TN v Joseph Ray Daniels Murder Trial Day 3 - Agt Steven Kennard-Non-Custodial Interview

Watch Live: Joseph Ray Daniels Murder Trial in Death of Autistic Son
Witnesses: Det Sarah McCartney, Agt. Steven Kennard - TN Bureau Of Investigation
This video includes recording of Defendant riding with police to show them where he search for his son.
Charges:
1. First-degree murder for the death of Joe Clyde Daniels
2. First-degree murder in perpetuation of a felony
3. Aggravated child abuse
4. Initiating a false report.
5. Tampering with evidence
Joseph Ray Daniels, 31, stands trial in the alleged murder of his missing son Joe Clyde Daniels, 5.
Defendant Daniels called 911 on April 4, 2018 to say his son “escaped.”
“We cannot find him,” he said in audio obtained by WKRN.
But he ended up confessing to beating baby Joe to death, saying the child had peed on the floor, authorities said.
As seen on video, Daniels broke down in tears while wearing a shirt labeled “Super Dad.”
“I was just so angry with him,” he said. Asked how many times he hit baby Joe, he said a “couple” of times while the boy was crying.
Baby Joe was on the autism spectrum and non-verbal.
At first, defendant Daniels said he put the body in a remote area, but when investigators did not find Joe, Daniels claimed he put the remains in a pond. Again, they did not find the body, and Joe remains missing to this day.
Daniels’ defense has argued that the confession was coerced. He is charged with first-degree murder, child abuse, aggravated child abuse causing serious bodily injury, child neglect, filing a false report, and tampering or fabricating evidence.
The boy’s mother Krystal Daniels is also charged with aggravated child abuse, child neglect, filing a false report, and tampering or fabricating evidence. She allegedly admitted to being at the home when Joseph Daniels beat the child to death, but like her co-defendant, she recanted the story, saying it was coerced.
A 2019 jailhouse call showed Joseph Daniels claiming it was Krystal who killed Joe by smothering him with a pillow. But as far as authorities are concerned, it was he who ended the child’s life.

IMO, there are 3 realistic possibilities: 1) The defendant killed his son. (Doesn’t mean it was committed in the manner he conf too) 2) His wife killed the child (which almost certainly he would know) 3) He locked the child out, like he said in 1 of the confessions, in the middle of the night in a thunderstorm. A 5 y/o autistic child alone in the dark, who is terrified of thunder, w/no shoes in freezing cold rain. There r numerous things that could have resulted in his death-inclement weather, drowning, dehydration, predators (people/animal). List goes on & on. BUT if he did this, he’s absolutely as responsible for his death as if he beat him to death.

@@DOLfirst Anything is possible. But that said, children with sensory issues, who are on the spectrum, tend to find loud noises distressing (it was thundering), often struggle w/textures (meaning he almost certainly wouldn’t have willingly gone out in rain & cold without shoes on-I would be shocked if he willingly walked on grass, gravel, mud etc barefoot) Again, anything is possible. But the 3 options r most likely IMO.

@@maryb6672 In the interview the dad said that Joe wasn't bothered by the rain. He did state that Joe had a fascination for water. "..locked the bathroom door and ran the tub til it overflowed". Maybe the dad DID put him out in the rain but in the interview he just sounds like he is being honest and forthcoming to me. 🤷‍♂️ I hope the boy is found alive. When I was young a little girl in the next town was kidnapped and murdered. Everyone was "THE FATHER DID IT! HE LOOKS CREEPY" The father didn't do it after all. If this same thing happened today there is no doubt in my mind that people on the internet would have him drawn and quartered immediately. I try to keep this in mind. It's not always the spouse/parent/a loved one who commits a crime and I will always hope that a missing child will be found alive.

@@DOLfirst Oh absolutely! I don’t disagree that it’s not always the parents. And I’ve definitely seen cases were defendants were railroaded by police. And false confessions absolutely occur! Of course, it would be incredible if the child could be found alive. But statistically, it’s most often the parents & in the small percentage that it’s not, unfortunately by far the vast majority of those children are killed within the 1st day. Not trying to be negative. Just saying that realistically, the odds are low that he is still alive. (Even if the father didn’t kill the child) Guess we’ll know more when we’re able to see the “confession”.

From my understanding, when an autistic person bolts, it's due to a fight or flight response, usually brought about by sensory overload or overwhelming emotions. It's the same stimuli that might lead another autistic person to stim, or to hide, or to melt down. The important point, is that the person is in a high state of agitation when this happens. They are typically not able to concentrate well enough to form plans or carry out complex behaviours like moving furniture to reach and open a padlock, especially if these are skills that would be difficult even under ideal conditions. That's something a neurotypical child might do if they're sad or angry, but it's not something an autistic child would normally do if they're in crisis and wanting to bolt.
