TIPS to eat KETO at RESTAURANTS with Dr. Eric Westman

Ойын-сауық

The great thing about keto diets is that you can eat anywhere, as long as you keep the carbs low. This means you can eat at any kind of restaurant, from a fast food place to a gourmet restaurant, and still get the great results you want, like losing weight and reversing type 2 diabetes. You can enjoy any kind of cuisine you like - Chinese, Middle Eastern, Italian, Mexican, and more. Check out Dr. Westman’s latest video for his advice on how to make swaps & substitutions so you can stay keto while dining out.

I went to my Chinese restaurant on thanksgiving, and they had a whole smoked turkey, partially sliced, I took a drumstick and a thigh! I was stuffed! There is plenty of food to eat, low carb. Shrimp, chicken, fish, frog legs, beef and broccoli! Last night I had a pound of wague burger for dinner, and half a glass of heavy whipping cream, and half a glass of eggnog! Been on carnivore since August 8, lost 25 lbs, and 6 inches off my waist! I’m 77, and 100 percent disabled, so I spend most of my time home in my chair! No more swollen legs and feet, no more gout attacks! I haven’t gained any weight back, or inches! If I wasn’t fed so much BS from the medical field, I never would have been in the condition I’m in! I was under a doctor’s care, since I retired, but when I got worse, I knew I had to change something, before I loose my toes and feet! My wife thinks I am crazy, but the results, say otherwise! When I see other overweight people, I think there is another person needing proper medical information! Thanks for video, I have plenty of time to watch your videos! My pants are getting bigger, and I’m still ambulatory! Slipped and fell on the ice, yesterday, but still going!

In a Mexican restaurant I order the mixed meat fajitas (shrimp, chicken, steak) which always has lots of veggies. I don't use the tortillas. At the end of the meal I will eat maybe 3 tortilla chips with the salsa. I also dip the meat in the guacamole or salsa. Post meal blood sugar is usually around the 120s.

I am in the fortunate situation of being retired so I don't need to eat at a restaurant. In fact, I haven't eaten out for more than 3 years so I skip the expensive meals with garbage ingredients. I eat at home where I can control what I eat.

Or, you can be the person to eat at home and go to the restaurant to hang out, maybe have some coffee or water and just be social. It's like going to a bar and being the designated driver, you can still be social and hang out but if you are before going, then you really aren't hungry or feel like you're missing out.

Sometimes you should go to family gatherings, for birthdays, and seeing your grandchildren. If you restrict yourself to a 2x2 inch square of cake, and only one, you are not the “wet blanket “ of the get together. Why live long, if you can’t socialize with family! If you’re not drinking alcohol, you should be fine.

I saw a video with a keto crust of 1 pound ground chicken, mozzarella, and Italian seasoning ( I made it with half Italian sausage). Pat it down like a pizza crust on parchment paper and bake. Cool a wee bit and cover with toppings. It’s so good! My family loves it better than most pizzerias and of course, no one wants frozen in our house!

I get Machaca at Mexican restaurants. It's shredded beef, peppers, onions and a bit of scrambled eggs. No beans or rice on the side. I get lettuce, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and quacamole on the side instead. Under 10.00 bucks and It's a huge meal.. It's delicious!

Agree Doc! It’s not hard to maintain a KETO lifestyle once you are immersed into it. I’ve been KETOvore since 2014 with a slight backsliding during Covid when we were locked down and bored. Gained 25lbs but lost it all recently when I got back on track. My go to is steak or other beef products and bacon and eggs. I’m in New Mexico and we do have killer BBQ and Mexican restaurants here. When my wife and I go out for our Friday night date night, I will usually have a steak or grilled fish dish. Always a la cart. She is more flexible than me.

