Two weeks after Fischer's sensational 6-0 shutout streak in the Fischer - Taimanov Candidates Quarterfinal (1971), at Vancouver, he met at Temple Buell College, Denver, Colorado USA to play a 10-game candidates match against Bent Larsen starting on July 6, 1971. Larsen had qualified from the Larsen - Uhlmann Candidates Quarterfinal (1971). Fischer said to a reporter before the match: "Been traveling for a year, match to match. I need a personal life. I'm not as narrow as some people think, you know. But right now all I think of is the world championship. Chess is my whole life" ... "(Larsen)'s good. But I think I'm the best around. I don't say that to brag. I think it's true. I love the game - and I hate the Russians because they've almost ruined it. They only risk the title when they have to, every three years. They play for draws with each other but play to win against the Western masters. Draws make for dull chess, wins make for fighting chess." (1)
And fighting chess is what Fischer delivered. After six consecutive wins he dispensed with Denmark's best, repeating another amazing 6-0 performance. Preparing to face Boris Spassky in a World Championship match, he would first meet the winner of the Petrosian - Korchnoi Candidates Semifinal (1971). This turned out to be Petrosian, hence the Fischer - Petrosian Candidates Final (1971).

    How could I be called an excellent player? I found the first bishop move in the first game with Larson, didn't bother looking for the second move he presented. I learned chess from the rules, never read a chess book, and only played chess about 60 games with a neighbor over a teenage summer, 50 years ago, and three or four games at age 37. That teen summer I won a lot but usually my opponent blundered into a knight fork or a pin on his queen. I find chess at boring so I don't play, everyone who plays now could beat me handily because there are so many people so dedicated studying, memorizing, and learning chess. I can't even remember family birthdays, much less chess openings other than the two middle pawns. 30 years ago age 37 I drew a couple of games with a chess club guy who claimed he was rated 1800, after losing the first game to fool's mate. I don't think I have played since, but agad's commentary and the Fischer games are compelling, and entertaining, so thank you agadmotor.

    A rook is a type of bird. The piece is shaped something like a salt shaker with a circular top. A circle is a glorified oval. So to catch a bird with salt on the tail, it is possible that it would be ovalrooked.

    Hey Agadmator! I started watching your videos today and I absolutely love them. Because of all the games I watched you review I was finally able to beat a level 6 computer (1600 ELO). Over the span of 2 months I lost 156 times in a row to it...I was up a pawn and had a queen, but the computer had his queen and two rooks. Was able to put him in check and he had to guard his king with a rook, so after I took it his king was trapped. When I saw the words "Checkmate" come up I was beyond happy. This is a completely small victory, but man does it feel good. Thank you so much for the videos.

    @MettaForYou

    He was so dominent because his opponents were bad compared to today. Ben Larsen's highest rating was 2660 elo. Today there are 46 grand masters with over 2700 rating. Now Carlsen is competing against 2700-2800 players, of course he can't be as dominent as Fischer was.

    +MettaForYou a better rationalization would be that Elo is not a measure of talent but of how well versed in chess theory you are. It is why Fischer lost interest in chess, because it became a game of memorization instead of talent. Of course, the further on we move in chess theory the less about talent the game becomes and the more about mental endurance it becomes

    Great analysis! Love your videos! Although when Fischer moved the king to e3 I don't think he was trying to push the pawn, but to force Larsen's king in the corner by blocking the f2 square.

    It seems to me that there are also some psychological factors playing a role in those candidate matches with Fischer. He is playing so good, making virtually no mistakes, that even Top-GMs like Taimanov and Larsen are getting afraid of Fischer and make little mistakes, on which Fischer of course capitalizes immediately. So he seems to be even stronger than he already is.

    love every great game by bobby fischer and the great analysis done in this series- as a fellow chess enthusiast- i had an idea to help eliminate book openings in chess to make the game more open and interesting, that you could make a rule saying that no pawns can be moved on the first 2 moves by both players. And also that you can't move the same piece twice on the first 2 moves. Which means that you would have to move both knights first or a knight and the rook beside it. Just an idea that can be tried out and experimented with. Maybe someone has tried this approach before. I don't know. maybe it's a good idea and maybe it isn't. maybe only top level players would find this rule useful to use as a diversion from the same book openings being played over and over.

    With this games starts the phenomena known as "Fischer Fear". Taimanov might have been a lessor opponent for Fischer but Bent Larsen was not. I was around then and word started spreading of Fischer invincibility. By the end of the Larsen match there was no doubt about Fischer being in a league of his own.
