Slide the metal tab towards the cup until it compresses the two arm together against the hinge on the cup to lock it in place. At least that’s how it works on other pots and pans that I have, I don’t have that particular one.

I thought about these for a while, but ended up going for the Pathfinder Titanium Water bottle and cup mostly because I like the way it fits the backpack. These kits all look good though and I would lean towards the Pathfinder Canteen Set because of the extra cup. Thanks Dr. Ernie for another informative video.

The slider on that mess kit slides down to prevent accidental releasing of the handle from the pot when clenching the handle, but apparently not so much to keep the pot from flipping up, or rotating back from the handle. As for the Pathfiner set not having a bail handle, the Boundless Voyage (which I have) does have two clips on each pot and includes a bail wire so you can hang either pot.

The problem with the handle for the pot is that you need to slide the lock from the handle area towards the pot. This will stiffen the handle so it does not pop off. Hope this helps.

I purchased the Pathfinder kit when it first came out. Titanium is handy for long distance hikers concerned about pack weight, (and for old folks like me)! With a bad back, and old knees, I try to keep my pack as light as possible. One of the things I really like about the Pathfinder kit is the fact the lid has drain holes, so I can cook pasta, etc., and easily drain off the excess water. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Great video. This is what I found works great for me. Heavy Cover mess kit for boiling water, cooking soups and stews, then I have the heavy cover canteen kit for drinking coffee, tea, or any other. Canteen just for water too. Then to finish my cooking gear I have a usgi mess kit which I use as my fry pan and lid as plate for eating. This set up for me works really good covering all bases and really light weight.

I love - and own since many years - the Keith kit. The Keith canteen cup is very practical in handling due to the extra wire in the one handle, and very easy to clean after use. I'm not interested in the other samples you showed since both, the edged shaped Pathfinder kit as well as the unneccessarily complicatedly shaped Heavy Cover kit, are not so easy to clean in case you use these things for cooking, and during cooking the shape of these other kits might turn out to be unpractical for stirring etc.. If you use the canteen cups only for boiling water and maybe have your tea out of it, it might not make a big difference, but for eerything else I want to have it as Keith as possible ;-)

Earnie, OK, I own the Keith and the Pathfinder sets. My personal favorite is my Keith 40.6 ounce round bottle with 2 Toaks 750ml pots (no bails) and one pot lid in a 500 denier nylon bag. One pot with lid nest on the bottle bottom with the second pot over the top of the bottle inside the nylon bag. When empty I store a UCO titanium spork, Soto Amicus burner, Sawyer Mini filter with one liter bag rolled separately inside the bottle.

The handle lock clip is designed to slide towards the pot to prevent squeezing too hard and releasing the mechanism. The large pot is made to sit inside the small pot, yes I know but it does fit. The lid then sits quite snugly on the large pot.

I have the Heavy Cover canteen kit and mess kit and love them both... But, if your on a tight budget and need a complete kit... then maybe this is a better idea. I recently acquired a BCB crusader mk2 set. Thats a bomb proof plastic canteen, a plastic cup, an aluminum hard anodized pot and an aluminum pot stand that will accept a trangia. Then I saw a KZread video where the videographer substituted the plastic cup with a BCB crusader mk1 stainless pot. This is a really good setup and even after adding the stainless cup you are still under $80! I guess one of these days I need to start making my own videos... Thanks Ernie... always love your videos especially all the coffee videos, ever tried nutmeg in your coffee?

For those who timed it right, the Pathfinder Ti set was marked down to $125. I got mine last year and do like it. Haven't been impressed by the carry case (snap broke), but it has otherwise been a great set. I find I leave the included cup at home. It's a weird form factor for me for hot drinks. Others may like it. I just find I don't. I prefer my Toaks 450ml cup with DIY reflectix cozy. Just my preference. Others may find otherwise.

