To Wipe or Not to Wipe: Masah Over Socks? | Ask Shaykh YQ #34

A number of our Muslim brothers and sisters work in a non-Islamic environment. In addition, we also live in a time where Islam is viewed as a strange religion. Praying at your workplace can become a challenge. In order to perform Wudhu quickly, we tend to ask if we can simply wipe over our socks instead of taking them off, and putting them in the sink.

Imam Abu Hanafi later changed his opinion and followed the opinion of his students which allowed the wiping over thick socks, thick socks are socks which are considered non see through and cover the ankles. Abu Hanifa RAH Infact did this in later time of life. As long as the water does not seek through the initial wipe it is valid. It does not have to be leather

May Allah reward the sheik and everyone involved in the production of this video and all videos which help the ummah follow the path of the prophet (saw). Is the following scenario permissible? In the state of wudhu put on cotton socks and normal (below ankle) shoes in the morning. Then wipe over shoes when performing wudhu for dhuhr, then take off shoes (keeping socks on) to pray Dhuhr. Finally performing wudhu by wiping over socks to pray Asr.

7:29 regarding wiping over impermeable socks, must be thick and able to walk many kilometres in 9:31 modern scholars - fine to do masah over cotton socks. Evidence - hadith on doing masah upon jawrab 9:31 goal is to make ease. Defeats the purpose to add conditions that cause hardship. 9:31 YQ opinion - permissible to do masah on jawrab. Custom back then was to wear leather socks. Cloth socks were not. Prophet saws didn't add conditions himself.

Unnecessary conditions which has no basis making life hard for the people. "The Deen is ease." "Make things easy for the people, don't make it difficult for them....." (Bukhari) Even in the hanbali madhab the condition is that the cotton sock should not be see through, which most of the socks aren't, they aren't see through. May Allah grant us the tawfeeq to be a source of ease and comfort for others and not a source of difficulty and harshness which causes a burden/trouble for the people. P.S: Who is op, ie?

I think this has to do with the traveller who will perform his/her salat wearing their shoes/boots. Just make sure your footwear is free from filth that would render ritual purity negatively at the time and place of prayer. For example, you stepped into something nasty; clean your shoes nicely and then perform masah.

There are multiple opinions on the 24 hours. Example scenario: you took your wudhu at 6.00am, break your wudhu at 8.30am, retook your wudhu at 2pm Opinion 1) The 24 hours start from 6.00am from the time of "proper wudhu" Opinion 2) The 24 hours start from 8.30am upon breaking the wudhu and entering minor impuritiy Opinion 3) The 24 hours start from 2pm upon renewing the wudhu with the first instance of socks wiping. Maybe Shiek YQ can elaborate on this as I heard this from Malaysian based scholars when discussing the same issue. If i recall correctly Opinion 3 was the strongest but maybe somebody more qualified can clarify. TYVM

Sheikh Yasser, you can't say that the haddeth mentioning prophet SAWS wiped over jawrab is authentic. Only Al thirmidhi, ibn hibban, Ahmad Shaker, and Al Albani said it's authentic. Abu Dawood remained silent and all other giant people of hadeeth, Abdul rahman bin Mahdi, Ali ibn Almadeeni, Yahya ibn maaen, Bukhari, Muslim, ibn khozaymah , these are bigger in knowledge than the the 4 that Said uts authentic, they said it's a weak hadeeth, so that haddeth is not a proof. However, the strong proof is the doing of sahaba, more than 10 are reported to have wiped over non-leather socks. Also, thick socks (non transparent, and that stay in the feet and can walk with) is correct. Thank you

The narration by Mughira about wiping over the socks is not authentic, and it might be a shadhdh version of the authentic khuff hadith. That doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to wipe over your socks. I just wanted to point this out. Here is a discussion on that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6ic3K6td8etj9Y.html (I don’t agree with his view on no limit for wiping, and I highly highly doubt his view on not need to evolution before putting in the heat, but it’s a good discussion on the narration)

Why does the sock have to be above the ankle? Is there a hadith forbidding wiping over socks that are below the ankle? Or is this an extra condition made up by the ulama?

  • @MuhammadIsmailAPX

I think it has to do with the fact that the Quranic verse regarding the acts of wudu explicitly mention 'And wash your feet up to the ankles.' So the condition of the sock covering the ankles is directly derived from this. This is my personal observation.

