you mind? We're trying to sleep." No wonder Sondheim hates this movie, replacing his lyrics with "Plunka-plunka-plunk-plunk." If only Natalie Wood hadn't had to yell. And the "B flat" is a bit cringe-making. This movie's still vastly superior to the Bette Midler remake.

Natalie Wood was so pissed that she was overdubbed by Marni Nixon in West Side Story, yet here's living proof of her lack of capability in that area of performance. Rosalind Russell have put in the years and and one can overlook an older woman, a real "pro" in her voice. Karl Malden holds it together - Jack Klugman played that role with Ethel Merman! Natalie was a great looking girl with her doe eyes. Karl; not so great.

Rosalind Russell couldn't sing, so she was dubbed someone who also couldn't sing, IMO. Natalie Wood could more or less carry a simple tune in her thin little voice, but putting any real emotion into it was beyond her. As a singer, Karl Malden was a great actor. And here they all are in a musical.
