I was acquainted with HK , Toby's Dad. He was a great man. He was so proud of Toby! Some might remember that Toby was uninvited to perform this song on a TV special but Peter Jennings thought the "boot in your ass" line was inappropriate. Toby's response was "he's Canadian isn't he"? And then winked. 😅 That's Toby. He is in remission from cancer and doing fairly well.

The world lost one of the greatest when he passed. He did USO tours in Iraq and Afghanistan every year for the troops. Never paid for them and flew military aircrafts there and back. Said if the soldiers can do it so can I

Toby wrote this song for the troops. He never intended to release it, just sing it to the troops. But a commander told him he had to release it to the people,so he did. No matter how long, no matter where you hide America will always find her justice. Good reaction. ❤

In June of 2002 I was stationed at MacDill AFB Florida, we were, at that time still heavily involved in Middle Eastern Operations. It was announced that President Bush was coming to the base to address the troops and we were to assemble about 3 hours early in one of the hangers to await his arrival, (Hurry up and wait). As we stood in the hanger, the wing CCMSgt came out on the stage and said, may I present country music recording star Toby Keith. We were stunned, I don’t think anybody expected that. He had 1 other guitarist with him, and of course sang “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue”. That day I became a Toby Keith fan, I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.

An American patriot! 11 USO tours, including 240 concerts. More importantly, a great husband , father, friend, and Christian!

Remember this song was Toby's DIRECT RESPONCE to 9/11 This will make it much more clearer for all to understand and appreciate..

Yes, this song was written after Sept 11th, and that was the "suckered punch" he referred to. Toby gives back so much to the troops. Sadly for the last few years he's all but retired as he's battling cancer. 😥

Today passed away in February so RIP

i was stationed in Afghanistan when toby came with the uso tour post 911 he s a true patriot he gives to the troops to this day even with his own health issues god bless him and his family

Toby did a LOT for the military and veterans. God rest his soul. He was a good man.

At first Toby only played this song for the troops until a Marine officer implored him to record it and make it available to the entire nation.

This was written in response to the attacks of September 11th, 2001. He wrote this intending for it only to be played to the troops, but that changed when the Commandant of the Marine Corps asked him to record it and have it played for everyone.

Toby captures the American spirit perfectly in this song, as the daughter sister wife and mother of wartime veterans I really appreciate the message in this song.

American soldier by Toby keith. It’s good to be reminded that not only does the soldier serve but the family sacrifices to.

This song means a lot to US veterans, service personnel and military families…I was Army…and my mother-in-law was inbound over the Atlantic when the planes started crashing into the towers and Pentagon…so it always brings back a lot of memories.

Oh, that must have been frightening for your mother-in-law and all the family. Was her flight rerouted to Canada? Thank you for your service. My dad was retired Air Force. He died at age 66 in 1999 after a long debilitating illness. In a way I’m glad he didn’t live to see 9/11, or what’s happening in our country today.

@@terri2494 yes, she was ended up stuck in Canada until the US reopened borders. It was quite a crazy time.

I drive by his home in Norman OK often and tear up when I see the huge American flag he has out front of his beautiful home. He's facing terrible health issues but still has that Toby mischievous smile. Gotta love him and what he stands for. What you see is what you get.

RIP Toby Keith. We will miss you. Died today from stomach cancer. RIP from a proud Tennessean.

Toby hit over 17 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, and several ships. He performed nearly 300 shows from Afghanistan to Cuba, Djibouti, Guam, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan , etc. You can see they would go where maybe the troops couldn't see a full show, such as performing on the ramp of a parked Chinook helicopter for a couple dozen soldiers. In recognition, the USO honored him with its "Spirit of the USO Award". This song was something they did during those shows, never intending to actually record it but the Commandant of the Marine Corps told him he had to - more people need to hear it and it was his American duty to get it out there.

I knew Bob Neller when he wore a butter bar on Okinawa, fresh from the Basic School. I saw greatness in him then. It's right in the center of his character to order Keith to record this song.

Quite simply, one of the best patriotic songs ever written. No matter how many times I hear it I still get goosebumps, and sometimes shed a tear or two.

We have suffered under the present incompetent Administration, but we will be back bigger and better than ever in 6 months. My Wife is a Canadian. She became a U.S. Citizen a few years back. One of the proudest moments in my life. Tears streamed from my eyes when she took the oath and said the "Pledge of Allegience". Love you guys. much good luck to you both!

Toby is in the battle of his life against stomach cancer. Though he did perform recently and even though he appeared very thin he seems to be doing better. I don't believe he has performed a full concert at this point but he at least did perform one song.

Absolutely love Toby. Most of his songs go to the top of the charts plus he writes his own songs.