Any genuine believer in the Quran would always accept the Quranic evidence as the only absolute uncorrupted truth. However, many Muslims sadly place the hadith above the Quran. This being the case, let us show here what their hadith says about the prophet forbidding the writing of his own hadith: "The prophet said: "Do not write down anything from me except the Quran. Whoever wrote other than that should delete it." [Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Number 7147, also Ahmed, Vol. 1, Page 171] Abu huraira said that the prophet said, "The 'Ummam' (nations/peoples) that preceded you have gone astray when they wrote books and upheld them besides God's Scripture" (Ahmed Ibn Hanbal). "Abu Huraira said: The messenger of God came to us while we were writing his sayings and said: "What is it you are writing?" we said "sayings (hadith) we hear from you messenger of God" he said, "A book other than God's book?" then Abu Huraira said, "so we gathered what we had written and burnt it all" (Taqyeed Al-Ilm, by Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdady) also (Oloom Al-Hadith, by Ibn Salah). The question that arises, after reading such words from the prophet, is whether the prophet regarded his personal words to be revelation, or in any way divinely inspired? The fact that the prophet forbade his followers from writing down his sayings and personal words, confirms that he did not regard these to be divinely inspired and that he regarded the Quran to be the only inspired revelation. To counter this strong argument, the hadith scholars explain that it is true that the prophet prohibited the writing of his own hadith, but they quickly add that this command only applied to the very early years of the revelation! They explain that the prophet gave such instructions because the Quran was in its early days of revelation and that the prophet was worried that his own sayings would be mixed with the Quran! The following points expose this claim: 1- When the revelation first started coming to the prophet he was in Mecca. This continued for thirteen years before the prophet immigrated to Medina to escape the persecution of the idolatrous Meccan leaders. During these 13 difficult years, documenting what the messenger said in conversation was not an issue of prime matter. The believers at the time, who were still a small persecuted minority, were more concerned with securing their personal safety and the safety of the prophet. According to historic records, the prohibition by the prophet to write his sayings took place in Medina around the seventh year A.H. which would be 21 years after the beginning of the revelation. It follows that the claim that the prohibition applied only to the early days of the Quranic revelation becomes invalid, simply because the prohibition by the prophet was not issued in the early days of the revelation, but after 21 years. 2- When we analyse the claim that the prohibition was meant only for the early days, so that it would not be mixed up with the Quran, we note another serious problem. In Sura 15, verse 9 we read that God gives a promise to preserve the Quran against all corruption. Sura 15 is a Meccan Sura, and thus it was revealed before the immigration to Medina and the subsequent prohibition of writing the hadith. The pressing question here is: Did prophet Muhammad not trust in God's promise, and indeed ability, to preserve the Quran? If Muhammad did believe God's promise, which is what we expect a prophet would do, would he still be worried that his own hadith would be mixed up or confused with God's revelation, which was preserved by God? 3- The claim that the prohibition by the prophet concerned only the early days of the Quranic revelation does not explain why all the four Khulafa Al-Rashedeen (Abu Bakr, Omar, Osman and Ali) all maintained the prohibition after the death of the prophet and allowed no one to write any hadith about the prophet. 1- Al-Sayedah Aisha (one of the wives of the prophet) said that her father (Abu Bakr) gathered 500 hadith from people and burnt them all. (Tazkerat Al-Hafez Al-Zahaby part 1, page 5). 2- Orwa Ibn Al-Zubair said that Omar prohibited the writing of any hadith from the prophet and declared "There shall be no book besides God's Book" (Ga' me Bayan Al-ilm, part 1, page 65). 3- Both Abu Bakr and Omar used to advise the people to avoid telling tales about the prophet. In one of his speeches, Abu Bakr addressed the people saying: "you tell stories about the prophet and you dispute among one another in the details. The people who will come after you will undoubtedly dispute even more, therefore do not tell any tales about the prophet. If you should be asked, say between us and you is God's Book, therefore make halal (lawful) what is halal in the Book and prohibit what is prohibited therein." (Tazkerat Al-Hafez Al-Zahaby). 4- When Osman became the ruler he maintained the prohibition. The same continued under the leadership of Ali. In one of his speeches Ali said: "I urge any of you who possesses any writings about the prophet to destroy it, verily, the people went astray before you when they upheld the teachings of their scholars and abandoned God's Book" (Sunann Al-Darami). 5- The prohibition of writing the hadith stood for a period of two centuries after Hijra. Among the six hadith collections we have today, labelled 'sahih' (authentic), is Bukhari's collection. Bukhari was first to be born out of the six collectors, born in the year 194 A.H. and his collection was the first to be documented of the six. Once again, this confirms that the prohibition to write hadith continued long after the prophet died.

I would politely have to disagree. Tahara is essiantial, majoroty of books of hadith start with taharat and ablution, even before ibadat i.e worship. If the masah is not done on socks that dont meet the criteria, then salaah will not count. If a peraon leads in this state all the muktadees salaah will not count. Durispidence is just as important as aqeedah etc. Period

@@fatimaachy5764 You are correct these are also important issues we are faced with, and need to tackle. Our religion is split in to 5 categories. 1, iman (creed) 2, ibadat (worship) 3, muamalat (dealing with business) 4, muasharat (how we live in soceity) 5, akhlaq (good conduct) First two are huqookullah (Allahs rights) and the reaminder are huqookull ibaad (mankinds rights). All these branches go hand in hand. To worship and not help mankind is not sufficient, similarly helping others and forgetting the creator and not worshipping him is futile. We muslims unfortunately fail to implement all fields mentioned above. The key point is all topics are important, depending on time, location etc one may be important than the other, and to say that the sheikh is talking about something that is not important, in my opinion is an incorrect statement. All issues need to be addresed, discussed and finally need to be implemented upon.
