Gypsy - Everything's Coming Up Roses - Rosalind Russell 's own voice

Фильм және анимация

In this number, Roz was dubbed in the released film by Lisa Kirk. In 2005, her own version was released on CD, but that was not her best attempt. This later take makes me wish she could sing a bit better. She gives the song so much more intensity than Lisa, but she's not quite up to the vocal challenges of the song. This is actually made up of multiple takes edited together (not by me). See if you can hear the cuts!
From her autobiography, "Life Is A Banquet." At first I was only to act the part; Rose's singing was dubbed by a professional with a big trained voice. When I heard it, I got sick. "It isn't me," I said. "I'm bad, but I can't stand to hear that. Everybody knows I don't sing operatically, it throws the balance off." Warner Brothers agreed and rescored the picture, and I sang my own part. People still say that I didn't, but that's Roz, and nobody else, as Rose on the soundtrack of Gypsy.
__________________________________
Roz, we love you, but if that's you in the film, then who's that singing in these clips? Ethel? From TCM: Though she had starred in the stage musical "Wonderful Town" ten years earlier, Russell's voice didn't have the power required for the score. After listening to her recording of the numbers, even Russell had to agree that she would need to be dubbed, though she would deny this, too, in her memoirs. Russell's voice was used only for the patter portions of the numbers. For the real singing, Broadway belter Lisa Kirk, who had starred in the original stage production of "Kiss Me, Kate," modulated her voice to a near perfect match for Russell's.

I don't think there's anyone who loves Ms. Russell more than I, but this and other numbers which I've heard make it painfully obvious why her voice wasn't used. All the same, thank you so much for this.

I’m one of the few who is happy she was dubbed! Nearly every song in this musical is sung by rose. Maybe her voice is okay for one or two songs, but hearing her talk-sing an entire show would kill it for me. These famous hits need to be SUNG!

Thanks for this. I'm familiar with the film, but had never heard this. It's so raw and emotional and authentic. Ideally, the role gets a good singer, but I enjoyed this version very much. It makes me wish Ms.Kirk acted it as well as Roz.

@horrorflickguy You're being grossly unfair to the real Mama Rose, Rose Hovick. Gypsy Rose Lee was an ingrate, who (like her sister, June Havoc) owed everything to her mother. The problem is that the musical Gypsy was written during the era of “Momism.” “Momism” was a movement begun by essayist Philip Wylie in 1942, which promoted the hatred of mothers, and which had “legs.” In that context, attacking stage mothers was like shooting fish in a barrel. Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the lyrics to Gypsy, also hated his mother. And the show’s book was written by communist hack, Arthur Laurents, who piggybacked on Momism.

Which is exactly what Rose Hovick was! She definitely had a very dark side to her; this is suggested in Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography "Gypsy" but is very starkly depicted in "Early Havoc", the autobiography of her sister June.

Natalie Wood was about 5' 2" if that - she was very petite. In later scenes, of course, her hair is swept up and she wore heels but overall yes they did a great job with showing her 'aging' from a young girl to a grownup Gypsy Rose Lee in later shots.

Best one. The song loses all of its interest for me without the story Rosalind brings to it. When other people sing it you think, okay that's fun and catchy, but when she is doing it you want to cry while forcing a big smile, facing the darkness head on. It's a more intense experience.

Well, acting-wise, I have to agree with you. It does contain more gut wrenching emotion than Lisa Kirk's overdubbing of it, or however it was ~ finally done .....I assume that they did their best to see how much of the score Roz could handle but Lisa Kirk was called in (I assume) and matched her very closely by singing through a vocal modifier of some sort. I mean really, you wouldn't know it was a dub job since it sounded pretty close to Roz's speaking voice.
