    3:46 There's no firm evidence that Gigantic was the original name for Britannic aside from an early advert, but the publishers of those kinds of adverts, if they didn't have a confirmed name, would essentially guess the name of a ship based on rumors/hearsay. All of Harland and Wolff's records of the ship dating back to 1911 refer to the ship as Britannic. Or at least that's what the book The Unseen Britannic by Simon Mills claims.

    I'm curious what makes you subscribe to the "Gigantic" name. Apparently records show Britannic in 1911. Some say it was changed because of Titanic, others say because of rising Patriotism with the coming of WWI. And sometimes people mention the 3 larger german ships being built that made the name Gigantic on a much smaller ship just look silly. It would be interesting to see your take on it

    I also don't think J.P Morgan was so anger that he decided to finance construction of the Olympic Class ships as result. White Star Line knew about the Lusitania and Mauretania in 1902 before their keels were even laid and it makes naturally sense that they would want to compete with Cunard as well as the Germans to dominate passenger trade. It was like Pespi and Coke Cola, but I don't view it as vengeful, it was just maritime business.

When I and my brother were searching our family tree he found our great uncle's war documents. At the top right it says Sailed On and the name was Carpathia. • @TechnologicallyTechnical

    @TechnologicallyTechnical

    5 жыл бұрын

    +Doug Ross It's smart of you to keep a skeptical mind, because you're right, there's no written evidence from Harland and Wolff/White Star Line regarding Britannic being called Gigantic. All of their official records for the ship refer to it as Britannic. The myth comes from a legitimate advertisement for the ship calling it Gigantic. However, advertisers from the time would frequently make mistakes. The official name of the ship wasn't known to the public at the time, so rumor/hearsay was all they had to rely on when making the advertisement. They made the same mistake when advertising the Oceanic from 1899, calling it Gigantic as well. But because the advertisement is legitimate and is from 1911/1912, it's able to trick a lot of historians, hence why the myth is so widespread and so infrequently debunked.
