Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

John from 'TTG' and Damian from 'O&D R Jaguar XK8' do a two question challenge. We agreed to come up independently with three answers each to two questions.
1 What are our top three tips for first time buyers of Jaguar X100's?
2 What 3 things will be different on our next XK8's?
In this video we meet to share and compare our answers.

    I follow both of you guys and spent four years looking for a Jaguar Convertible... and a year and a half ago in 2019 found one that fit all that I was looking for. It's 2007 XK Convertible, 1 of 97, Winter Gold, had 44000 miles on it than, now 48743 as of today. Two new rear tires last summer and one left rear brake light, an oil change, and all filters, 3. An absolute joy to drive, rock-solid, a smile from ear to ear. This is a keeper. Have done about a dozen car shows with it, get a lot of looks from top to bottom with comments of "love it"," I want one", how cool... I've done a total detail on it, in and out with Clay Bar and four Ceramic Coatings over the last year. Painted calipers, Burnt Copper to offset the car's paint. What can I say ...I just enjoy this car. Learned a lot from both of you guys, Thank You, Driving the dream.

    Great video guys, my 2 favorite XK8 KZread gods . Only one complaint, it wasn't long enough :-) I'm with you lads, the later cars are tempting because of rust issues and engine update. But I prefer the shape (In particular the recessed fogs) of the earlier cars and more basic electric's. Less bells and whistles to go wrong. I could be bias, my 99 XKR has no brembo's, but stops well enough for me and no electric head rests or electric steering column adjustment to go wrong. At least that's two things off my potentially long, to do list :-) Keep up the good work guy's.

    great video, been following you both for a while as I am intending to buy a convertible once allowed to actually have a look at cars in person. Reinforced info I had picked up from both of your channels and a few books. Always liked the car and decided to buy myself one as a retirement present couple of years ago but due to circumstance's only just getting to it(lucky to be able to retire at 60 coupe of years ago) I spent a lot of time at Jaguar from the early 80s to 2000s Visiting both Browns lane factory or Witney R&D about once a fortnight, whilst working for the company that supplied most of Jaguars cooling (Now Part of Denso who supplied a lot of parts to Jag from various plants).At the time of the development and manufacture of the X100 and X300 I was working as a Denso Quality Engineer responsible for looking after any Jaguar concerns with our products and new product introduction. Remember at that time there was lots of political arguments and decision's made following Ford takeover and wanting to use their own parts / suppliers whilst Jag designers wanted to keep their own so there were good and bad decision's made. Looking forward to my X100 ownership, following a multitude of previous sports car toys from Lotus to Porsche, Mercedes, Bmw etc.

    Fantastic to have you as part of our gang Stuart Like myself I guess you are one of those who will derive pleasure and interest from just lifting the bonnet or looking under the dashboard and admiring/criticising or just pondering the component design and choices. And the x100's ford/jag parts choices are part of what makes that so interesting. And when you get to compare notes with a DB7 owner, its like all my christmases have come😁 PS controversially I think:- -Jag v Aston Jag better built and interior layout and ergo far superior. -Ford MoCo Switch gear and electronics were a step up because they just work.👍 -For most other items I vote for Jags band of usual suppliers as material choices are far better

    @@ToTheGarage hi John yes agree jag better than Aston, had a minor involvement with the DB7 at prototype stage due to the link with the Jag, At the time Jag were just starting to benefit from the Ford production techniques and Fords Mazda controlling share ownership giving them access to Japanese methods as well , (mazda bought back Ford share 2015 ish). But there were still enough original Jag people on the design teams for x100 & x300 to stand up to Ford and fight when they thought they had the better parts or ideas. As you say Ford stuff just works they are not one of the biggest car manufacturer's by accident my daily driver is a Ford Kuga until I can afford A Jag 4WD SUV to tow the caravan.

    Everyone thinks I paid too much, but it had 45000 miles and on a lift it looks brand new underneath. Not even a hint of rust anywhere on the car. It had been kept in a garage in the south its entire life. Worth every penny to me. I intend to drive it till the wheels fall off.

  • @ToTheGarage

    A car is worth exactly what the buyer is willing to pay. Unless you buy to resell at a profit then you cant have paid too much👍. Purdey cost me more than an average xk8 even when you consider her condition, but I was prepared to pay about £3000 more for a car without high level brake lights (first 2000 or so off the line). To others the age and the very early production number would have counted against her.

