The reason they put plastic grips on the pistol is because the original Military 1911A1 models all had plastic grips.

Also a few of the Vietnam era ones had them too when they had to replace the wood grips they replaced them with plastic.

On my Springfield Armory GI m1911a1, I replaced the very nice wood grips with the proper plastic grips for historical accuracy. I noticed you use a "tea cup" grip while firing. That could be dangerous in the unlikely event of a catastrophic failure. The explosion would take the path of least resistance, which would be the bottom of the magazine (and your hand).

@@dirtydan8342 Hi Dan. I haven't seen or experienced it either. I was basing it on a video from another KZreadr, The Yankee Marshall. And it does make sense that the force of the blast would use the point of least resistance, which would be the magazine. Is it a likely occurrence? No. But why risk losing your hand if, in the very unlikely event it did occur, when not using the teacup hold would prevent, or at least minimize injury. His video was about why he considered revolvers superior to semi-automatics. Since revolvers don't store their ammo in the gun's handle, even if something horrendous DID occur, the blast would break out the sides of the cylinder. Again, is it likely to happen? No, of course not. Could it happen? Maybe. But why risk it?

Great video! I would say between the two 1911s in this video, the Springfield is like your name brand Harley Davidson. However, that Tisas Tank Commander with a 4.25" barrel is absolutely a quality made 1911. Hammer forged steel, chrome barrel and smooth trigger that's not too bad at all. I got that same model in both 9mm Luger and .45 acp. They are both excellent. (Springfield cost approximately $700. Tisas Tank Commander $360)

Hey Dan, love the video. Just a few tips for feeding issues: - A quick tap to the bottom of the mag, and a couple of taps in the palm to "seat" the bullets can help align the bullets before popping the mag into the pistol. - Brand new, mag springs can be over tensioned until broken in, and cause the round to press up too hard, causing it to dive prematurely. You can simply use a pencil to push up and down on the springs to break them in or just do what you did, and reduce the bullets by 1 until it chambers and keep using the magazine until it breaks in. - When seating the magazine, you can firmly "smack" the magazine to properly seat it in the gun, instead of pressing it in. - The 1911 platform was originally specced with the 45acp in mind, meaning the OAL (Overall length) is a bit longer, which the metal follower is supposed to account for. Either a new mag, or longer nosed ammo may be required (hollowpoints tend to be a bit shorter OAL than full metal jackets) In any event, I just picked one of these up myself, and your shooting does a damn good job selling it, for sure. Keep up the good reviews, man ^_^

Perhaps, original GI 1911s also were issued with bakelite grips. Excellent safety instruction.

I enjoyed this video very much. Very nicely done. I would recommend, however, when in your firing stance to lean forward a little in order to mitigate the recoil from the gun. While standing vertical as you are here, it is easy for you to be pushed off balance a little from the recoil. By leaning forward just a little, you gain more leverage against the recoil, and thus your body moves less, which enable you to get back on target faster and have more control. Please try it sometime and see if it helps you out. It makes a world of difference for me. I have seen a number of videos of the Tisas A1 US Army guns in the full-sized versions (and I just bought one Friday) and only a few of the Tank Commander sized versions. But I got to thinking and believe a Tank Commander version in 9mm would probably be a really nice gun. That's how I came across your video, and I really enjoyed it.

Never seen a govt. Issue 1911? My colt handed down from my dad has brown plastic grips. Standard issue.

man, you had a time to get that thing running, hopefully mine will be a little smoother out of the box. first video ive seen someone have problems with theirs.

Dirty Dan You are The Man. Very comprehensive effort the Run that Ammo. That gun is too picky to be my first choice in 9mm 1911's.

I used to have a Thompson 1911 but sold I can't remember why but man do I hope run into another Thompson 1911 again soon. So to get back on the 1911 model I bought a Tisas 1911A1 Tanker in 45. It's all black and came with black plastic grips too, gonna replace all of the internals and get a commander hammer and beaver tail grip safety. Everything else is forged. Also going to replace the plastic grips with frag pattern VZ grips. Then it will be my beater gun hahah

I was a tank commander and was issued a colt 1911 A1 in 45 apc with a black leather shoulder holster. Have no idea where the 9mm came from.

Hello Mark, I'm glad to hear you remember the videos posted. I removed them all in an attempt to clear the slate. I would do a new video for the GF00 unfortunately that is a firearm which I didn't keep. I'm always trying to find a way to purchase for a review and sell them; and most of these firearms are ones owned by friends. I have recorded the GF00 into my book for future videos if I have the opportunity again. Or, if all else fails, I can post the original. Thanks for sharing.

I like the plastic grips. Wood is nice, but plastic means that I don't have to worry about messing them up. Plus, they are thinner and give great purchase (grip). Which is why the military went with them. They are very particular, you know?

Plastic grips were on the M1911A1 Issued before,during and after WWII. The grips Tisas has on or sends with some of their models are a copy of the WWII grips. SDS is the import company, Tisas is the manufacturer. Tisas is correctly pronounce Tee-SHa-ss if you don't think so contact them and they will gladly confirm my pronunciation. I'm like you in that I prefer plain 1911's, no ambi or extended this and that.

The firing pin flying out killed my interest. Any chance you or your friend took it apart and didn't put it back together correctly?

Try a ‘metalform’ or an ‘act-mag’ in 38 super for the 9mm 1911. (38 super is a longer case 9mm and doesn’t have the internal back strap running down the back of the inside of the magazine for the additional clearance) Get one with the round top follower, or the act-mag has the polymer follower, not a flat follower like mec-gar mags have. The round top follower doesn’t drupe in the front when you push down on the front load. The whole follower pushes down evenly when you push the front of the follower down. That’ll hold the bullets elevated position when you’re especially chambering hollow points.

Magazine fitment makes a 1911’s functionality work flawlessly, or tolerable or makes it something you wouldn’t bother taking out to practice with. strip down the pistol and strip the slide and take the barrel and lay it in the saddle of the frame, then wrap your index finger through the trigger housing around the barrel, holding it in place. ( you can zip tie it on ) Lock the hammer back and lock the safety on and put a magazine loaded with snap caps in the magwell and lock in place against the extractor behind the barrel. Using a wooden dowel, push a dummy round into the barrel hood and see how it lifts out of the mag into the feed ramp. Run that a couple times. If the bullet smacks the bottom of the barrel hood and loads in the barrel, you can probably use the mag. If you use a mag that lifts the ammo up and straight into the barrel, those are the ones that make a pistol run smooth….. to confirm, load your magazine with spent shell casings and reassemble the pistol and drop the slide on these empty casings, one at a time, to see if they will chamber or stovepipe. If they chamber, you just made a fitted mag for your 1911…….. if I knew how to make a video, I’d make one showing what I described.

I have never seen a 1911 firing pin fall out .not sure anyone has while firing ? Your loads may have hot as hell...

I liked your video.....forcing a mag inside a gun is never a good idea, keeps too much tension on everything....best to leave the slide open insert the mag then close the slide....as for the jams with hollow points i am not surprised one bit.......that happens sometimes with 1911's they were designed for ball ammo and since these are clones of service guns they are finicky with anything but FMJ....i have Sistemas Argentine 1911 in 45 ACP made in 1953 and it hates hollow points.....but loves FMJ what is was designed to shoot....just an observation.....
