Timing in Boxing | Being Smooth in Boxing

Спорт

Timing in boxing and being smooth in boxing are two factors that differentiate pro boxers from the novices. Learning how to parry and block shots isn't just about using your hands, but rather synchronizing your whole body with that block. Tom will explain the importance of positioning and why positioning is more important than hand speed. Being smooth in boxing automatically increases your speed by allowing you to save time from changing positions and throw punches. The key is to being relaxed. When you are relaxed you are able to roll with punches and come back with a counter punch more quickly. Bottom line is you are able to transition yourself to and from offense to defense quickly.

    You have got some of the real, old school knowledge, thanks for sharing! I once worked with George Benton a while, he used to always say to make yourself small and keep everything tight. A lot like what you are teaching here with catching and parrying punches. Most guys are huge targets when they block or catch punches and have poor balance, they leave a lot of openings and have to take a lot of clean shots! Great Stuff Here!

    Nice instruction about synchronizing the body. Nice instruction about synchronizing the body. Also, look how that kid's hook enters with much power 2:49, because is body placement and mass is all behind it.

    The Boxing Banker Calvin Brock! Fighting out of Charlotte, NC. I haven't heard his name in years. I watched him a few times before the Klitschko fight. I watched that live on tv too. I was living in Charlotte at the time and remember when he was getting famous. I think he worked for Bank of America and their corporate headquarters was in Charlotte.

    i used to train around calvin when i was a teen at johnston mills projects in charlotte,nc where they taught me how to walk the line and throw my jab , ive won many fights using the skills they taught me, him and his father are great guys! There was an older gentleman who ran the gym he was a great man and a legendary boxing trainer, wish i could have continued my training but they closed down the projects and turned them into condos, anyhow its awesome to see calvin on one of your vids wow this brings back memories im glad to see hes still alive and well. ive watched all of your videos i love the pad work drills keep up the great work guys!

    "Smooth is fast" agree 100%. It's crazy how as a sport, boxing and racing/motorsport are so similar... Both are a limited form of sport to the outsider, however, that's far from the truth as both the boxer and race driver must find little techniques to outdo each other at the ring or race track. Both also encourage the "smooth is fast" principle. In boxing smooth is fast allows you to save energy and transition well from one state to another fast and finding your rhythm, in racing it's the same principle, being able to apply the gas, shift gears, turn the steering wheel, utilise the brakes in a smooth but relaxed manner allows you to find your rhythm and makes you a faster driver. I know its weird comparing motorsport to boxing but in some way, it's crazy how the general approach to both sports are so similar.... As always excellent video Tom!!

    How does position beat speed? Wouldn’t it be timing, you would need to time the punch in order to not get hit, per say someone hops in with a jab you might got a good position but your timing actually makes it useful

  • @WorldClassBoxingChannel

    @WorldClassBoxingChannel

    Being technically better is being in better positions to hit and not get hit. If someone is wild and sloppy offensively and defensively even if they are physically faster than their opponent if the opponent is in better position and throws shorter tighter punches and has tighter defense they can make up for speed deficit.

  • @WorldClassBoxingChannel

    @WorldClassBoxingChannel

    Timing of course is important as well. That is cerebral speed which also can beat physical speed. The ability to anticipate is huge!

  • @bodman951

    @bodman951

    @@WorldClassBoxingChannel when you mean position do you mean different angles, like when you step off to the side? Cause then it would more be timing, since you need to time the shot and slip off to the side or backwards to get in a more dominant position, to me it sounds like timing sets up the position in order for it to be effective

    There are so many examples of positioning beating speed here is one on hand position. Listen to Emanual Steward talk about the difference maker the position of where you store your right hand. 👇🏼
