Tips to keep your knees healthy | Dr. Monu Singh

Ғылым және технология

Knees are an important structure which needs special care and attention as most of our activities are dependent on this. The knee is a weight-bearing joint due to which it is prone to wearing out.
Dr. Monu Singh, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief of Services for joint replacement, arthroscopy and sports medicine at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram, talks about tips to keep your knees healthy.

1 Don't sit squat 2 Don't use stairs carrying heavy luggage 3 Regular knees exercise 4 Proper hydration 5 Don't stand-up and start walking immediately after sitting squat for long time, firstly move your knees 4 to 5 times to lubricate your cartilage than stand-up 6 Bend knees , straight back and pick things from ground 7 Carry things closer to body instead of holding out 8 Take vitamin c

I don't have time and capacity to make a video But I want to tell all that maintained strong joints needs proper nutrition 1. Eat a big bowl of fresh vegetables during the day, before sunset. 2. Eat a big bowl of fresh seasonal fruits throughout the day. 3. Eat collagen boosting foods or few grams of good collagen supplement. 4. Eat good amount of vitamin C rich foods to keep a strong and healthy body. 5. Exercises to boost healthy knees. 6. Avoid too much alcohol and carbonated drinks are a big no including those packed foods and juices. 7. Do not do stupid exercises in the gym that could put too much pressure on the knees. 8. Stop smoking 9. Stop caffeine it depletes body of minerals. 10. Eat fresh seafood, avoid frozen seafood. 11. Do not overdo cycling, or running or leg exercises. You are a normal person not a sportsperson.

What exactly do you mean by "stupid exercises" and "pressure on the knees". Without weight training, how is one even supposed to strengthen the muscles around the knees?

Dear Doctor, thank you for the great explanation. After listening to it I am left with a concern though: on one hand you explain that poor muscularity around the knee favours cartilage damage but on the other hand you clearly discourage squatting. Therefore, how can one increase muscle mass around the knee then ? This looks like squaring the circle...

I hate to say it but some of this of this is silly. I am a crossfit athlete and it is common knowledge that if you squat, even squatting heavy, with proper form, slowly progression, and no pain, your knees will be super healthy. There are athletes in my gym in their 60s-70s and have some of the healthiest knees. Squatting is okay and encouraged, but in the right way.

So, thank God, and do whatever you want but carefully. In case of knee, first chance is the last chance. After that, crap, and crappy life.
