Jaguar XK8 - 10 facts about chains, tensioners and guides AJ-V8 timing EP0A / XKR (X100)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Episode 0A Want to know about secondary tensioners and more, then this video will help. Here is ten important facts I learnt changing the cam chains, tensioners and guides on my 1996 Jaguar XK8 AJ26 NA engine. The video tries to answer the common questions people ask about early plastic secondary tensioners, how to check them, tools for changing them, typical kits and also includes some advice I've learnt from others and by changing them myself. This especially relevant up to and including early MY2002 cars.

Hi Damian, I wanted to share my experience, hoping it will help your viewers and XK8 owners. I own a 2001 XK8, and have heard on several forums and XK8 owners clubs, that early engines produced after August 13, 2001 may still have plastic chain tensioners. Well, last week I decided to open my valve cover and I discovered, with great happiness, that mine are metal. My engine has the number 010821, so it was produced just a week after the update. Thank you for your videos, greetings from Italy. Giuseppe

I forgot to mention that the previous owner, who owned the car for about 15 years, never bothered to check, so obviously, but also according to my mechanic opinion , the chain tensioners are genuine Jaguar parts.

Giuseppe, thank you very much for the information. This is extremely interesting. We couldn't find where the original date originally came from. We have been trying to verify the '13th August 2001' date with any official Jaguar documentation. However, we have been unsuccessful other than confirming its somewhere around that date based on engine and model year changes. A bit of a guess? Therefore, for you to confirm that engines slightly before that date already had upgraded tensions verifies the date is only an estimate and not the exact date. Much appreciate this information and contribution, regards Damian

This is an absolutely AWESOME video! Wish I had had it available before I did my tensioners 10 years ago. I had heard about the problem, and noticed rattling while driving. I knew instantly what was happening, and drove the car home very gently, fortunately with no failure. I got the latest tensioners and new chains, and did the water pump, thermostat, etc. When I took the tensioners off, they were in the beginning stages of failure, with cracks, but no missing pieces. So I didn't have to open the lower sump. Anyway, that's taken care of on my car now, but now I have transmission and drive mode problems and it's stuck in limp-home mode. I took the ABS box, opened it up, and took into where I work (Which has an aircraft avionics shop with REALLY sharp guys) and they quickly found and fixed a bunch of bad solder connections. That's where I stopped, and now I need to get back on the car and bring it back to life again. Thanks again for this video!

The more I learn about all the fun, travel and adventure people have had with various different chain-driven camgears, the more I realise that actually timing belts are not an inherently awful idea. At least they are a damn sight easier and cheaper to change on a reasonable interval (60k) and you get all the reassurance of a brand new water pump at the same time, plus you can do your valve clearances.

My tips concerning the tools shown: The screws coming with the Crankshaft Pulley Removal Tool (it´s always the same made in China, even if the boxing may have a different color) are too long and will penetrate into the engine front cover if no washers are used. The two bridges of the Timing Kit are useless if the primary chains come off first and the cam sprockets can no longer be counterholded by the crankshaft. To lock the camshafts against the high torque required for unscrewing these sprockets, you need brides with 3 (instead of 2) holes similar to the OE ones that can be screwed to the middle of the cylinder heads.

@@ODRModurol well, I was a mechanic for over twenty years. I have dealt with this problem on Porsche 944’s, lots of them, 928’s, Audis, Jaguar xk’s, I’ve owned over 12 of those. I’ve never seen a belt or chain break, bend valves and take out a piston or cause catastrophic engine damage. I am well versed in removing heads and bent valves, and guides, grinding the seats and laping the new valves in and putting it back together. Are you dead sure that this engine is any different? The valves are soft. They don’t take our pistons, not that I’ve ever seen. I’m wondering where you heard this and if it’s really true. Do you know this from experience? I’m going to approach this like any other car with a broken belt or chain, it’s not a big deal, I hope. As always, nice job Damian. I can't believe for the life of me whatever Jaguar was thinking in making such critical parts out of plastic in the first place! Did they save $2 per engine in manufacture costs? I have a Kawasaki motorcycle (ZX-11) that uses a ratchet type tensioner tensioned by a stout spring. As it wears over time eventually the tensioner clicks to the next tooth thereby locking the adjustment so that it can never loosen. Don't understand why Jag never did anything that simple and bullet proof. You also mention that "rattle on startup". I actually get that a few times a year on my '04 4.2! I've never sweated it much because it's so rare and I have total confidence that I have the newest tensioners in it by virtue of the model year. I can only presume that sometimes a tensioner sometimes decides to bleed down since the previous shutdown.