Looks like the detachable handle on the 3rd canteen set is to hang it over a fire for cookin/boiling. Detach and slide it in vertically from the top, should lock into the lower cut-out to hang by the handle from a tripod or just such. Just a thought.

The Heavy Cover Military mess kit offers a lot more as far as having the ability of cooking two different items at one time. It's a time proven military kit that a lot of nations use. Finally they have one in Titanium. The slider on the handle is to keep you from squeezing the handle and it coming loose as you use it. Grant you , no canteen with it but that's why they make Smart Water Bottles. One additional benefit is that you can put all sorts of items inside it. I'm thinking , including the lid. ( the lid should fit inside the bail with the cup on top )

I bought the heavy cover mess kit and the canteen kit. The heavy cover cup and canteen do FIT INSIDE the mess kit. Granted the lid doesn’t sit balanced on top. I use and old British BBC carrying case that can with the osprey kit. It’s slightly larger than the American canteen kit and fits the set-up perfectly. I can nest the canteen and cup inside with a camp towel to quite rattling noises.

Next question, one of these cooksets vs a titanium cup/pot with maybe a smaller titanium cup (or different material) and maybe a metal water bottle as a diy set. Perhaps this could be a mix of materials to show where each has its benefits. 16oz deli container can handle boiling hot soup so maybe a nice lightweight cup alternative.

Don't trust thin plastic to handle boiling water in temperatures well below freezing. I carry stainless steel bottles in the winter. I had an old poly Nalgene break once. Of course, that was the old opaque white bottle. I can melt and boil water from snow next to an open fire, saving fuel in northern winter weather with the stainless bottles.

The third canteen with the locking handle is upside down on the reverse and the small cup should go on the bottom when stored and the lid on top of the main pot. You can see the locking handle is in L shape to fit the flat bottom of the small cup when unfolded.

Titanium pots work great if you want to boil water, but be ready to stir often and all the way to the bottom if you want to cook. If you can live with that (like me) then titanium works well. Aluminum is even lighter than titanium, just not quite so strong, but aluminum pots work very well for cooking since aluminum conduct heat very well.

  • @anhatur

    @anhatur

    2 жыл бұрын

I have troubles burning aluminium pans as well. And think it’s related to being so thin it doesn’t spread the heat very well. You get a small area of a pan or pot hot quite fast, but not so much the rest of it. So the only cure, really, is a thicker and heavier material. So I carry a heavy pan if I can, but often go for the thin titanium one. And use a wide burner and a windscreen all around to spread the heat. It works too, you just have to be careful.

For those who want a comparison with the Boundless Voyage Canteen kit, I've had it for quite a while and that's been my go-to ever since. It's pretty much what the Pathfinder kit is, with the addition of hook and chain system (that's really light weight mind you) that you can attatch to hang the kit over a fire. Other then that, and it's tiny attachment points, I think it's the exact same thing. Pretty solid and worth the purchase. :)

Yeah, slide toward the pot and the tab should stop the handle springing in and releasing. I'm sure you get that now, however many comments it is later. So... Do you think the weight savings are worth the cost? Trail bling is nice, but is that all they're worth over the stainless steel options? I steer clear of aluminium where I can, I'm not worried about the leaching I just find it's too easy to damage. Steel might be less prone to burning and sticking when cooking although I tend not to cook much in my titanium pots that would stick anyway. That really just leaves price and weight to separate them, and I've not been convinced that my wanting them is enough to justify the monies required. Good of you to make that sacrifice for us to know, so what do you think on whether it's really worth the coin?

Liked the review. Titanium has its place in the cook-kit world. That said... being selective on gear choices with respect to utilization optimization is the blueprint needed for closer examination. Here in Alaska for example. Both of these 2" mouthed canteens are total losers for several reasons. A wide mouth would make them much more suitable. Geometry regarding both of the canteen kits is also an issue... these do not provide as good efficiency or as much versatility, simplicity, and handiness vs. round designs. Cleaning is also made more difficult. While I get the nostalgia of these 'militaria-based' concepts... they are just not as lets say 'well rounded', efficient, adaptable, and simple as round or cylindrical shapes. If/when I go for Ti (anything)... I will be very selective on what it is, why (ie. attributes other than just lightweight), and how I will want to use it. Out of all the kits here --- My preference would be the larger kit without canteen; and as you pointed out be creative and store stuff inside it. I agree tho' --- seems like the extra lid was an afterthought addition and not quite thought out.

