He might just have a more director reliant acting style. There are actors who can seemingly follow instructions to the individual fibers of their facial muscles, they are brilliant. But they need a director who is motivated and skilled enough or they'll be the ones mocked. Johnny's style of inventing his characters on his own is extremely stable and especially stands out in a cookie cutter director film like the POTC. But his weakness is that he needs to be motivated enough or the characters start becoming too similar. The most robust performer has a balance of both qualities, but it's extremely rare for it to be balanced the right way for actual success, navigating through the maze of when to follow the director and where to stand your ground is such a fine art.

Chalamet’s voice to me seems like a first grade teacher reading a story to their students which is totally wrong imo. Gene’s Wonka would say some of the silliest and most outlandish things but he said them with absolute sincerity. To him creating a “world of pure imagination” wasn’t simply a game to entertain children, it was his life’s work and he took it absolutely seriously. In other words Chalamet seems like an adult talking down to children but Gene was truly one of them at heart.

There is a huge time difference between chalamets character and Wilders/Depps years what could have changed Wonka personality, how he talks, how he interacts.

Wilder always looked like he knew something you didn't, and in fact that he perhaps knew everything. He was smooth and gentlemanly, and so it caught you off guard when he'd do or let something WONKY happen. Depp fully encapsulated childishness and insanity, wrapped up in a competitive and intelligent being. Toddler with a ray gun energy. The movie had issues, but his vibe was on point Chalmette...I swear I've never seen even one if his half assed expressions reach his eyes. His twitchy body language is a poor imitation of both predecessors, nothing compelling or unfamiliar to watch as he moves and speaks.its more like watching a stage play, where you have to recognize body language from afar, than enjoying a close up movie character. For being Wonka, he does not feel spontaneous or full of wonder, just script lines