Thank you again, Dr. Westman! We hardly ever eat out these days but when we do here's some things we have: I get the fajitas with the guac salad. I usually get the mix. One of my favorite meals. I find the Asian restaurants are much more challenging so don't go much at all. If we go, it's usually Asian fusion and I usually get sashimi and/or tuna tartar with cucumber slices with seawead salad. We have some fabulous pizza places here that will make a pizza bowl for us which is just toppings in a dish. I've found the sub places charge extra for putting it in a bowl so I just order the sub and eat the middle. I have been making subs at home sometimes with protein sparing sub rolls. Steak house is steak, grilled shrimp, broccoli with the loaded potato toppings on the broccoli. I agree with you about brisket. I LOVE it!

There's the feast & fast method of KETO that I do, basically it's an average amount of carbs over time...zero carbs many days but allowing a feasting day here & there for holidays, vacations, birthday parties & other celebrations. Having smaller portions of carbs on feasting days does help prevent or reduce the negatives when someone is living on the edge very low carb keeps their conditions in remission & overindulgence of carbs makes the symptoms happen again partially or fully.

It is fairly easy to eat out and still keep carbohydrate intake at a minimum but the other ingredient i worry about is the seed/vegetable oils most restaurants use. Vegetable oils are much cheaper and bought in bulk at most restaurants. Maybe only consuming these oils on rare occassions whilst still remaining in ketosis is not too harmful overall but it is still a concern when i eat out none the less. Seed/Vegetable oils definitely give me an inflammatory response. Interested in Dr Erics opinion or anyone else on this subject?

Of course, it didn’t have that awesome sear, but I enjoyed the friends I was with, which was more important. We have to speak up and let them know what our needs are. Every time I ate at a restaurant, I always suffered with stomach issues for at least a day. I truly believe it’s the oil. 😊

A friend of mine was just finishing the eggs, steak and bacon of his first breakfast the other day when his wife's cat brought him a dead mouse - as mice tend to do when they want to "reward" their keepers with a gift. He politely thanked the cat and assured the animal that he was quite full and that she "Clawdia" should go ahead and consume the rodent herself. It got my friend to thinking: If cats have a natural tendency to act as our predators-by-proxy could they be trained to hunt small edible birds on our behalf - quail, grouse, mourning doves, etc.? Then, remembering that Clawdia had recently helped herself to both of his son's goldfish (named "Goldilocks" and "Fins" ) while the family was out at the local butcher, the "idea bulb" got even brighter. Perhaps cats could also be trained to "catch and deliver" on our behalf,s mall mackerel, herring, tlapia, etc.

I usually start by ordering a meat and stress that it’s cooked in butter versus veg oil, and a leafy green salad with no dressing. When all I needed to do during that time was to cut all sugar and carbs from my diet, & the acne improved by 85% within ~21 days. I've learned you CAN eat keto at a restaurant, but most of the time, you can't really ENJOY it. I eat out to get food better than what I get at home, as well as a social event, and so far I haven't found a restaurant that, if I take away all the tasty stuff in order to make it keto, it's just not worth it. I can make much tastier more satisfying, and filling things at home. If I have to eat out I can make it work, but eating out is not an enjoyment on keto unless you find an exceptional restaurant that has a keto menu that's not making you feel like you're sacrificing and paying for more than what you're getting.

Making comments like the ones that you are making to me and others is not helpful and only causes division and stress. It is much better to be gentler and encouraging when commenting in order to help people or to stay silent. For me it's doing the best I can with what I can afford and choosing better options and being able to maintain a low carb lifestyle. Some people are able to or choose not to have desserts, but for me, I would probably end up going off the rails if I didn't have them. For example, in the 18 months that I've been eating low carb there have only been 2 times that I can recall that I have been naughty, once was when my daughter bought me a box of 6 jam tarts. I froze them and ate them over a period of 3 months whereas before low carb I would have eaten all of them in 2 days. Another time I was stressed at work and all I had access to was a nut bar or biscuits. Previously I would not have cared and would have raided the biscuit tin and probably eaten 2 or 3 but I chose the better option. Obviously it would have been better to have had "unprocessed" nuts but they were not available at the time.

You can eat their butter if you want, that way they will think you are really weird, but it's totally keto. You might have to be prepared to be a bit gross sometimes - if you get presented with a plate of sandwiches for a business working lunch, well you are just going to have to accumulate a pile of bread and eat the middles.
