Great video! looking for exits from your floor not only prepares you for a fire it also gives you routs that criminals may take to and from your room. I keep my essentials in a bag incase I have to exit quickly. Had the fire alarm tripped while I was traveling overseas and grabbed my bag that had my Government Issued computer and documents, passport, government ID, Travel Orders, Local Points of Contact, wallet and cell phone, change of clothes and some toiletries. Part of the rooms were robbed while we were all outside. Also consider what you sleep in and where you keep your shoes. if you have to get out quick you want to be wearing more than your birthday suit.

Hey Patriot, great tips! I would agree with viewer "Doe John" that a flashlight should be added to your nightstand gear. I'm not a fan of weapon mounted lights, for this application, simply because maintenence and/or house keeping folks, occasionally mistake room numbers and enter, what they beleive is an empty room. I don't want to have to point my firearm at them just to make an ID. VERY NOT COOL! Keep up the good work and forget the negative comments about "talking too much". I don't recall their channel?!? Oh yeah, it's because they don't have one! You do and I think you and Mrs. Patriot are awesome. God bless

All good advise, I've been diagnosed with PTSD from a very violent crime years ago that I don't like to think about and I do take sedative medication for it, and I sleep with a 9mm under my pillow every night, I don't even step outside without lethal and less lethal defences, Thank You K.P. This is good advice brother, a lot of people may not think about the placement and orientation of their pistol, but as you said it is really important. I go by that same rule if it’s in a safe, console, glove box, nightstand etc.

The hotels have moved away from tall chairs because of the door lock. A fire marshal thing I suspect. But, I lean the chair against the door, like you, to hear the boom when it hits all legs. My boom box is unholstered also. I also stay on the second floor; harder to break into the window and if need to jump, minimal breakage. Also entrance is from Outside, never a hallway. Thank you. God Bless and stay safe.

Great Video. Thanks for pointing out that time is the most important commodity in an invasion. People also need to remember that hotels sometimes have doors to adjoining rooms and those need to be dealt with as well. I think people should also invest in purpose built door jams or other door denial equipment because a) they are inexpensive b) there are places where you can't bring your firearm c) some older or foreign hotel locks are garbage and d) they are easier than moving furniture (which you might want to use for their intended purpose)

Untucked sheets trick reminds of flipping the zipper/buttons on a MSS military sleeping bag to get out quick. If chairs don't work, remember that dresser will aslo work if done right. Also use a spare towel along floor rolled up. 1 prevents smoke under door in a fire and 2 people can't spy under door on ya and 3 they can't see where in the room you are if ya have to shoot. 4 keep draft out 5 keeps noise down. If you stay a few days and need to quickly move and remove, use safety pins to keep it in roll form. Roll shape also prevents folks from moving it to side so easy. They make a device to disable that hotel latch from being undone. Many govt folks use them that have to travel around (couriers etc). Can do same with strong rubber bands/paracord and those screw in eyelets. They almost don't leave a trace. You can set a beer bottle or tumbler against door just right it will fall too. I set a cold glass of water next to bed. If you can't wake up fast, splash some on face and you will wake up quick. And never take sleeping pills in hotel setting, and never take caffeine so don't get sleep then suddenly crash. If there is a fire, keep jet alert next to bed and chew don't swallow. Should help fast after a few. Basically be alert too. Carry of a small belly/roach knife or baton helps so you don't get dragged in a room and mugged or worse. Of course that assumes you can't carry in a certain state. Also don't be afraid to ask for a different room. If you have creds they will always comply. If you don't find a good excuse. Noise or odor or light to bright etc. Stayed at so many hotel/motels across world I have a list a mile long. I literally could go all day on tips. One other thing is carry binos. Make note of any cars you see with folks hanging out in the keeping tabs on guests or vans with folks in them. And never leave food unattended inside the room (or meds or gear) or at breakfast say if you have to use the loo/restroom. Do your meals in your own room and avoid people. Be unsocial! It's okay! Try to get a map of hotel layout each floor from fire maps and snap photos on phone. Learn where service access is, and if you are smart and resourceful you can easily obtain the blueprint online. Not gonna share how but it can be done in most locales/places. Key is to know where stuff is, where to avoid traps and pinch points, alt exits, and also nearby places open 24/7 you can run to if in trouble. Have several fall back spots. And lastly, never trust hotel safes. Ever.... ever ever.

In addition to long screws in the door frame and lock plate at home, I put one of the alarm wedges against the door at night which grips the floor decently, but I also place my work boots against the back of the wedge to make sure there is enough resistance to the wedge so that the alarm will sound. Funny story, of course the first night I put it in place about 4 AM the next morning the alarm went off - I responded to the alarm but was skeptical there was actually someone trying to get in the very first time I used it, and sure enough, the cat had set it off being curious. She's never done that again as the loud siren effect used up at least two of her nine lives!!

Nice video. It came out during some externally supplied chaos in my life so I'm behind on watching. I use one of the wedge alarms that you mentioned and keep a bright flash light next to the bed (in addition to the handgun). There is also a Cold Steel Tanto there. OK, the tanto might be redundant with the handgun, but a little extra is better than not enough.

Good advice about positioning something near the door that makes noise. I have gotten some calls at odd times on the room phone, so I'd probably position the phone further away from the gun, perhaps on one of those other little stands so answering the phone doesn't put my hand near the muzzle. Although to be honest I've never spilled my nightstand water bottle, so could be fine. Also, while there is one fewer exit I like higher floors because nobody can come in the window and I don't have to listen to street noise. In one apartment I lived in I put a Star Wars toy with a motion detector at the balcony sliding door and it went off twice. Both times the noise alerted me and the flashing lights made the intruder jump off the balcony.

Talk too much? Nope. You're right, how else would you convey your message? My only criticism is that you feel apologetic for emphasizing what may well not be obvious to some people. I guess maybe others have done a motel room security video. But this is the first one I've ever seen. Thank you for thinking and sharing common sense measures and insights. I consider myself typically vigilant and 'paranoid' about hotel/motel stays. However, you made me quite aware of short falls in my thinking and safety measures. So, I'm certain you've enlightened others as well. Duh! My door key might well have been duplicated. The desk clerks in most motels don't make much more than minimum wage, have minimum training, and perhaps even less conscientiousness. They could even be corrupt and use their access for evil purposes. I know that's a really negative view of people in general and uncharitable. But I'm not accusing, just considering the world we live in. This video confirms that reality. You are absolutely right about setting up something that will cause you to wake up...a wrong sound. Two or three seconds can definitely make the difference to enable you to present a defense and hopefully offense. Your emphasis on placing your firearm so that you have a natural 'grab' is right on. You could easily lose every second gained from your alert measures, by fumbling...and maybe dropping, your firearm if you laid it in the wrong attitude to your reach. Everything you shared here is excellent information. Thank you.

You should have went out and opened the door with that chair in place, you had a camera girl, then we could have heard and seen it. Just a after thought. I always carry 2 wooden door stobs and wedge them under the door before going to sleep. I’ve tried to get into the door with no success. I’m sure if you kicked on it and slammed into it enough you might could get in there. I didn’t want to damage my hotel door to find out how much force it would actually take to break them or break the door off the hinges but like you said it will give that extra time you need wake up a bit. I didn’t see your gun close enough to see if you had a gun light or not but that’s something I have. I bring my carry gun. And then a full size gun with a light to lay on the table beside me. Good presentation I enjoyed it. Just thought I would throw a few ideas out there.