Some of the other videos and forums say the third generation tensioners were not used until the 4.2 came out in 2003, but I believe you are saying the third generation were used as of 8/13/2001, correct? Of course my engine was built in 10/10/2001 so I have a vested interest. If you could, please let me know your thoughts on this topic. Thanks.

James, the you are correct in your thinking. The intermediate ‘spring’ tensioner came was fitted to engines after 12th October 1998. The third generation was fitted to engines from 13th August 2001. Whilst its correct all 4.2 litre engine have them the 4.2 litres cars started to be built later from June 2002. Hope that clarifies the subject regards Damian

I have an 2003 s type r. I put 235 k miles on it and it was due to be freshened up. I removed the engine and trans had both rebuilt . I'm at the timing part now and need guidance . I followed the shop manual ( mine is not vvt timing ). I locke the cams and the crank. I used the special tool to tighten the bolts and take slack off chain. My issue ? When I remove the tools and spin the motor I reinstalled the cam rails and the crank tool is a bit off . This is second time I did the procedure and not understanding what if anything I'm doing wrong . Any advice ?? I've never timed this motor before so I don't know if the crank being off a smidge is normal ?

  • @ODRModurol

    @ODRModurol

    4 ай бұрын

Mike, this might be the action of the valve springs moving the cam & timing slightly. It’s normal of one of the cams to be smidge off due to this. When you release the cam locks you might find the valve springs move one of the cams (think it’s the inlet cam on the RHS bank from memory). Make sure you lock the crank first and then should be able to relock the cams despite the slight movement, if the timing is correct, as it will recompress the valve springs . Hope that helps, please let us know how you get on, regards Damian

Fine sir, I have a question. After installing the “metal” tensioners, I have slack in the chain on the non-tension side of the tensioner assembly. I am afraid to reassemble the rest of this job until I figure it out. I assume as you say at minute 7, once I crank the engine, oil pressure will keep tension on the fixed side of the tensioner? Or am I mistaken and have something else out of time??

Liver Ticked Outfitters, what year / engine? If in doubt, I would double check the setting up of the VVT units (fully retarded) and the socket positions reference the Jaguar setting procedure. Plus could remove the locks turn the engine over manually using the crank ( put the bolt back in with a spacer). This should pump the oil enough to move tensioners into position. Once the engine turned over a couple of time, can then put the locks back in place to double check the timing is correct. Hope that helps regards Damian

@@ODRModurol thank you for the help! 2000 Lincoln LS actually, 3.9L engine. I believe I have solved my issue. If there is no Key in the camshaft gear\sprocket, I would guess it has spun on the shaft just a bit. I have everything perfectly aligned, so I am assuming I will have to remove the gear bolt and retorque down, while pulling slack from the top of the chain. Any other thoughts or confirmations are appreciated

Think you’ve got although I have no idea on the Lincoln LS engine. Assuming it’s the same would need to tension the chains whilst torquing down the sprocket bolts, regards Damian

@@ODRModurol it is a non-VVT 3.9L displacement in the 4.0 Block. It is running tonight all thanks to your wonderful videos! I did discover it was not the cam sprockets out of alignment, it was simply slack in the chain because of no oil pressure yet. Pulled fuel pump relay and cranked, and Eureka! Runs nice and smooth!

Those of us with the 4.2L engine don't have any of these concerns in the short term, but has anyone had to do a chain and tensioner replacement on this engine yet and were there any significant issues?

Eric, easiest is to find the ownership/registration documents or equivalent (V5C in the UK). On the actual engine If you can’t see from the top it’s on a cast rib underneath on the LHS. Might be able to get a photo of it with phone camera. Hope that helps, regards Damian

Jag shouldve and couldve sorted any engine and transmission well and made the engine every bit as good as mercedes look r BMW or even toyotas best. That way their reputation would have been tip top. Theyre not bad and often are more reliable than many audi, merc, BMW or even Toyota and are cheaper motors than many and often get unfair criticism in some cases. There are some capacity engines and years that are really good but due to bad QC in the past and reliavbility and design gremlins, theyve now got a bad reputation. The truth is some mercs, audi BMW and some toyotas were BBV ad especially electrics on bmw and mercs and even bmw from 200p0 to 2008. Often they would last until the 3 or 4 year guarantee from new was finished then youd better have very deep pockets. Not what you expect on a £80000 + car. Disgusting.