I have the Keith set, and use the cup more for heating water for tea, chocolate and bagged foods than I use it to drink from. And only drink coffee in the morning, so if I’m on an overnighter I bring a wooden bowl as well, as those deep cups aren’t the easiest to eat from. The wood is a much better insulator as well, bad for cooking but good for your lips and good for keeping your food hot. And then I use the bowl for coffee as well. Problem solved.

What kind (or brand) bowl do you use? I’ve been looking at kuksa’s but their size is mainly too small. I’d love any tips!

Heavy Cover handle: If you remove it and then insert the short bent up part up into the bracket on the back of the cup, will that lock it into place?

E... Please answer me this one question, can Titanium be made to be NON STICK like stainless steel can be made to fry an egg? I know stainless steel can, but I don't own any titanium samples to test this challenge or question. within reason of course because stainless steel in not carbon steel by any means...lol I'm serious even cast iron has sticking issues if not done correctly and Teflon is a joke when well used on a campfire.

Marsha, Marsha , Marsha, Titanium ,Titanium, Titanium... Sorry just reminds me of that. Titanium is tough metal to work with, the metal shop in the basement were I used to work, they used to work on that stuff for weeks, it has a distinct stinky stench, when cutting, guess that is why no level marking? Very hard metal? I'm not into Titanium, too $$$, for me, but I prefer that metal canteen, any metal over plastic. In a lost of everything else, you have a spark, can find water, have the metal canteen you can at least boil water. Deal breaker for me in some of those modern military mess kits are those plaster water containers. I do like the Heavy Cover Military Style Mess Kit. Seems well thought out.

Very expensive perzonally could not justify all that on one item. Try stainless steel, does same job not much beavier. I use usa type canteen and cup made in sweden. Tbe otber bcb crhsader both are good and gives yoh extra water capacity if you take both. Water being tbe heaviest item 1 kg per litre.

I love the light weight of titanium, but I find that it has a pretty serious drawback. For example, I came across a titanium pot with some kind of burn in the bottom, which I could not get rid of. I was afraid I was going to destroy it by trying to get the blemish out. Talking to an REI rep, he said that titanium has a coating. I think this might be that food burns easily in titanium and the deterioration of the coating may have caused this. Because of this, I had rather use stainless steel cookware despite the heavier weight. What are your thoughts about this? Thanks.

5" collapsible SS steamer basket(ten or less cost) will fit in those/open just enough for use. Just keep an eye on the water. 14cm, 3/4" or more deep water boils on out fairly fast. blah blah....a 3" X 1" SS cookie cutter will nest inside the basket. Below steamer it gives another half inch for water if anal of steaming. Plus one can slam flattened dough for biscuits. ~ Zebra Billy pots are near a work of art. Zebra should spot weld a ring for pouring, but, I'll be damned if I'll drill holes in the included bowl to steam. (-:

The problem with the titanium set is its hard to clean out when you get mineral buildup. Just get a large mouth single walled water bottle and nesting cup for a fraction of the price.

Oh jeez. You literally said that the Pathfinder gear is rebranded stuff that is more expensive than the generic stuff. We both know it was likely made in the same factory (in China) as the generics. If we're still buying Chinese, why not shout out the cheaper product? I was a professional chef for years, and I still find your obsession with cookware odd. I also don't exactly get your obsession with ultra light weight stuff, since you seem to be a relatively strong healthy man. Meh, you do you, but I'd love to see more reviews on stuff that isn't for cooking.
