Tips on Traditional Inking for Comics

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I talk about traditional inking for comics using various pens. I am using the Tombow brush pens ( Dual Tip and the Fudenosuke 150 ), 01 and 03 Microns, Strathmore Bristol Board 200 series, and a Uniball White-out pen. I ended up using Pro White and a brush after the video to do small touch ups. I also mention the Presto white out pen which does a much better job for larger coverage areas.
I recently watched a video on ‪@DavidFinchartist‬ channel where he inked over a rough sketch. It inspired me to try that process. It was fun and a much quicker way to produce the artwork.
Let me know what you think and be sure to follow his channel for more great content on creating comic art!
Thank you for watching and for support this channel!

I use a ton of watercolors, so I've gotten to the point where I put in my large black spaces with either india ink and a nice size 8 round, or a Black Prismacolor Marker, I need that waterproof goodness. But I agree, using tools won't change anything if you're not feeling the tool. This was fun to watch, I'm always a fan of your traditional work.

Fantastic! I'm going to ask if you have any practice advice on lighting & shadowing . Also, I'm new to cross hatching. Would you mind sharing the basic "rule of thumb" ? I'll look over your content to see if you've already got something. Sometimes, when you re-explain something, you capture a bit of wisdom that wasn't there before. Anyway, dude, I love your stuff. I'm looking for inspiration and this is inspirational to me.

Wow such incredible work, really inspirational. I am sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but is "traditional inking" the actual name of this solid-black coloring style? I have been trying to learn how to use just black/white, but whenever I do whether its procreate or paper the form/dimensions look misplaced. I have been trying to find tutorials on the web about that specifically without much luck, however, I wasn't sure if there was maybe another name for this style I wasn't familiar with. Again sorry if this comes off ignorant or silly, I'm relatively new.

Hey Rob. I want to ask you about the under drawing here. I have had an issue with pencilling and then inking over it, because when I rub out the pencils the eraser lifts some of the ink off the drawing - a notable amount. Are there any tips or tricks on avoiding that? I am using microns and brush pens, it doesn't happen with sumi ink which is not my preference, and I would prefer to avoid having to use dip pens and brushes, as I struggle to control those tools effectively. Thanks.

I am always curious - how to make these really pale pencil sketches for the inking? Maybe I press on the pencil too much? My sketches are never this pale. Also, when you sketch, you leave grooves on the paper from the pencil. Would it not cause the ink to get into them and spread?
