My daughter told me about the tiny homes two years ago, she has been looking for property where she can build a steal house for her business and then build two tiny homes behind for me and my other daughter but she kept getting blocked by racist home owners association and zoning issues. Atlanta is very racist so it’s difficult for her but she’s not allowing them to stop what she wants to do. It’s nice to know that blk ppl are doing it as well bcaz when I viewed the homes it was mostly whyte ppl. My (grand-)daddy built a tiny house over 50 years before I found out about them about nine years ago. My aunt lived in it for a while with kids as did I. We later called it the “little house.” Now my dream is to own my own tiny house. It is great to see other Black women loving them as I do. I owned a new starter home in western NC for several years and did not like all the responsibilities that went with owning a standard sized home.

About a month ago I was on the phone with our city planning department. I was told the tiny home movement is strong here because so many homes have been destroyed by fires. California has a housing shortage. But there is a minimum square footage for the primary residence in this city. I don't know why. An absolutely beautiful tiny house in a mobile home park: I can see the neighbors getting jealous. I dream about driving a tiny car so that it can be solar-powered. It just frightens me as "jealous neighbors" look at it as I pull into Safeway. So I drive something that doesn't draw attention to me like everyone else. Awesome talk again Stephanie!

Although I've worked very hard to attain the things that I have, I realize how much "stuff" that I've accumulated for years, but never much really utilize. My desire is to sell my home and go smaller. But in my living region, developers are flipping small houses and selling them for ridiculously high prices--yet the smaller houses are selling within days of being on the market--at even higher than asking prices!

I am in the processing of getting rid of all of the "Stuff" Like you worked hard to attain it... and I have high-end upscale taste. It has been liberating to let it all go. Some charity, some consignment shops are helping me.... no regrets letting it go.. just regrets that I did not save all of that money.... I have learned that less is more, spiritually! It is some type of bondade to have to be concerned about Stuff and where to keep it. The tiny house thing makes so much sense.

I am in the same process. One day I was standing in my apartment and I was disgusted with all the "stuff" I had. So I've started getting rid of stuff. I've started implementing the one in one out rule. If I haven't touched in 1 - 1.5 yrs... it's out. My grandparents lived in a tiny house and I LOVED it. It was destroyed in a hurricane so I am looking into rebuilding.

I appreciate your openness. I love taking a peek at different choices people make and I want to hear about it from different perspectives. I hope that I can be wiser in my conversations with others (regardless of color) now that I am more educated in the challenges faced by people of color in the tiny house movement. I have a friend who I can speak more openly with. I hope that you can appreciate that I want to understand even as I am likely an odd person at best. Speaking only for myself, I was aware that I rarely saw a person of color in the tiny house movement but I was totally ignorant as to why that might be. I wanted to begin to correct that and I believe this video was an excellent intro to a greater awareness and understanding of the situation.