    I'm sorry I missed the Jag dialog's answer to the Vag monologues. Here in CA we have zero rust on our cars except for those kept within a mile or two of the beach. The previous owner of my car kept in in her garage in Monterey and only used it on Sundays to go golfing at Pebble Beach. Get a transmission shop that specializes in ZF to scan the clutch pressure adaptions on any target XK8 before buying. Great video guys. Thank you and thanks for the others you’ve posted. I’m very close to buying an XKR. It will be a 2002+ car to benefit from the many improvements but still retain the original look. I actually like the flush fog lights of the slightly later car too. My dilemma at the moment is around rust. I am a massive pedant for perfect bodywork and couldn’t live with even small bubbles around the arches etc. I can see near perfect looking cars for £30k but there’s no guarantee that there won’t be hidden rust in the usual spots. Is it better to pick up one of the £15k cars (still with FSH) and have a full respray where any rust can be thoroughly and properly treated? Even if that costs £3-4K, is that a better route to go down? Thanks. Alan

  • @ToTheGarage

    @ToTheGarage

    I agree that its difficult to achieve a cosmetically rust-free XK8. I think that structurally the majority are very strong and all the rust areas are well known, but With any 20 - 25-year-old cars it is very difficult to get perfect. I think one of the issues with the XK8 is that its looks have aged so well, that we fail to instinctively recognise it as a pretty old car and a contemporary of the Austin metro!. I would find a nice car with a believable history indicating it has not been previously cut filled welded and re painted (beyond a nose cone respray as that is practically a given. And put some money aside for a decent body guy to correct it to the standard you want.

    The Final edition holds quite a draw for me too Rich. The run out model had every toy and of course its a limited edition and the youngest car. But more toys = more opportunities for problems. The earlier cars are the prettiest in my eyes, but then the box sills and bigger bumpers give it a more aggressive look🤯 I need one of each model year in an array of colours. Including a U.S imported Victory edition convertible in White (almost impossible to buy a white X100 in the UK) and a fully loaded Arden Coupe. Its a good job I don't have a lot of spare money, because I would spend the lot🤣 The reality is that I would, and could, buy any model and year if the spec and condition was right.

    Hello John, im a big fan of your TTG videos. its maybe not the right place to ask questions, but didnt find other possibilities. I have a question. I would love to buy an XK8 or XK8R, but looking for the best deal on my pocket possibilities. Here in France the prices are much higher than in the UK, so have to deal with it ! And the insurance prices for the "R' are ridiculus, so thinking of staying with the "8", and have been looking for a 4.2, but whats your thought about it ? Or the 4.0 is as good ? When you want to buy, after checking your list of things to check first, i found one 2001 with 88K Km, and another one 2005 with 165K Km. both are very interesting. From what i deducted is that the milage comes first and the year after. The 2001 is 3 K Euros more expensive, but i think i need to negociate . ;) What would you suggest ?

  • @ToTheGarage

    @ToTheGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Thierry. I would be more swayed by a low mileage than a younger age, but mostly by body condition and any indicators that one of then has been better cared for. The 4.0 litre is not quite as economical or powerful as the 4.2 but for me there is not enough difference to make it a decision maker. the 4.2 will have a few better designed parts such as an all metal water pump, and fully variable cam timing rather than the 2 stage timing on the 4.0 I have to say the 4.2 is seen as the more reliable but again in truth its pretty marginal. If condition is similar and the colours, wheels and trim levels appeal equally to you then my preference would be the earlier lower mileage car, but it really is down to which stirs your soul most at the end of the day. Good luck my friend

Find a few ones but not perfect, some imports from the states with no history, one "R 100" but in canada, so with transportation and all the french laws, it will end up being over budget for me. I'm much more looking like the french says "un coup de coeur" thats what alow you to go a bit further from what you expected . So still looking, in england there is a lot to offer, but wrong side !!! any way ill stay in touch. PS im very sad as i didnt say anything about Gary who was on the show with you !!! he seems to be a nice guy as well, and because of him i baught the book on the XK that he was telling in the video, and red strait all through that same nighht ;) ;) Thank you again

    Not sure I'd fancy a rust bucket as described. I believe Jaguar built the XK with an aluminium monocoque from 2007?

    Yes all Alloy from 2007 onward. Lighter, newer, quicker, Hatch back on the Coupe and automatic tone cover on the convertible. Great cars. Not quite as pretty in my eyes though.. Wouldn't stop me buying one (as well as keeping my X100)

    Hi John, another great video, thanks, Thought you may have touched on the CPU and throttle body. As you may know Grandad has a 1996 XK8, and we have not been able to sort it, being in Spain and only having 9,oo Km´s on the clock, rust and suspension not a issue, But can´t find anyone to sort out this problem.

    John/Damian: Watch for "Stumble Speak" . If you watch Prince Charles, it takes him FOREVER to get going: what with stumbles and stops, stumbles and starts. Damian is a little the same way. If you are making a recording for the public. Have a script and work through it directly. Stumbles, starts and stops are really annoying to North Americans...We don't talk like this.... This is a presentation and not two blokes in a pub, 5-6 pints down the road...Too much time wif me brover if you get my drift....

    I think if you have nothing nice to say perhaps say nothing at all? These guys were having a chat about their XK8's - it wasn't a scripted "show" like Oprah or some other crap you Americans perhaps expect! I hate people tearing genuine videos to pieces nitpicking! How dare you accuse Damian of having a speech impediment!!! I think you're bloody rude - and this is New Zealand speak mate!

    Richard. In the politest possible way, wind it in a bit mate. You can take as many pops at me, my pronunciation, style, content and opinions as you like. (and often do) But now and again it bleeds over to others. And thats not OK. This is a hobby not a profession. I think of everybody who contributes to , comments on and takes time to watch the channel as my friend. Speech over. No offence intended by me. How you take it is up to you. John
