    that's correct, the ship was one of the first to have "mood lighting"...the grand staircase dome had floodlights behind it at night...thats why you see them shut off and spark when the dome breaks and water surges in. The dining room had light boxes behind the windows to also make the room brighter, because it was on D deck, pretty low inside the ship.

    apart from the big light in the center, the dome above the grand staircase had no other light scources (exept the sun ofcourse). they had it wrong in the 1997 movie. (scource; Titanic Honor and Glory)

    @@kid_with_a_piano I believe they took several liberties regarding electric lighting. Some would say there is not enough evidence the dining room tables had those little lamps, since Olympic didn't sport them. Also, the boat deck is too brightly lit in the movie, even the funnels' bases are floodlit, although survivors testified it was all dark and confusing during the evacuation.

    @@dean1039 That's not entirely true tho! The first class dining room was massive, stretching a big part of the ship. It's said that the dining room started flooding around 1:30 am in the morning and did not have enough time to flood completely, before the breakup around 2:15 am. Therefore people saw the dining room chairs in the wreck field and I believe there are some photo's of a recovery ship with some on the chairs on their deck.

  • @leodefine86

    They should have kept the Lovejoy scene, it would make much more sense in the continuity of the movie. We see the lovers running in the dinning room and right after it cuts to the entire room flooded in a metter of few seconds, and it also leaves the audience wondering why Lovejoy is all blooded later in the sinking.

    @Soloso143 The dining room had a double wall. When you see the ship from the outside, you'll notice portholes that are paired in groups of two or three. That was the dining room windows, during the day they would let light in, but at night there was lightbulbs behind the windows.

  • @sifridbassoon

    @sifridbassoon

    2 жыл бұрын

    ah, you just answered a question i've had for a long time. That sequence seemed to take place during the day because there was light coming in through the windows. Also (as I recall) the same things in the scene when Jack and Rose are running through the first class lounge(?) and they see Andrews leaning against the fireplace. Although it might have been more historically accurate to have the lightening, I kinda wish Cameron would have left the light out. Having those rooms lighted made them feel very airy and spacious. If he had not used the "external lighting," it would have made the scenes more claustrophobic, with the feeling that the safe spaces were shrinking and time was running out. But that is only nitpicking. All of the sinking effects were masterful.

    That was place where the dishes fell out is actually just aft (toward the stern) of the 1st class dining room on D deck, If you were heading aft from the 1st class dining room it would be: 1st class pantry, 1st & 2nd class galley, 2nd class pantry, and 2nd class dining room.

    @@aegonthedragon7303 ^ It’s not entirely improbable that she did get the cup of tea she asked her personal maid for. The maid seemed to move quickly to run back to their stateroom and turn on the heat as Ruth had asked and tea could probably still be gotten from any trolley or galley around. There might’ve even been a heater of some kind in the stateroom. And even if the maid had to make use of the first class dining saloon, it hadn’t begun flooding yet by the time Ruth asked for tea. She’d asked for tea not too long after the ship’s engines stopped after hitting the iceberg. So there was still “time” for things before the panic really hit and the boats were quickly offloaded. Though of course there’s always the pretty good chance that the maid got lost in the scuffle and panic and things were not available, and by the time she got back, Ruth was already in a lifeboat. Ruth’s maid did not survive. Of course Ruth really didn’t understand (among other things) the peril of the situation..

    This shows what happens to the plates and furniture when the ship sank - most plates broken down when the ship go down but some did survive and a few ended up in a museum or disrespectfully sold off like at a auction in London this weekend! I think most furniture did survive being sunk but did not last too long in the water. When the ship sunk many beds, tables and chairs go down quickly - cloths would disappear over time in the sea except the boots and shoes victims worn.

    The Titanic's dining saloon did not have table lamps and who knows whether the windows on both sides of the room and the reception room for that matter were lit up. The dining saloon was I believe being reset for breakfast by the crew when the iceberg struck. Surely though only the overhead lights would've needed to be in use.