There are a handful of celebrities that are extremely pro-military. And I mean pro-military personnel, not pro-American government. These people understand you can support the people putting their life on the line for you without getting into the politics of it. Gary Sinise and Toby Keith are the first modern people that come to my mind. They will always have my respect

"Made in America" is a very high energy video and "American Soldier" is a tribute to american soldiers. Both are really good patriotic songs.

I love his voice so much, and his song writing ability is off the charts! American Soldier is another great song about patriotism, and for some more light, funny songs I would recommend How Do You Like Me Now, I Wanna Talk About Me, and Trailerhood, just to name a few!

In 2002... maybe 2003, ABC had a special 4th of July TV show, and they invited Toby Keith to be on it and do this song. However, they had one requirement. Since the show was going to be on in prime time, they said that he needed to change the line, " 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way". Toby refused and they dropped him from the show. Another network...I think it was Fox, but not 100% certain... built a similar show around Toby, to air at the same time. That show had 4 times as many viewers as the show on ABC.

The Dixie Chicks were touring overseas when this came out and took huge offense to the “boot in your ass” line. They criticized Toby and George Bush heavily from the stage in a foreign country. Caused quite a ruckus as fans were livid. It affected them negatively and after a relatively quiet few years, they changed their name and resumed their careers, but it never really got back to the heights they had achieved before.

The videos for I love this bar and how do you like me now are great, RIP Toby, you will be truly missed but you and your music will live on forever!

You were correct, this was one of the many many patriotic country songs released after 9/11.

The song was written in late 2001, and was inspired by Toby's father's death in March 2001, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States later that year. It was released in May 2002 as the lead single from the album, Unleashed. The reaction was so strong that the Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones told Toby it was his duty as an American citizen to record the song. "It's your job as an entertainer to lift the morale of the troops," Jones said to Toby. "If you want to serve, that is what you can do." In a November 2003 interview with CBS, Toby gave his take on the song: "It wasn't written for everybody. And when you write something from your heart - I had a dad that was a veteran, taught me how precious our freedom is - I was so angry when we were attacked here on American soil that it leaked out of me. You know, some people wept when they heard it. Some people got goose bumps. Some people were emotionally moved. Some cheered, turned their fists in the air."

As a veteran, I really appreciate what Toby has done for veterans. USO trips to visit soldiers overseas, songs celebrating sacrifice. Right now he needs our support as he battles cancer.

I was brought up very patriotic... my Grandfathers served in WWII.. my Dad served outside of war time.. my Uncles served in Vietnam... It hurts my heart when ppl in this country now don't realize how many men and women died and still do for our FREEDOM. I thank all of our service men serving now and all of our Veterans...

This is the second reaction video of yours that I've watched (yes, i am now subscribed) and both were of Toby Keith's. You have to check out his whole catalog over time. He has a funny playful side in his music (How do you like me now, i love this bar, red solo cup, who's your daddy...) and then there's the serious side of him where he shows his true genuine American love and support for military!! Toby was one of, if not the, biggest advocate for American veterans!! He is a huge loss for America, whether you like country music or not. Toby singing my Red white and blue was for every American because that's how most Americans fell. It's a privilege and honor to be a American. Most Americans get it, most from other nations get it but some people just dont understand 9/11. But when it happened it affected every American.

I was deployed to "the sandbox" from September, 2002 until July, 2003. I lived in a tent in the (extremely hot) desert, away from my family of a wife and four children. I can't express how grateful I was to have performers come to our timber built stage to perform for us in the very hot evenings while we enjoyed our maximum of two beers. I was at the very upper edge of age of those in our camp, and the one thing I'll never forget was how magnificent our young servicemembers were. While on the job, they were absolute professionals, and then at night when all congregated under the "Wagon Wheel" they were free to be like all of their peers back home. I was just so gratified to be there with them, and again, God bless the performers who came out to improve morale, they were special.

Him and Trace did so many overseas tours for the troops.

I remember when I was about 13 years old, I first saw a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. On the front of the newspaper, at school in my country. It's always heartbreaking to see the stories from that day. Even though it has passed It's been more than 20 years.

9/11/2001 It sort of amazes me when I watch these "first time hearing" this, and no one remembers this song. The Dixie Chicks publicly denounced this song. Toby responded, of course. This song was written right after 9/11. It really consolidated the armed forces, and he toured the battle theaters. I love it. There is an Air Force dedication of this song too, really good. The Scot knew what this song was about, as well as the Swede. Anyway, I hope I added some context.

Another great song is American Soldier. it tells the story of the Military family!

Got to see him perform in 2005 in Iraq. Just him on a stage with a guitar and he sounded as good as any recorded edition. He's the real deal. Great video.

This was one of a few songs that became an anthem for both the military and Americans as a whole post 9/11.

My great grandfather who passed away fee months ago at 101 years old, was 1 on the first sent to Omaha beach and he walked through France was in the battle of the bulge.
